Fernando, do i remember correctly that you have said, that combat loses (divisional strength losses) will be overall increased in Platinum? I found it difficult to encircle AI enemy in your mod, so if my numbers aren't largely superior, and the front become static, i use a bit gamey strategy that i called 'Meat Grinder' (something like 'ground attack' but without planes :rofl: ), and i don't know how the decreased morale in Platinum will affect it, but if the strength damage in land-to-land will be increased, it will be a great powerup for my slaughterhouses. :D

Great! :D As i have said, it's only 'something like' airforce on ground attack mission. Ground attacking planes are a nice addition to it, but not needed. The thing, that my strategy has in common with exploiting 'ground attack', is that i simply do not attack to grab another province, but i attack to do significant strength damage to units in target province.

So what i do? It something like 'anti-blitzkrieg'. I just stop my advance, gather all units that are not needed for holding the front (and someone usually don't need much for defense in WiF) around one well suited province (one that is weakly defended and can be attacked from several surrounding provinces). Then I attack with 3-division putting all the remaining units on support attack mission, and wait for victory. When my 3 divisions finally gets into target province, they are usually in few hours attacked by a lot of enemy divisions, and i immediately pull them back. When the right amount of enemies (not that much that i cannot break them, not that many that i would won too fast) reconquers the province i'm retreating from, i just repeat the process.

Infra of this province quickly falls to zero, which makes your attacks even easier, WiF's very aggressive AI retakes it again and again at any cost, battles are long in WiF, and when you use INF heavy army, you always ends up in situation where two stubborn ARM/SPArt division holds target province for many days with invincible ORG, while their friendly INF divisions have all their org gone and are now heavily bleeding out.

It just feels so right sometimes to slaughter them all, you know... :rofl:

Thanks for that hint Van der Gent.
I did this and the HQ bonus worked well for the Italians. So although I exited and reloaded the game before and still didnt receive them with germany, I´ll continue my game and just assume the best ... Maybe sometimes strange things just have to happen ...

Hope I´ll be lucky :D

Ugh.

In my experience with saved games and editing events, misc.txt, and other files...

It won't carry over to them. It's almost as if when you start the game all that info is compiled and not interpreted. Although to be honest, I haven't done any serious tests on it since Stony Road.... It could have changed.

Ugh, i got my ass kicked so hard last night! :eek: Playing ComChi (on normal, with teachteam takeover) i kicked Japanese out of continental China in 1940, then took Indochina and Afghanistan, and started a war against allies in 1942, stalemated near Singapore, stormed through the India and middle East, encircled and destroyed about 30 british divisions on Sinai, and then I finaly got to Egypt. War in Africa went well, i conquered Egypt, Ethiopia and Libia in few months... All the way from Korea to Sinai every beach was guarded by 3 garrison units, and nor allies neither Japan ever made a successful landings through that defenders. All went well, but then, suddenly, all my glorious conquests were damned>

Italy made peace with Britain, which instantly 'teleported' all my 60 divisions from Libya all the way back to China, what putted not only Egypt to be completely undefended, but drove my TC to something like 650/350, virtually paralyzing the rest (about another 70 division in Africa) of my troops. Then out of nowhere, US landed on Suez with 5 divisions, only 5(!!) days before ETA of 3 garrisons strategically redeployed to hold this beach, last one undefended beach on Euro-Asia. Before I could do anything, there were 40 American divisions in Egypt and the MiddleEast (with strong airsupport), my troops in Africa was cut out of supply a lost for good, and troops that were redeployed from Lybia to China, a and then back from China to Iraq, did't make it back in time, some American spearhead formation stormed the province that i was redeploying to, and all my non-african troops were back in my capital in Yunan.

O hell, i just love this mod. Never thought how easily could that game be lost. ;)

Okay, here are my 2 cents about this mod:

I've played four games with it by now, always on Superhuman AI. :D

1st one: Italy
Everything went fine, I built up a very nice army ... and was shocked when I got stucked in Egypt after two days of my offensive.
I was so disappointed that I dropped the game
Well, as I said, my first game with WiF. :D

2nd one: Japan
Wow! The Chinese were so mean. After a battle, which lasted almost two months in a single province, and where some 160 divisions fought each other it was over.
I won the battle, but the Chinese were faster with their redeployment then I was.
Was no fun.

