Because he is poor. Having a steady job means that one bank is willing to loan him money in order to reap in the interest payments. The best way to make money is off the back of the working poor, paying down cents of the actual debt to hundreds on the interest. Basically, I want to be old enough to pass as a politician in the 60s-70s and yet young enough to fully enjoy the New Romantics when they become a thing in the early 80s. One could hardly imagine someone of say, Jenkins or Powell's age with awesome hair and man-makeup dancing in some fancy club or discotheque.

The equilibrium between power of the larger party and concessions to the smaller ones is hard to find, and I don't think the current Liberal leadership is doing it well. If we're a junior partner, we can't entirely push our ideas, it's democracy after all, not some minority parties' dictatorship.
