The Election 1974

The early 1970s were the most unstable years in British history since the war as the country was wracked by terrorism, economic woe, industrial action and widespread social instability. The bountiful post-war era had come to a shattering close. After five years of Conservative rule the country was left with a frightening conundrum – to turn or not to turn.

Conservative Party

Political Position: Right

Ideology: Conservatism

Description:

After securing a stunning electoral victory in 1969, that saw the party record its best result since 1935, the Conservatives looked to challenge the post-war consensus directly and achieved a great deal as they slashed public spending and made the first steps towards privatising key assets of the mixed economy. Having recovered from the dark period that followed the Miners’ Strike of 1972, the Tories are eager to secure a new mandate to continue their work in restructuring British society – even as voices of doubt persist within the party.

Party Leader: Enoch Powell

After leading the Tories to their spectacular 1969 election victory Powell’s leadership credentials were detested by major labour disputes, domestic terrorism, violence in Northern Ireland and international crises. Through all these events he appeared a strong, if overly uncompromising, figure. As the Conservatives moved towards a new election in 1974 the Prime Minister’s personal appeal was of great value to the Tory electoral machine as it geared up for a new contest.

Foreign Policy:

Britain must remain committed, as ever, to the NATO alliance and the defence of the free world against the expansion of totalitarianism. We must make clear our support for our allies, and not undermine the integrity of our alliance, but at the same time retain an independence of action in our foreign policy.

This government has brought an end to the Liberal-Labourite practise of abandoning British interests and British allies around the world. We have supported our friends against Communist inspired rebellions in Libya, Yemen, Oman and Malaysia and shall continue to stand in support of Britain and her allies around the world!

The invasion of Jordan by the forces of the United Arab Republic must be condemned! Britain guarantees the borders of all states in the Middle East against future Ba’athist aggression!

We shall oppose any future efforts to bring the United Kingdom into the EEC. Our economic and political independence cannot be compromised.

The Conservative Party condemns minority rule in Southern Africa and does not recognise the illegal Rhodesian regime, born from a rebellion against Great Britain, as legitimate.

We support close economic and political integration between Britain and the nations of the Commonwealth.

Domestic Policy:

This government has decisively brought an end to Britain’s era of decline. The hardships of 1970-1972 have placed our country on a much stronger footing. Inflation no longer dashes incomes and eats away at savings, men and women across our country now take home a fatter pay check now they are no longer forced to finance the welfare dependent, ours is a country in which the British values of hard work and ingenuity are returning to the fore. Ours is a country ready to flourish!

Although much has been accomplish, there is still much more to be done! Through the period of recession the Labour-Communist controlled trade union movement has shown its disdain for democracy and its willingness to sow chaos – holding our nation to ransom. This cannot continue. The Conservative Party proposes a series of laws that will limit the power of trade unions to continue to wreak havoc, strengthening the power of Britain’s democratic institutions.

We must pursue further privatisations in the less profitable sectors of state run industry. The Party continues to support a flexible, monetarist economic policy focussed upon maintaining a low level of inflation and strong growth. This is the road to prosperity!

We support the strengthening of the immigration controls introduced by the present government. We hope to place greater limits on the numbers of migrants allowed to enter and settle in the country – prioritising skilled workers.

The Conservative Party opposes to granting of further powers to the devolved parliaments in Scotland and Wales, but accepts their continued functioning.

We must continue to support the modernisation of our armed forces through generous funding. Britain must continue to fulfil her fundamentally important role as a defender of freedom and the rule of law around the world.

The Conservative Party shall continue to use all necessary measures to combat and defeat domestic terrorism. British citizens shall not live in fear; neither shall they compromise with armed extremists willing to employ violence and murder against the civilian population.

The Conservative Party supports the authority of the elected government of Northern Ireland unquestionably and shall do everything possible to facilitate its victory over terrorism in the province.

Only the Conservative Party can make Britain Great again!

Labour Party

Political Position: Centre-Left

Ideology: Social Democracy, Democratic Socialism

Description:

Having come a long way under Hugh Gaitskell, the Labour Party found itself in an awkward position as the Tories clashed with the labour movement in the early 1970s. At once lacking influence over the greatest excesses of the militant Communist-affiliated trade union leaders who came to the fore during the Steel Workers’ Strike of 1971 and Miners’ Strike of 1972, yet appearing the only credible opposition to the Conservatives. With the Liberals in chaos Labour appeared to be just that – the only party capable of defeating the Conservatives and restoring the Centre-Left to power.

