Battle of Kattegat

This is going to be the first in a series of short updates…

germannavyww1atkielfu1.png

Following a British landing at Kiel, the German High Seas Fleet was sent out to find the navy responsible.

What they found was an American force operating under the British flag. With almost even odds, the Germans engaged the enemy fleet.

march171918kattegatmk4.png

The battle was relatively short, with both sides losing a capital ship. For the Germans it was the battleship Pommern. More importantly however was the sever damage suffered by the dreadnaught, Bayern.

may201918endofbattlexq3.png

Rather than loosing the Bayern, the Germans withdraw from the battle to regroup.

In other news, the spam continues…

Actually, I don't know...

Unfortunately that information was lost during the numerous reloads that were taking place at the time. (See earlier post). It was frustrating becasue I was constantly reloading, and trying to put these updates together, I am trying to figure out which pics go with which reload.

Through it all, I think I've gotten things mostly correct, although I can't guarantee it. The next update, I had better notes for though, so I can give you more information.

I have to say I did a couple of double-takes when I saw that "defeat" sign in your last screenshot! They're pretty common in my games, but I don't recall ever having seen one in your AARs! Hope you've got something available to chuck the Brits out of Kiel asap- wouldn't like the idea of them gaining a foothold while you're busy dealing with Austria or Africa...

The High Seas Fleet had withdrawn from the battle of Kattegat to protect the dreadnaught Bayern. Unfortunately, the Allied fleet was not very cooperative in the effort, and followed the German fleet. The German’s were once again engaged with the American fleet this time at Storebælt. This time there would be no escape for the Bayern.

march211918storebaeltmarn2.png

With the loss of the Bayern a forgone conclusion, Gedicke made the controversial decision to go head to head with the American fleet in the hopes of scoring a major victory, or at the very least crippling the American navy to a point that they couldn’t participate in the upcoming invasion of Britain.

march211918storebaeltbt8.png

The Germans had sunk several American cruisers, but had failed to score any hits on the American dreadnaughts. The Americans however had focused all their efforts on the irreplaceable German dreadnaughts. The Bayern was lost at the beginning of the battle, but as things progressed, the Baden was not far behind. Still Gedicke insisted the day would belong to the Germans, and pressed the attack.

march241918navalbattleqd7.png

Gedicke lost the cruiser Danzig, while sinking another two American ships. The more conservative admirals Röhrl and von Spee urged Gedicke to withdraw before loosing any more ships, but Gedicke knew he was superior to the American admiral, and continued to press the attack.

march271918admiralscs1.png

In time, Gedicke would prove correct as he finally began to see damage on the bigger American ships. First to go down were battleships Alabama and Oregon, along with several cruisers, while the Germans only lost one modern cruiser.

march271918battleqn9.png

In the final stages of the battle, Gedicke earned yet another medal for himself. He lost the dreadnaught Sachsen, but countered by sinking the American dreadnaughts North Dakota, Texas and Pennsylvania. He also sank several other battleships and cruiser. In the end only the American dreadnaughts Delaware and Arkansas survived the battle, and both of those were severely damaged.

march30battelyj7.png

Gedicke ordered his damaged ships back to port, and sent the rest of the German fleet out to find those last two American dreadnaughts.

Oh yea, and as always more spam…

Defeat is a relative term in Vicky...
I chose to withdraw from the battle so technically it was a defeat although I prefer to call it a strategic withdrawal :D

No, no medal for Röhrl. Sorry, we can't go easy on this and hand out medals to just anybody. Did somebody see him sink a transport, preferrably sailing under German colours? See?

AND: A deep bow to you that you continue the AAR in face of the nigh insurmountable obstacles hurdled in your way. I mean the crashes of the game, of course, not the pitiful US navy.

Tying Up Some Loose Ends

sinkingofww1blucherle2.png

Gedicke and the Imperial Staff were furious at the escape of the American dreadnaughts Delaware and Arkansas. Grand Admiral Hipper offered case of his best Riesling for the man to find and sink the two American ships. The winner of the contest was...

apr61918americanfleetnx8.png

Following this, the fleet was ordered to port in Ribe for repairs and re-supply. The British are still in control of Kiel, but they should be dealt with in short order.

apr71918fleettoribefc4.png

Along the way, the Germans ran into the entire British Fleet…
Of course that’s not nearly as scary as it used to be…

Lastly, from the News of Wierd

Oh and I thought I should mention…

swedenwarez1.png

Fresh off of losing half the country to the UK, and all of her colonial possessions to the Germans (granted it was only one province), the Swedish AI again felt adventurous and joined the Russian Civil War.

Finally things are starting to look up for the Mensheviks.

I didn't expect so much a of fight from Austria, will countries like Croatia or Slovenia join the Economic union?
The Socialist did have a decent little army built up, but it mostly was just a matter of time before the Germans cleared everything up. As to Croatia and Slovenia, I’m a little torn. Up until now, I have operated on the premise that did not want any technologically strong minorities in Germany. In other words no major land grabs in Europe (colonies are of course a different matter). I still hold to that doctrine, but it sure would be nice for Germany to have a land connection to the Mediterranean Sea.

Man what a [organized] mess the Russian Civil War has become. Looks like the rebels are making their claims known on the motherland. As well as the Ukrainians.
Actually I’ve been pretty pleased with how the AI has managed to stabilize their borders in the RCW (except for the Mensheviks). After the initial set up I haven’t had to do any additional modding for the RCW, and it has progressed nicely. Of course it will be interesting to see how Sweden’s entry in the war affects things.

BTW, what's happening in Russia? Has the whites arrived on the scene yet. Last screen they were one province away from joining the Menshevik slaughter. How doomed are the mensheviks? how suicidal are the turks? I guess they have a reason to attck Georgia now! (Hail Georgia, the new master of Caucasus and Anatolia!)
I haven’t had a chance to look in on the RCW in a little bit, but I’m sure the Royalist have reached the Mensheviks. I don’t think they have the strength to do much, but we’ll see. The Mensheviks are probably going to be the first faction to fall. (sorry Ahura Mazda). As to the Turks and Georgia, I think the Turks see the RCW as an opportunity to exploit, but they are still in a world of trouble. They suffered greatly in the war, and continue to suffer revolts throughout the empire. I think they want to make gains in the caucuses, but have little desire to get bogged down in a real war, which the Georgians would represent. I would expect the Turks to push on to the Caspian Sea, but that may be it.

What are your plans for Australia and New Zeeland ? Annex them as colonies in your glorious German Colonial Empire ?
I seriously considered that, especially New Zealand, but in the end I think it is probably unrealistic. At this point those nations would be too advanced to be mere “colonial” possessions. Plus the geography of the land and character of the inhabitants make the prospect of unending guerilla warfare seem strong. The amount of troops necessary to deal with this makes the idea of taking Oceania unappealing.

Yes I looked long and somewhat hard for anyone with a claim to the Báthory name but came up empty. The difficulty I faced should have been expected considering the fact the in real life the Hungarians couldn’t produce a king after the war.

I joke a lot, but you might actually be correct. The Swedes will probably be unopposed against the Mensheviks, and be able to make some free gains around Kola. This of course will cause the Mensheviks to pull forces away from the Bolshevik front, thus speeding up her eventual fall.

Hmm, those swedes are up to no good. I seriously propose an invasion of all Scandinavia to hinder this kind of swedenism to harm the mighty german people in the future. I don't know what kind of cunnign plans they have in Russia, but to me it seems like they secretly are collaborating with the Bolsheviks.
