Sept 19,198 to Sept 23,1918
Alright, let’s see where were we…
Ah yes, the conquest of Britain.
German forces having just completed the conquest of Oxford have now completely encircled London. Unfortunately most of the Allied forces had left London in an attempt to recapture the undefended North Sea coastal provinces. The primary force of 11 American and British units were focused on Ipswich, while another 2 divisions were further south in Canterbury.
Germany had 10 armies of roughly 9 divisions each operating in Southern Britain, as well as a cavalry force of 5 divisions. The German forces were arrayed as follows:
2 Armies and the Cavalry force were responsible for Southampton
1 Army was to go for Canterbury, before heading north
2 Armies were to attack Ipswich, with the army at Canterbury to provide reinforcements
1 Army was to attack London
This left 4 additional armies (opposed by 1 Allied division) to conquer the rest of England and Wales.
The first battle we will look at is in Southampton:
The German cavalry force originally defended the city (taking heavy casualties as you might expect) until an additional army arrived. The Germans enjoy numerical superiority here, but the Imperial staff still ordered an additional army to reinforce the city.
Allied losses are now at roughly 6000 a day compared to around 700 Germans. Those are statistics, the Imperial staff can live with. For now the goal is to eliminate the Allied divisions completely, as it is assumed the Allies lack the resources necessary to build any additional divisions.
After 3 more days of fighting, and the battle is just about over…
In 6 days, the Allies lost 40550 men compared to 4430 German troops.
Elsewhere, the battle for London began on September 21st.
Again German numerical superiority would seem to make this battle a foregone conclusion. The only battle that has any hope for the Allies is at Ipswich where the Allies have 11 full strength dug in divisions, but even there the battle quickly turns in the German’s favor.
With the arrival of the second army, German forces are now inflicting 3 times the casualties. The war is not over yet, but clearly the Allies have no hope…
The up to date ledger in losses looks like this:
So here’s where we stand:
The battle of Southampton probably only has about 2 or 3 days left until the entire Allied force is eliminated. London will fall shortly, and the main Allied force at Ipswich is unable to stand, and will be slowly ground to nothing. Meanwhile, there is only 1 division left to oppose Germany in northern England and Wales.