Party Leader: Denis Healey

The Steel Workers’ Strike of 1971 brought an end to Hugh Gaitskell’s leadership of the Labour Party, the Miners’ Strike the following year proved to be the making of Denis Healey’s. Appearing a cool headed oasis of calm in the face of the militancy of the unions, the vitriol of the Tories and the confusion of the Liberals, Healey’s calls for arbitration gave him a statesmanlike appeal. When the Conservatives eventually folded and cut a deal with the NUM in December 1972 many saw it as a victory for Labour’s policy. Just over a year on, Denis Healey is hopeful that he can lead his party to power and become Labour’s first Prime Minister since Clement Attlee resigned in 1950 – almost a quarter of a century ago.

Foreign Policy:

Above all else, Britain must be an ally of democracy and freedom around the world. The only way to achieve that goal, to oppose the spread of Soviet Totalitarianism around the world, is for Britain to accept its role as a member of the NATO alliance. Britain stands united with the free world.

We must refuse to allow British servicemen to become involved in wars on foreign shores that are not our own. However we will move to protect the members of the British Commonwealth from subversion. Should any Commonwealth member request aid we shall deploy military advisors as well as provide arms and aid in combatting anti-democratic subversion. The aid sent to Malaysia by the present government and its predecessors shall remain in place.

The Labour Party calls for Britain to play a leading role in bringing an end to the long conflicts that have ravaged South-East Asia and threaten to engulf the Middle East. Let us be an arbiter of peace internationally.

Labour opposes future attempts to propose British entry into the EEC. However, the party supports the calling of a referendum on the issue so that the British people might decide.

Labour supports the right to self-determination of all remaining British colonial possessions. We shall grant independence to any remaining colony in which the population favour it and shall aid the country in its transition towards an independent democracy.

We wish to see the Commonwealth become a body of economic and political cooperation between free peoples around the world. It must be used to encourage democracy and support the economic development of all its members. The party therefore advocates closer ties between the constituent nations of the Commonwealth.

Labour denounces the racialised dictatorships of South Africa and the rebellious Republic of Rhodesia in the strongest terms and calls for Britain to serious take diplomatic action against these states. Moreover, we call for an embargo against both South Africa and Rhodesia until political prisoners are released and steps towards majority rule are taken.

Likewise, we believe that Portugal and Spain must offer their colonial possessions self-determination and shall apply diplomatic pressure against the last dictatorships in Western Europe in pursuit of those ends.

Domestic Policy:

The policies of the present government have been a disaster for this country. They blighted us with recession, promoted the acceleration of unemployed to levels not seen since the Great Depression, they have led to the collapse of our steel industry as asset stripping financiers gut our economic infrastructure, they have directly assaulted incomes, shown disdain for the poorest, deliberately provoked industrial unrest and failed to resolve the conflict in Northern Ireland. Only a Labour government can save Britain from the horrors of another five years of Tory rule, a rule this country may not be able to survive.

The Labour Party calls for the protection of all existing nationalised industries and the welfare state. We promote an increase in welfare spending in order to assist the poorest, shunted to the margins of society under Tory rule, investment in public services and our countries’ infrastructure (the modernisation of industry being far more preferable than the Conservative policy of dismantling it wholesale!) and the renationalisation of what remains of our steel industry. Labour promotes greater efficiency within state controlled industry as well as worker participation in management.

Labour advocates major cuts to defence spending with outdated equipment phased out entirely. We advocate a smaller, less costly, more modern and professional army that will allow Britain to continue to play her necessary role as a part of the NATO alliance but will not see our nation weighed down by the expenditure. The Labour Party would therefore also bring an end to conscription entirely and move towards a professional army.

The Conservative policy of simply arming the Unionist government of Northern Ireland is no way to achieve lasting peace. Instead, the Labour Party calls for an agreement that shall ensure power sharing between Nationalist and Unionist communities – protecting the civil rights and security of all communities within the province.

