THE WILES OF THE SHAMROCK

So, I recently got HOIII for my birthday and played some games, just to get the hang of it. First, Finland beat me when I was Sweden (and puppeting Norway), while the UK was absolutely smashed in WWII. :( It went to the point where I had to leave tech and production to the AI, because God knows I wasn't going to use it well. So, I decided to start this AAR to perhaps get some pointers. I am definetely a NOOB. So what better country to start with than my home country,

IRELAND!!!!!
What people have said:
You broke the map as well as the text :(-Ikareses
what a fun AAR!-Pelican Sam

The Diary of Donal Buckley, Prime Minister of Ireland
1/1/36
Ah...it's good to be Prime Minister! I should probably see who's in my cabinet.

Hmm...well, there's me, in my glorious splendor. My fine mind can protect us from outside influences well enough! But I don't like the look of this Eamon de Valera character: two jobs?? In my administration? We'll take care of him later. Next up is Sean MacEntree; fine Irish name there! And such a capitalist, too! I like him. Patrick J. Rutladge...I don't know...he's rather silent, and usually carrying around some sort of briefcase. But I like his face, so he can stay. Gerald Boland is Head of Intelligence. My spies tell me that he's rather good at sniffing out info. I might have to change him though. M.J. Costello, School of Defense...doesn't sound like a very nice school. Then there's me again...apparently I'm elastic. Huh. Oh, well. H.T Green, he looks very officia;. And P.A. Mulchahy has a fun name; I might keep him around. Now, for the cabinet changes!

First Mulcahy, he's better at spying during peace because he's a...pacifist? Moving on...

Ah, a fellow Dismal Enigma...wonder if he knows Canaris? Should probably ask...anyway, he's pudgy, and you know how I'm partial to tubby people, Diary.

Wait...this is MY job! Gah...such a fool! I hope Frank didn't notice. At least my soldiers won't turn into rotting corpses...
Also, Diary, you can see a sketch of politics in the Republic of Ireland made by yours truly. Apparently the Fine Gaels are on top. I think I'm with them. Probably. Woah-Sinn Fein is a COMMIE party??? I never could have guessed...and the Gaelic Union, whatever they are. Wait a min-are the National Socialists Fascist? But...their name...has socialism...
Now to matters less complicated:

Ah. My beautiful spy ring! Sigh...(drool appears on page)
Oops, sorry, Diary! Guess I got kinda carried away. Dontcha just love spies? Anyway, I'm using mine to by using propaganda and scaremongering tactics, we will sway the public opinion away from neutrality and toward intervention. Huh. 'K. Seems cool. Also...Albania??? Really?? the only thing they have there is mules...
And, needless to say, we will also increase the threat of the Huns.

Well, I guess if you can't beat the British, join them...? Eamon told me that all the cool kids in Europe were doing it. But I thought that Germany and the Soviets were cool, with their goatees and little mustaches that look like the cat dragged them in, and coffee and national executions...!

Personally, I could care less. But Eamon says that, if I want to keep in power, I have to do what he says, and that means speeches. It's always speeches and politics with Eamon. We never ever get to play, like we used to.

But at least all our laundries are built up to the fullest. Take that, Anglicans! Our laundries are top-notch and nun-employing!

What's this? Some soldiers in western Germany say that they rightfully own the land? The man with the strange mustache and high voice said so on TV. Odd. Eamon says that he plans to take over Europe. Eamon never lets me watch Sesame Street.

We have a navy? I wondered what that huge iron thing in the dock was. But Eamon says I can't bring my stuffed animals aboard! It's unfair! You always loved the Armed forces more than me!

Eamon ordered that a new division be constructed. I wanted to call it the Flying Saucers, but Eamon refused, and said I could name it the Thunderbolt. I said ok, but only for some ice cream after dinner. He said yes! Yay!

I don't know what this means. Eamon says it helps with cool stuff like guns. Awesome!

That's it for now! Let me know what you think about the format and gameplay. Comments make me feel warm and fuzzy inside. :D

Oh. Thanks. For some reason, imgur wasn't working for my HOI3 screenshots. Also, a little note: this HOI3 1.04, no expansions, no DLCs. :( Since I game on a Mac, I can't buy the expansions. Also, for some reason the country names do not show up for me. Any thoughts?