3rd one: Germany
Wanna make it short: Poland fell after 13 days of fighting. But my west offensive was doomed from the very beginning, because the French kept attacking Freiburg with more than 50 divisions and I had to leave a strong garrison there. So I had not enough troops for my first push.
Got stucked in Arnheim.
No fun either.

4th one: United States
GEEZ! A hell of a game!! :D
The Germans defeated France really quick and invited Nat.Spain, which joined the Axis. Then, they attacked my after this Bifröst event fired. So I was at war with the Axis in late 1940. Okay that.
But, after I've made the Chinese surrender event fire in March 1940 (I wanted a strong Japan as an opponent :D) and after they declared war on me in December 1941, the game went totally out of control. :D

The Japanese conquered all of India, and are right now in Persia with some 80 divisions and try to break through the British defences right there. They are on the best way to annex Australia, after they kicked my butt in New Guinea and take over island after island.
The Germans have a really weird time in Russia. The Norther front of the East is now somewhat northern of Königsberg, while their southern front is at Stalingrad and in Turkey, which joined the Axis in early 1942.

Right now I am trying to get Turkey out of the war, so that the British forces in Persia don't have to worry about their back.
But the Germans keep sending division after division from the Kaukasus.
I had a nice battle with Japan somewhere east of Australia, in which I managed to take out four of their 16 carriers.

THIS game is SO MUCH fun. :D

BUT! there are some things I have to say:

1) Germany is running out of MP pretty soon, I had to help them several times with an event so that they could keep their armies in a good shape.
Same for Japan and the Soviet Union.

2) The German AI doesn't really seem to know what to do with all it's divisions.
They have some hotspots, where they have dozens of them, but at some point they are so weak that they are inviting the soviets to run all the way through Berlin.

I love this US game, and I wonder how long it will take me to end this war. :D

After all it's an awesome mod, for which I have to thank you. :)

First of all. I love your mod. I am now playing italy. Its is now 1942 and i have pushed the english to south afrika. conquert spain and the uk mainland. I think in real life, the english would have surrendert but i dont think you made a event for that so i made one. But want your opinion. Because I still want to play a realistic game.

The best for surrender events is to make them happens in 2 steps:

1. Peace, while the defeated country grant the other military access

2. Province scession: the defeated country scede the territory and grant independence to potential revolters a few days after the first event.


It is definatly the best way to proceed, as annoying errors could happens in Majoor de Wit's (still well screipted) event.

For exemple, lets say for some reason, an Axis country other than Italy conquered any of the provinces to be sceded in the peace event. Then, after the peace, neither of Italy or its ally will get the province because it was unpossible to scede it to Italy.

The same can happen in the Bitter Peace, it often happens when Romania conquers some provinces beyond Bessarabia and those provinces ends up being Soviet after the BP.

Also,I think it should be triggered by ENG not controlling the mentioned provinces,and not by ITA controlling them.
This event should be a bit expanded though,as Churchill or other people that are strongly against Hitler would probably continue to fight from the unoccupied colonies.

After days and days of whining to me, I agreed with a friend of mine to start playing WiF.

I have to say I am totally suprised by the mod. Its battle system is unique and I suddently felt like a noob! :D
I hardly ever play a nation other than Ger, and the first time I played I annexed Poland in 2 weeks, but then lost Freiburg and in a matter of weeks half Germany. So I quit the game out of frustration. The 2nd and 3th games were also very worse for Germany since I got bugged down in Belgium. Finaly after many hours I set up Vichy France in my 4th game. Now I turned my eyes on Russia. I've played at least 6 games as Ger since then and I never got to the gates of neither Moskau, Leningrad nor Stalingrad.

Now my question is, how on earth do you guys defeat the Soviets? Their numbers are simply to high, I have complete air superiority and enough mot. inf. and arm. Still, I can hardly breaktrough because the lack of MP Germany faces... I have tried like 3 different approches, and all failed.