Labour stands unshakeably against the ‘People’s Army’ terrorist organisation and shall take strong action to eliminate the threat to British civilians. The entire British people unite in their condemnation of murderous terror tactics, Labour shall not err until the group is defeated and the British people can feel fully safe in their homes once more.

Labour stands for a nation united against extremism, a country in which economic prosperity and social justice might be achieved – a country in which all citizens can flourish!

Communist Party of Great Britain

Political Position: Far Left

Ideology: Anti-Revisionist Communism, Maoism

Description:

The dawn of the 1970s had seen the Communist Party of Great Britain truly come into its own. Whilst in the past it had been the party of protest, the tribune of the oppressed and the standard bearer of the international Communist movement in Britain – from the early 1970s it took on the mantle of the party of struggle. With its associated trade union leaders dominating several key industrial unions, none more important than the National Union of Miners, the Communists had emerged from their long political isolation to take centre stage in the erupting class conflict of the 1970s. Having sufficiently distanced themselves from adventurist elements like the People’s Army, the CPGB leadership purging a number of suspected sympathisers, the Communists had avoided being stained by association with the terrorists and appeared ready to continue to lead industrial struggles.

Party Leader:

Through 1960s Reg Birch’s leadership of the Communist Party had appeared outmoded and authoritarian even as it preserved a distinct political radicalism that made the Party toxic to all other political factions in parliament and took it closer to its trade unionist base. That distance created in the 1960s from politics served Birch well in the industrial struggles of the early 1970s – Birch often appearing a more legitimate political face for the great Steel Workers’ and Miners’ strikes of 1971 and 1972 than Labour leaders who attempted to harness the strikes. Now approaching his 60th birthday, Birch’s leadership over the party is unquestioned.

Foreign Policy:

The Communist Party of Great Britain advocates the immediate withdrawal of Britain from the American controlled NATO alliance – we shall never again be lapdogs of Yankee Imperialism.

We call for the establishment of British neutrality in the conflict between the American Imperialism and Soviet Social-Imperialism. We must instead look to stand alongside all those nations that resist the imperial pretensions of the two superpowers – most notably the People’s Republic of China.

Britain must relinquish all remaining colonial possessions – granting independence the peoples still aching under imperial domination. Likewise we must support the anti-imperialist struggles for independence being waged around the world – in the Portuguese colonial Empire, in South Africa, in Rhodesia, in South-East Asia, the Middle East, Latin America and elsewhere.

Under no circumstances should Britain seek entry into the EEC.

Domestic Policy:

The Communist Party of Great Britain stands against class collaboration and any alliance with the bourgeois Liberal Party or the corrupted Labour Party. Socialism cannot be won through parliamentary intrigues and alliances; it is won by the struggle of the masses! The ruling class in this country will not be brought down by the ballot box.

We hope to support the nationalisation of all sectors of British industry as we move towards a planned economy. At the same time we promote a greater role for workers in the management of industry. We encourage major investment in the improvement of housing, and economic infrastructure across the country with a focus on the most deprived areas. We also hope to see wages in both the public and private sectors rise and the living conditions of British citizens are improve drastically as the working class assumes its rightful share of the nation’s wealth.

We call for the abolition of the monarchy, the House of Lords and all other bastions of nepotism and privilege that pockmark the constitutional make up of our nation.

The Communist Party calls for the withdrawal of British forces from Northern Ireland and the unification of Ireland into a single, socialist, Republic.

We advocate the intensification of the class struggle in this country through the propagation of genuine, revolutionary, Marxism-Leninism and unconditional support for workers in all struggles. As the level of class struggle rises, the true Communists in this country shall always act as leaders – showing the way forward to the next stage of the struggle, and ultimately, towards revolution!

The Communist Party denounces the adventurist terrorism of the ‘People’s Army’. We shall stand bravely in the defence of the workers’ movement against these treacherous wreckers! In 1971, when the working class was in open battle with the bourgeoisie, the People’s Army intervened to ensure the workers’ defeat. The result was the collapse of a large part of this country’s steel industry, mass redundancies and a terrible blow to the working class. This is all the People’s Army can achieve, it must be defeated. Against the false-flag bourgeois wreckers! With the workers’ movement! For Socialism and the People! Long Live the Revolution!