The thing for the country names is simple - HoI3 with no expansions have no country names. They come with Semper Fi and onward.

Ireland is something like playing Latvia, but you don't have the Soviet beast on you. You play a fully neutral state, but as I remember, you only have a VP in Dublin. Protect it! And you could add another militia brigade with your divisions, just to make them more useful.

As Latvia, I would make a lot of 2xMIL and 1xINF divisions, but remember, I'm playing with HPP!If you are playing the original, you should get the laws, that give you control of all of the IC. Otherwise, put some armor brigades as support meat. If you can't utilize the 15 IC, I wouldn't suggest that.

And I would suggest to you to make artillery brigades. If you fight against Germany or Britain, it WILL be useful for your divisions.

^This.

Artillery divisions will be handy in any way, you could go for INF/INF/ART and maybe make a garrison division to put in Dublin (just to be sure).

What is your goal with Ireland? Or if you don't have a set goal yet, what techs are you planning on going for?

Also, merry christmas! And subbed!

Thanks! Yeah, all good suggestions. My goal is to join either Allies or Axis and take back Ulster. (Probably Axis) My techs? I put up a screenshot.

The Diary of Donal Buckley- to the end of '36

El Presidente offered me some Monopoly money in exchange for some crates. I happily agreed. Eamon got kinda angry, but I got some cool crates to play in. Yah!

Some dudes wearing turbans gave us some barrels of black sticky stuff. I had to wash my hands after Eamon caught me playing in it. :( But I guess now we have enough fuel to power our big trucks! Vroom Vroom!

Meanwhile, Eamon told me about the Italians in Ethi-opia, wherever that is. He said they were being cruelly oppressed by the Italians. Apparently that means getting stomped in the face by a boot and other bad stuff. Eamon makes me sad. He said that since the cowardly Brits and American pigs were't doing anything, we had to join the Italians and Germans in a "desperately pragmatic" move. Huh. Too many big words.

Now we got more batteries for my toy car. And all I needed to give them was some of my piggy bank money.

According to Eamon, we need more batteries. But my toy cars are working fine...

The Germans wanted more metals for their toys,so Eamon made me give it to them. :(

Ireland: world supplier of crates.

I finally got my Thunder bolts! Yippee! Eamon says I can't bother them. Also, my military is really puny.

Wow. Some dude got shot. ((Quickly hides Red Ryder Carbine Rifle)) Eamon led the Chief of the Army handle it, which apparently people don;t like. Oh well.

Sorry, I lied. Not exactly to the end of '36. :) Merry Christmas!

The Diary of the Irish Head of Government: Eamon's View

El Presidente wanted more world-class Irish supplies. I duly accepted.

My imagining, Diary, of what the world would look like split into pyramids and factions.See, there's the strong Germans, and their allies the Japs. There's the ineffectual Brits and effeminate Frogs. And finally, the misguided little bastards of Europe: the USSR, Mongolia, and Tannu Tuva. I'm thinking of going to the Germans.

Even the Finnish have heard of our world-class crates!

The people reacted furiously to the Italian slander that our crates are second-class. There was a demonstration organized by the Church to 'turn the other cheek', as they say. "Even if the crates of Italia are 3rd-class, there is no reason to rub their 3rd-class crates into their 3rd-class-crate faces!" Followed by much cheering.

Our small arms are so advanced, even Tyrannosauruses are impressed. Geddit? Cause T. Rex's have really small arms! Gah...now Donal's gonna want a new dinosaur toy for his birthday...:(

This is Ireland, at the end of '36. An eventful year, where several powers got their legs and we got more beer. Happy times. Happy times...

Finally, it is the end of '36! I will definitely follow everybody's suggestions; I am new to this. Remember: comments make me feel warm and fuzzy! I especially want comments about my writing style. :)

Nice to see the difference between the fun and games of Buckley and the serious, parental look of Eamon. It is very enjoyable to read!

About advice, I can't give anything else, then what I said. I could get 2 parallel runs of 3xINF when I played an Ireland game. But as I said, I have HPP, which gives you control of those nice 15 IC, which can make you some nice 10-12 divisions.