Any tips? (exept playing on a easier level, which I won't! :p)

Which difficulty level are you playing with ?

Death and Glory wrote an interesting guide a few days ago :

Right, first of all, you need 20 divisions in each province on the westwall. Any less and there's a pretty good chance the French will try and attack. I always build 60 militia divisions (called reserve divisions in WiF) and stack them all on the westwall. Later on these are used to defend beaches (they will actually become semi-good units in 1943 and are a great low manpower way of guarding Italy and France, but until 1943 they suck and should be used as nothing more than a garrison force).

I also scatter 4 infantry divisions in each westwall province too, so each province in the end has 24 divisions. Never seen the French try and go through that. When I was a n00b to WiF and tried only using a few divisions on the westwall aka like vanilla, the French broke through and kicked my ass. Even if you deal with them post-Poland, you still suffer having the Ruhr occupied and lose a lot of IC and manpower while you're mopping up. Worse, winter could set in and you'd be stuck with the French occupying large parts of Germany until the spring! No, the French must not break through.

Now, against Poland, you want to group all your MOT/ARM divisions in Oppeln. Put around 20 divisions in Strettin/Kustrin, and have a token force guarding Breslau and that other province bordering Poland too. If you don't defend East Prussia, I actually think taking Poland is easier as they will move troops to occupy the no-VP lands of Konisburg and Memel. On the downside, you will lose 6 IC from Konisburg and the manpower while you take over Poland, though this is more than compensated by the fact you won't have to fight extra divisions or build any transports, IMO.

Anyway, group all the rest of your stuff in Oppeln, and smash through the Polish lines until you get a province bordering Warsaw. This should be done by September 3rd. This will make the Soviets declare war, and from there it's an easy mop up job. When you attack Warsaw (and any other urban province in WiF really) attack the provinces next to it as well so the AI can't send a huge stack of reinforcements. Above all, do not allow Poland to retreat all it's divisions back to Warsaw. You want to encircle them before you cross the Vistula, and in Southern Poland. If you have an airforce, put it on interdiction.

By the way, make sure you have 16 interceptors by Danzig, otherwise you'll get owned by French and British strategic combers in the Sitzkrieg.

Now, when you attack France, you need to create "holding" attacks. You must choose areas you will draw their army to, and once you've done this, send your armour and motorised units through to capture France. What I normally do is use Antwerp as a holding attack, while overunning the Netherlands. Send the rest of your army through southern Belgium, and create another holding attack at Rheims. You should be using infantry for these attacksand only moving the armour after the battle is won, or nearly won.

Wait a day or two until the French have moved to defend Rheims/Antwerp, then send your tanks and motorised units through Liege, Mons, Lille etc. There won't be much defending against you as everything will be busy fighting massive battles in Rheims and Antwerp. Quickly overrun undefended France with your tanks, and the job is done.

The Soviet Union is a different matter entirely, and victory should not be expected within 1 year as it is on vanilla. To briefly describe what is otherwise a quite intense war, you should pick one area of the Soviet Union to focus on- North or South. All your tanks and mots, along with your airforce should be focused in that area, with the objective been to overwhelm the Soviets along one part of the front, then later on (perhaps as much as in summer 1942) attack at the front you didn't attack in 1941. I generally attack the South first as that's where their oil and their resources are located, and leave the North until later.

I've never seen a WiF mod where in 1942 the German player had beaten the Soviet Union and were "finishing the allies", if by "finishing" you mean a sealion/invasion the mainland USA. You'd have to be a tactical god to be doing that by 1942, expecially on the harder levels. What you should be focusing on is defeating France and Poland by mid-1940, minimising your manpower losses, and be prepared to face the world from 1942 onwards.

When we say "attack the whole front" we mean "attack the provinces next to the province you really want to take.

For instance, if I wanted to capture Beltsy while fighting the Soviets, it would be wise for me to launch an attack on Iasi as well, so the Soviets don't rush troops to Beltsy to halt your offensive.