Liberal Party (Yellow)
- Leadership Faction

Political Position: Centre

Ideology: Liberalism, Social Liberalism

Description:

The leadership of the Liberal Party had changed little since the Grimond era. Still authoritarian, still lacklustre – they had successfully won back some of the radicalism of old with the adoption of a number of ‘cause célèbre’ from firmly within the bounds of New Liberalism. Nonetheless, the party was in dire straits and desperately needed a strong showing at the polls to hold itself together.

Party Leader: Jeremy Thorpe

Faction Leader: Jeremy Thorpe

Thorpe was supposed to represent a clean break with the late-Grimonite era that would restore the glory days of the mid to late 1950s and early 1960s. Whilst an individually talented politician, Thorpe struggled to bring unity to the party and restore the vigour that had characterised it during the period in which it dominated British politics. With much of the country groaning under Tory rule and Labour not yet fully secure as the leaders of the Left, the former Chancellor of the Exchequer was hopeful that a strong electoral campaign could see the Liberals roar back into governmental power.

Foreign Policy:

The Liberal Party supports Britain’s involvement in the NATO alliance, and the defence of the free world against Communist totalitarianism, wholeheartedly.

The Liberal Party supports arbitration, the United Nations and the international law in all international disputes. In the nuclear age it is imperative that nations solve their differences through peace, not military means.

However, where arbitration proves impossible, the Liberal Party is not opposed to the limited use of force in the interests of Great Britain and her citizens.

The Liberal Party supports the strengthening of economic and political ties with the nations of the Commonwealth.

The Liberal Party supports the entrance of Britain into the EEC as soon as possible! The changed political situation on the continent means that the road to entry is finally open for the United Kingdom. Entry into Europe shall have an immensely beneficial effect on the British economy by allowing for free trade between Britain and its most important trading partners – the nations of Western Europe. The Liberal Party refuses to enter into any government that does not bring Britain into the EEC.

The Liberal Party condemns the Republic of South Africa and the illegal regime in South Rhodesia unreservedly. Britain shall refuse to have any diplomatic relations with the regime in South Rhodesia.

Domestic Policy:

The Liberal Party must remain a distinctively Liberal institution. It must be freed from the constraints of socialist ideology to pursue innovative and effective Liberal responses to the problems facing our nation, free to act as a unified body to serve the people of this country. We therefore call for a narrower party based on our fundamental ideals – not a loose Centrist coalition.

Liberals must demand proportional representation! The Liberal Party commits itself to refusing to enter any government that does not take seriously the need for electoral reform!

We hall defend key existing nationalised industries, even as we refuse to countenance the nationalisation of further firms. Likewise, we shall not falter in our defence of all aspects of the welfare state that provide the population with essential services and a fairer society. However, the Liberal Party will not challenge the privatisation of the steel industry and is open to the introduction of limited or complete privatisation in the most inefficient, non-essential, state owned industries.

We support a Land Value Tax that shall facilitate a lower level of income tax – giving our people higher incomes and promoting economic growth!

We call for reform of the Conservative Party’s anti-immigration legislation to allow for a larger number of migrants to enter the country. Tory populism on the issue of immigration gravely harms the British economy and our society. Only the Liberal Party stands in defence of a multicultural and prosperous society!

The Liberal Party continues to commit itself to promoting greater autonomy for the localities – calling for regional assemblies across England to complement those in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland as well as greater powers for local governments. We promote the devolution of further powers to the Welsh and Scottish Parliaments. We must continue to move towards a fully federalised Britain. Only the Liberals represent the unique interests of the constituent peoples of the British Isles!

Likewise, the Liberal Party continues to support greater levels of investment in rural communities and encourages people to resettle in the countryside from crowded urban sprawls.

The Liberal Party supports a smaller military with the most modern equipment and the best training. We therefore advocate further reductions in the absolute size of our armed forces – yet an increase it their quality.

The Liberal Party supports an agreement in Northern Ireland that shall promote electoral reform, to better represent the population in the province, dissolve many of the institutions associated with Stormont’s sectarian rule and replace them with non-sectarian organs, allow for equal civil rights amongst all citizens and secure a peaceful arrangement in the Six Counties.