As I said, Ireland is like playing a isolated Latvia, cause you have those 7-8 IC at the beginning, so I would suggest create divisions like this: 2xINF with a militia brigade. Not very effective, but better then just 2xINF, and you can manage to push out 7-9 divisions, if you decide to go to war by 1940.

GreatüberGeek Productions presents...

1937: the play

Act 1
Scene 1: a Russian office

Donal: Forsooth, fair maiden, for yonder window breaks, and thou art the sun, and-

Eamon: Sigh...wrong play, Donal.

D: What? Whoops. What's this play about?

E:It's about the first third of 1937. In Ireland. and the world.

D:Oh. Ahem...
My comrade, Eamon, I have heard news from the East! News of a purge!

E: A purge? A purge, you daresay? What vile, malevolent, creature, would do such a thing?
(image of The Great Officer Purge-sorry, guys! My screenshots didn't show up!)
Mayhaps a creature of darkness, a creature that dredges the halls-alright, who wrote this crap?

GuG: I did! Pretty good, isn't it?

E: It's a pile of steaming horse sh**.

GuG: (sobs silently)

D: What did you say, Eamon?

E: er...Rich?

D: No, no, before that.

E:eek:h...um, Frappe? I wanted a Frappe?

D: Sighs...okay. (gets Frappe for Eamon)

E:Now, onward with out play!

Scene 2: a factory near Dublin

E: Have the orders been shipped?

D: Yes, yes, yes. Can I go play in the snow now?

E: No. Explain to me what exactly you ordered.

D: I think it was 2 Infranties, and one Artillery. I'm pretty sure.

E: (double-take) Our factories can't handle that!

D: (shrugs)

Scene 3: a market

E: Mmmm...can you smell that Donal?

D: You mean the rich, exotic aroma of the Danishes? Indeed.

E: No,no. I meant the smell of capitalism and an economy on overdrive.
(Picture of economic boost event here)
D: Oh. Can I still get a Danish?

E: Yeah, yeah, sure. I can practically see the factories working harder...faster...(starts drooling)

D: Snap out of it!

E:Oops...well, folks, it's May [SUP]1st[/SUP], so that was the first third of 1937...the play!

D:And just wait until we get syndicated with a national talk show and cartoons!

E:Shut up! On't-day eveal-ray the lans-pay!

Pretty good actually! When I saw the play, I thought I wouldn't like, as I go hard critic when I read narrative parts, but it was well written, and kept the subtle comedy style with it. An enjoyable read!

When I was reading the part of economical overdrive, I was in big hopes, that you got a better economical law, but then I read the part of a economical boost picture... Those were good news and bad news for me (don't know about you), as a economical boost is always a good thing, but you have to use your country as a regular nation, instead of something like Peru (which, if I can remember, can use War economy from the very start).

1937: The Play
Act II

Scene I

E: Oh my, It seems that Italia has joined a faction...

D: What does it concern us?

E: Well, it gives us more reason to join the Axis, I suppose, and we would get free pizza!

D: Woohoo! Can I join the Axis? Pleasepleaseplease?

E: I don't know...that Hitler guy looks fishy...

D: C'mon! Please, Eamon...
(several hours pass)
E: Fine! Just-stop asking!

Scene 2

Workers: Strike! strike! strike!

D: Annnnd you're out! In the ballll game!

E: Donal, this is Ireland, not America.

D: Is it? That would explain why, when I tried to make a trade deal with the Phillipines, they looked at me like I was crazy.

Workers: (throws stuff at the two)

E: Alright! We get it! Next scene please!

GüG: Fine, fine...(grumbles)
Scene 3
Politician: So, Mr. de Valera, what do you say to that?

E: (sighs) Get out, O'Malley. You are a drunkard, not a politician.

O'Malley: (Harrumphs) Very well, Eamon, but this isn't the last you'll see of me! (turns and walks out with nose in the air, walks into pillar)

GüG: Several months later...

E: (groans) Oh god...The Drunkard Party? Party Platform: Lower the Drinking Age to 7! To hell with the Brits! and the Americans! And (hic) the Martians! (collapses into drunken stupor)
(shouts at sky) Damn you, O'Malley!

D: Well, thanks for watching, folks. Hope you had a good time!

GüG: Hey! Those are my lines!

D: (sticks out tongue) Well, too bad! I didn't have any lines!