The attacks on the secondary provinces don't have to involve huge numbers of troops, they just have to keep the enemy occupied until you have blitzed through the province you really wish to capture. In the Battle of France, you want to be able to occupy the enemy in the holding attacks for about 10-14 days, which will give you time to take France.

It is not neccesary to attack every enemy province bordering all of yours at once however- you have to pick and choose where you wish to engage the enemy army, and then launch your strong attacks in other places after they have moved a large army to defend the provinces you are using to "hold" them in place.

This is also ideal to encircle. Hold a massive enemy army in place while your panzers do the encirclement, then finish their army off.

The AI does get some free divisions, though IIRC on normal/normal the Soviets dont get any against Germany, and on challange/normal they only start getting free divisions after you cross the Dniper. It can sometimes seem they are getting free divisions however, as the Soviets have so much manpower and so will build a lot of divisions.

The only free divisions they get in abundance are transport ships. I don'tb like it that you can't cripple the enemies ability to transport troops by sinking their transports as they simply get more the next day, but I'd rather have the AI get some free transports, then not see D-Day or an invasion of Italy.

Looking at your post, I can see some stuff wrong with your army composition. First of all, you need an airforce, even if it's just a few bombers and interceptors. They are of immense help in the longer battles and to thin out enemy troops.

You also don't have enough mobile troops, assuming you only built ARM and no MOT. I try to have 60 MOT/30 ARM by Operation Barbarossa. Yes, it's a lot of TC and oil, but the hardness of the units is invaluble in the longer battles, and MOT are a cheap way to capture lots of ground. Your number of infantry seems OK- you might want to brigade them however. I like rocket artillery.

Even if you don't beat the Soviet Union by the end of 1942, don't panic. While it's true the longer the war goes on the worse it gets for Germany, with wise trading to build up a pre war stockpile, and a sensible strategy to conserve manpower, the allied landings can be beaten back, allowing for a renewed campaign against the Soviets. At the start of 1943 you get 300 manpower from Goebbels's "total war" speech, and I believe another event fires soon after to give another 300 manpower.

I heartily recommend 1943 militia to defend Italy and France from allied assaults, brigaded if possible with rocket artillery. You also need a few armoured divisions in France (which you can build in 1942-43), and you'll need some interceptors unless you enjoy been strat bombed to death.

It is certainly possible to have North Africa and France, and having beaten much of the red army by 1942, though I always leave North Africa solely to Italy, and they normally fail against the Brits as they did in real life.

You'll definetly need some motorised infantry. I made a thread a while back however, on why you shouldn't group them together. This means, have stacks of 3 ARM, and stacks of 3 MOT, but never stacks of 1 ARM/2 MOT. The reason been the MOT de-organises faster than the ARM, thus will take massive manpower losses if you leave the ARM fighting in the same stack.

To be honest, I normally build all the MOT's I need (60) pre-Danzig, and start churning out the ARM (30) once all the MOT is completed. This generally means I'll only have the 3 tanks that you get at the start to defeat Poland with, I'll have a few more tanks for France, but the majority of the panzers are only completed after France has fallen.

You will need 16 interceptors before you go to war- one group of 8 to defend the Westfalen area, and one group of 8 defending the Baden-Wurttenberg area. You won't need any airforce against Poland really- you'll have 8 TAC bombers from your starting force, and Austria normally builds a couple, which is enough to deal with any problems in Poland. You don't really need anymore than this to take France either, so long as your strategy is good and quickly executed after you attack the Benelux countries. For the Soviets, I'd recommend at least 16 TAC bombers. After the war starts with the Soviets, start increasing your interceptor numbers again, as you'll need them to defend France once the USA begins their strat bombing campaign, as well to defend your own forces from the Soviet airforce.

Good luck. Don't expect to win your first few games though, it's a tricky mod.

I love the mod but have a few questions

1 what is GDE and what does it do?

2 I have played a game historicaly tit 1 sept 39 but the molotov ribbentopf pact didnt fire? anyone know why?

3 how effective is a submarine war vs convoys in this mod?