The Liberal Party shall not rest until the terrorists of the ‘People’s Army’ are defeated once and for all!

Only the Liberal Party can defeat the Tories and promote a democratic future in Britain!

Liberal Party (Broad Party)
- Opposition Faction

Political Position: Centre / Centre-Left

Ideology: Social Democracy, Social Liberalism

Description:

The ‘Broad Party’ opposition within the Liberal Party fought defiantly against the efforts of Thorpe’s Yellows to secure some sense of ideological cohesiveness over the party. Instead, the oppositionists called for a looser formation taking inspiration from older ‘Orange’ currents, non-conformist Social Liberals and even young radicals within the party. The Broad Party advocates saw the Liberals as a ‘big tent’ party capable of amassing a wide variety of progressive opinion and unifying the democratic Left behind a single, Liberal led, banner.

Party Leader: Jeremy Thorpe

Faction Leader: Roy Jenkins

Roy Jenkins entered the Liberal Party during the 1950s, alienated by Labour’s radicalism he gravitated towards the Oranges. During the 1960s he worked his way up the ranks of the party, serving as a minor cabinet minister from 1962-63 and 1964-67 before becoming Foreign Secretary from 1967-69. A moderate Centre-Leftist at heart, Jenkins fought against Thorpe in the 1969 Liberal leadership contest and refused to lay down arms even after defeat. Through the early 1970s he and his followers fought viciously for against the attempts of the Yellow leadership to weaken oppositional forces within the party. By 1974 Jenkins and his allies remained within the Liberal Party, but appeared very close to a split.

Foreign Policy:

We strongly support Britain’s position within the NATO alliance, and the wider struggle against Communist totalitarianism around the world.

Liberals support arbitration, the United Nations and the international law in all international disputes. In the nuclear age it is imperative that nations solve their differences through peace, not military means.

However, where arbitration proves impossible, the Liberal Party is not opposed to the limited use of force in the interests of Great Britain and her citizens.

We support the strengthening of economic and political ties with the nations of the Commonwealth.

We strongly support Britain’s entry into the EEC. Entrance into the European Economic Community shall be a boon to the British economy and allow for a stronger, more prosperous Europe to flourish! The advantages are boundless!

We condemn the Republic of South Africa and the illegal regime in South Rhodesia unreservedly. Britain shall refuse to have any diplomatic relations with the illegal state in South Rhodesia and must build international support for sanctions against both South Africa and the South Rhodesian state.

Domestic Policy:

The Liberal Party during its golden era was an institution that welcomed every manner of progressive opinion, today our present leaders attempt to strangle independent thought. We aim to restore the broad Liberal Party of old – bringing Liberals closer our allies on the Left. We support cooperation between the Liberal Party and the moderately led Labour Party; we support a unified government of all democratic and progressive forces against the destructive rule of the Conservative Party!

Liberals must fight to defend the existing nationalised industries and the welfare state. We should aim to increase social spending and levels of investment, but within the means affordable to the country. We must prioritise the restoration of full employment. The Liberals support a more equitable and prosperous nation! The slash and burn tactics of the Tories must be brought to an end.

We support electoral reform – seeking a new electoral system based upon proportional representation that will better represent the democratic opinion of the British people.

We support the devolving of greater powers to the Scottish and Welsh Parliaments. We support devolved assemblies in Cornwall and Greater London – yet assemblies must be limited to those areas in which there is a popular demand for them.

We support a smaller military with the most modern equipment and the best training. We therefore advocate further reductions in the absolute size of our armed forces – yet an increase it their quality.

Political violence has no place in a civilised society – the criminals responsible for the actions of so called ‘People’s Army’ terrorist group must be brought to justice immediately and their reign of terror over British citizens brought to an end.

A regenerated and democratic Liberal Party shall bring about a regenerated and democratic Britain!

National Front

Political Position: Far Right

Ideology: Neo-Fascism, White Nationalism

Description:

The National Front was formed in 1967 as a number of Neo-Nazi and Neo Fascist groups and individuals came together with extremist elements from the Conservative Party (mostly coming from the ‘League of Empire Loyalists’ pressure group) that were alienated by Enoch Powell’s moderate turn. Coming to the fore in the early 1970s by tapping into right wing dissatisfaction with Powell’s government, the National Front had rapidly evolved from a coalition of street thugs into a powerful political movement with reach across the country. Despite playing down its Neo-Fascist ideological roots, the National Front’s origins are well known across the country.

