You know that they based their entire economy around debt? All they did was loans and credits. And their way if thinking was "we will be at war with these countries soon, so it is no need for us to pay it back". Also they used forced labor and relied on donations from nazi sympathisers in the west. Most importantly their entire economy was geared towards war - which is not a substaineble economy. But USSR also had sinilar policies, and that lead to mass poverty and starvation.

Didn't you just say to war by jingo? And if the both USA and USSR threatened the Nordic with war if they united, why should they leave us alone when we are neutral and go around waging war?
Realpolitik demand that we should lead to either of these sides if we want to be independent - and especially if we're gonna have an aggressive foreign policy. But again you have not lived in the real world for a long time.
They prevented a pan-cultural movement for no good reason other than not having a split nordic and USA wanted them in NATO. Why should they then allow us to wage war and build and maintain an empire when we're friends with neither? One or bith of them will take advantage of that to enlargen their influence.
Did you know that people choose to trade goods and services only when both sides stand to gain benefit from the trade?
Trade and division of labour are one the greatest factors that have allowed our civilizations to prosper.
Autarky is such a retarded concept that people promoting it should be thrown into a madhouse and locked up there. Even socialist thought I can understand, and why people would want socialism. Autarky has never existed for a group larger than one isolated family.

My prediction is that the Conservatives will attempt to form a government with the NLP and UUP. However, us Liberals need only wait for the NLP to be torn apart between merger with the Tories and independence and we will be left as the largest party - at which point we might deign to permit the Conservatives or Labour to join us as junior coalition partners provided they agree to ditch those of their policies which are silly in favour of a good solid slice of New Liberalism.
They'll probably choose Tories, really. I think most see Labour as too radical as for now.
England need not make herself beholden to the so called "superpowers"; I think the people underestimate our great country, as we can most definitely contest for the position of superpower ourselves! The Commonwealth combined is every bit as capable of standing up to the damn Yanks as it is to the bleeding Soviets and every bit as capable of coming out on top in any struggle; we need not cause another World War holding the Empire in place, as the Soviets and Americans will be far too busy opposing one another in Germany, China, and the former colonies of lesser Continental powers.

Or when they are coerced through economic and social pressures. I may not wish to wear a suit, however it is a condition imposed by my place of work (parliament) that I wear one even though it serves no practical purpose. Furthermore, I may not wish to wear clothes at all however social pressures necessitate that I do so in public.
Well compare our nuclear arsenal to the American for starters. Then the share armed forces of both USA and USSR and their allies to us. It would be a war between British Empire and against USA and western europe or USSR, China and eastern and central Europe. Even our great Empire would never manage to do that. Unless we re-arm of course and have an extensive nuclear program.
