It is allowed to dream a little bit ;) So join the dreaming for two seconds.

I think the Hon. Member dreams a little too often for her own good. :)

I think that if we can establish a free trade area which includes the dominions then we'll have broken the barriers of protectionism and the rest should follow logically in time. Do not forget that the Dominions do want further immigration - perhaps we could focus on the white dominions first (or rather avoid India and Pakistan) in order to reduce fears of the "wrong kind" of immigration to the Dominions.

This is why it is so important to get the Dominions onside. If we can get a minimum of Canada, Australia and New Zealand on board, perhaps India and the Pakistans too if we're lucky, then the rest of the Commonwealth will fall into place.

That is why I mentioned "industrialized members" a prettier word and more politcal correct than saying "the white colonies" ;)

These are imo the nations we should focus on in the start. Later on we can expand it to the other former colonies. Also if we give our current colonies home rule we can automatically include them in the free trade area. Thus expanding the area and hipefully they'll keep being part of our free trade zone.

However do you think it is possibru to be part of both the CEA and EEC?

This is 1963. I don't think political correctness exists yet.

Well I guess it is easier for the libeals and labours to agree on if we say "industrialized members" rather than "the white members".

Ah 1963, soon feminism may once more become an issue :p

Well, certainly not in Wolverhampton, no.

Some research tells me the term actually has its origins in the socialist/communist movement during the mid 20th century, so it might well exist in Wolverhampton – though admittedly with a different meaning.

Bah, you are advocating neoimperialism!
All provinces of the Empire are equal and deserve equal rights and presentation in the parliament of the commonwealth!
Humans are all equal in front of the law, whether they live in the jungles of Sokoto or on the isles of Britain!

In real life Eden spoke of something called the "three circles" of British foreign policy: The Atlantic Alliance with America, (or NATO, if you will) the Commonwealth, and Europe (or the nascent Common Market, if you will) being those three circles. Picture a venn diagram if you will, with Britain in the centre of those three circles, and you have your average One Nation Tory's view on foreign policy. :)

Depend if it is possible. Depend if NATO and USA want UK to have their own bloc. At the same time it depend if EEC and France would like UK to have it's own market too.

Well it is no parliament of the commonwealth. Do you expect every nation, white, brown, black or yellow, to accept such a political union? No they won't. Therefore we need to slowly integrate our nations political and economical ties. One small step at the time.

When did it stop being an issue? :p

Never for me ;) But as we've seen most are rather negative to it. But we don't need to discuss this, I know what it will lead to.

Honestly, America would be totally cool with the Commonwealth Union provided we and it remain anti-communist. Hell, America would do just about anything to prop up such a venture if it meant "outsourcing" the fight against Communism to Britain, and keeping us "East of Suez" so to speak. France of course, is a totally different matter.

Explain why they were so uncool with the Nordic countries forming an alliance then. A Commonwealth alliance would be much stronger.

The UK will never be in a free trade bloc with the USA and Canada already has a free trade treaty with the USA. If the CEA comes into being then there is no reason why the UK cannot agree a free trade deal with the European Common Market in addition to being the engine of the CEA.

Because a Nordic Alliance (OTL) was suggested as a way to stay out of either the NATO or the Soviet camp - but the Commonwealth is already firmly in the NATO camp.

Free trade for everyone!
Watch the profits soar, the citizens rejoice!
Let freedom of the individual prevail!

Barriers of trade only exist to help inefficient local powerful groups from foreign competition.
Firms face competition only when they cannot get rid of it.