Party Leader: John Tyndall

Prior to joining the National Front in 1967, Tyndall had been involved in a large number of openly Neo-Nazi organisation and contributed to Neo-Fascist theory. He didn’t become leader of the party until 1971, overseeing its rapid expansion into the national force it was by the elections of 1974. Despite his extremist background, Tyndall was eager to expand the National Front into a force capable of having a serious impact upon British politics – he had made notable attempts to crack down upon violence perpetrated by rank and file members whilst taking steps to avoid Nazi imagery at NF events and marches.

Foreign Policy:

Britain must maintain a strong and independent foreign policy.

The National Front calls for the immediate withdrawal of the United Kingdom the American controlled NATO alliance – Britain is no one’s slave!

However, we must remain at the forefront of the international fight against Communism. We advocate the direct involvement of ground troops in the conflict in Malaysia.

Britain must be willing to protect every inch of British clay and stand against any state that threatens her interests around the world.

The National Front totally opposes any British entry into the EEC.

The National Front advocates a foreign policy based neither on subservience to Washington nor to the Germans and their EEC. Instead we must base our foreign policy around close cooperation with the White Dominions and alliance with the other states within the British Commonwealth. To these ends the treatment of Rhodesia and South Africa by British governments over the past decade and a half has been an abomination. The National Front calls for the immediate restoration of strong ties with these states and their invitation to re-enter the Commonwealth.

We also advocate close relations with the Portuguese – protecting their colonial interests in Southern Africa from Communist subversion. Their interests are closely aligned with our own.

Domestic Policy:

The National Front demands the regeneration of the British nation; let us forge ahead into a new world and a bright future!

We call for the protection of all existing nationalised industries and the welfare state. Britain must maintain a cohesive nation in which workers are not ignored by their government.

The National Front calls for the illegalisation of the Communist Party and laws that limit the ability of the Communist trade unionists to hold the country to ransom.

Instead of the present conflict ridden system, the National Front calls for the state to play an arbitrary role between managers and employers and workers. This would bring an end to the destructive industrial conflicts of the past years whilst ensuring a fair deal for workers.

The National Front advocates a total ban on any further non-White immigration into Britain, and the launching of a phased plan of repatriation for all coloured immigrants.

This is the central plank of the National Front’s agenda. 1,000,000 immigrants, 1,000,000 unemployed – the Front calls for British jobs for British workers. Each year the Tories allow 150,000 more immigrants into this country, each year they place another 150,000 British workers on the dole queue, another 150,000 foreign thieves and criminals on the streets. Coloured immigration leads directly to crime, unemployment, housing shortages, violence, lower wages and the dilution of the integrity of the white British nation. No longer!

The National Front calls for the restoration of capital punishment and a tougher system of justice that will discourage crime.

In our battle against the terrorists of the People’s Army we call for the execution of all terrorists who are seized by our brave security personnel.

Likewise, in Northern Ireland, the National Front stands side by side with the Loyalists and British military forces in their war against separatism. We support the extension of our policy for immediate execution of People’s Army terrorists to the members of the IRA.

We call for a substantial increase in military spending and the restoration of two-year conscription to the armed forces.

The National Front is a party of democracy and freedom of speech. Without exception we uphold British citizens’ rights to these freedoms. To this end we call for the removal of all legislation supposedly aimed at illegalising ‘discrimination’ but in practise tampering with freedom of speech.

We must secure the existence of our people and a future for white children. Only the National Front can achieve this!

Election up!

The Liberals become the first party to have a second factional struggle (congratulations Liberals!), as they look to hold themselves together and knock the Tories out of government. The Conservatives are trying to stay in office, the National Front break into parliament, the Communists keep control of their usual block of voters and Labour look to continue their progress from the past decade and a half by beating the Tories and establishing a Labour (or at least Labour led) administration.

Exciting times, now get to the polls!

How do you know Labour will beat Tories?

Huh?

Was it my post? :p Missed out the important words ''look to'' :p, did change the meaning a lot ...

Well, it seems that Norsef... National Front is everything that I had hoped for and then some. This probably means a terrible electoral defeat as everything I love always seems to find a flaming death in a few years.

CPGB.

Some of the older National Fronters would have known Mosley personally, some even being involved in the British Union of Fascists back in the 1930s. Had a suspicion they would pique your interests :p.

Understood it was something like that, was mostly joking :)

But difficult choices. Really need to think over who to vote for now :p

Only horrific mistake I noticed. :p

I probably won't be able to convince you to vote for NF, right? We could... Ban commies? Would that work for you? No? Dammit.

Are you going to delay that horrible flaming death, or are you going to sell your vote for a drag queen?

CPGB.
>"The National Front is a party of democracy and freedom of speech."
>"The National Front calls for the illegalisation of the Communist Party"

It's the nat-libs all over again. :p

Fixed.

Thanks for pointing it out.

Woldn't do for a Brit, not to know the spelling of queue.

I have a difficult choice here - on the one hand, I support the principle of a broad party unequivocally but on the other hand only the yellow tendency has the radical and totemic Liberal policies necessary to build a better Britain while the broad party tendency has no new or innovative policies of its own.

Therefore, I will vote Liberal (Yellow) in this election for the sake of the independence of the Liberal party and its policies but I will also hope that the leadership takes a reconciliatory approach to different viewpoints within the party,

After the first three votes the Liberals are on course to win a massive majority in parliament - what a glorious comeback!

(Yes, my delight in wildly extrapolating from tiny samples continues)

The non-distortionary economics behind Land Value Tax are well known and well established by far superior economic minds to ours. I suggest you look it up if you're not familiar with it.

To quote Adam Smith:

"Ground-rents are a still more proper subject of taxation than the rent of houses. A tax upon ground-rents would not raise the rents of houses. It would fall altogether upon the owner of the ground-rent, who acts always as a monopolist, and exacts the greatest rent which can be got for the use of his ground. More or less can be got for it according as the competitors happen to be richer or poorer, or can afford to gratify their fancy for a particular spot of ground at a greater or smaller expense. In every country the greatest number of rich competitors is in the capital, and it is there accordingly that the highest ground-rents are always to be found. As the wealth of those competitors would in no respect be increased by a tax upon ground-rents, they would not probably be disposed to pay more for the use of the ground. Whether the tax was to be advanced by the inhabitant, or by the owner of the ground, would be of little importance. The more the inhabitant was obliged to pay for the tax, the less he would incline to pay for the ground; so that the final payment of the tax would fall altogether upon the owner of the ground-rent."

And, if you continue to disagree with perfectly valid economic theory, then just look at the existing practical implementation of LVT without the effects you mentioned in parts of the United States and in Denmark.

First of all, not all land is productive. Nor can all land be expected to stay productive. Take for example an isle of the cost of Scotland, maybe a few hectares of rock and some plants. Zero production, zero profit; yet you would still want to tax it?

The land is simply another form of capital, a requirement for the production of some good. The more you tax the capital required for production of goods and services, the less goods will be produced, which results in overall welfare losses for everyone. Making production of goods in state A, but not in state B, makes it cheaper to produce goods in state B, ceteris paribus.
Land is simply a special form of capital, it cannot be transferred.

Same applies to cities, if one city increases land tax, but other one does not; there will be a outflow from the more expensive city to the more cheaper city, people, companies etc all want the cheaper choice, all other things being unchanged.
The market is distorted.

Since you cannot control the global land value tax, you will simply make Britain economic situation more worse in relation to other countries with no such taxes.

Of course I disagree with such a retarded 'economic theory'. Whilst Adam Smith promoted many good ideas, he was not always 100% right.

Again I state, the land itself has no value. The value appears once the land in question becomes a scarce good with demand above supply. They meet in the equilibrium, which is in constant change. The market aims for the greatest efficiency, but it is know taxes and other forms of government push the markets towards always some other direction, away from the natural state of equilibrium.
The land value tax will have the same results.
If äsuperior minds' claim otherwise, one can start wondering who claims that these minds are truly superior? :p

Just because someone gave a Keynesian troll a degree in economics does not mean everything he says will be the right answer...
