I hadn't had the event chain for the War in Heaven fire since just after it became an option oh so many patches ago, but it popped up out of the blue in my most recent game. Being surrounded by a devouring swarm on one side and fanatical purifiers on the other, a xenophilic fallen empire roused itself, followed by a xenophobic one. The Grey Tempest emerged from the L-cluster, and then the War in Heaven began.
I was pretty powerful by that point, having used edicts and tombworld habitability to build tall, and went for the independent league. I figured that I'd build up some major fleets as well as a federation armada while I fought to contain the Grey Tempest.
Then I got the notification that a colossus had been used.
The galaxy is a patchwork mess of tangled alliances. From seclusion in the L-cluster, I finish off the tempest and prepare a sentry array to coordinate fleet movements to snipe awakened empire fleets as they branch off. Both awakened empires begin massive gateway construction projects to link their empires together, which means I have to launch desperate suicide missions with jump-drive equipped corvette squadrons to sabatoge their efforts less they be able to tie the galaxy together. Several fortress worlds on the border are blown away or shielded up as the awakened empires advance, and the outer rim of the galaxy becomes a free-for-all as vassals and independents fight one another while the fallen empires race towards each other, and cut through the independent states which separate them (i.e. me). I sell research and migration treaties to the whole faction, hoping to spread out the jump drive tech and grab as much pop growth to fuel a total war economy and absorb the inevitable losses.
The marketplace collapses into anarchy and chaos as shortages run wild. A single unit of 25 alloys costs more than 2,000 credits at the height of the inflation, and strategic resources run dry the galaxy over. Consumer goods vanish almost overnight. Marauders see their chance and run rampant throughout the unprotected flanks of several signatory and thrall empires. For fifty years the galaxy knows only death and chaos. My empire becomes a totalitarian state trying to clamp down on rampant unrest. My fleets burn to buy my former rivals turned league allies time to evacuate through relocation efforts. A barbaric despoiler fleet in thrall to the xenophobes jump drives into unprotected systems to abduct pops. As the enemy advances, my people appear on the slave market en masse. Admirals and generals of my race, migrants to other empires from a time before the war, face against my forces in engagement after engagement. The independents withdraw to the L-cluster, which forms the backbone of resistance.
The dust clears with both awakened empires crushed in surprise assaults from the L-gates, jumping in and planting massive armies down on each of their homeworlds. Despite 8:1 numerical odds, each battle lasts at least 2 years. The war ends for the independents with both awakened empires crushed and a white peace with the survivors of each faction who continue their war with one another for another seventy years.
Five years after the war ends, the independents are busy sorting out who controls what, trading territory taken in the war and rebuilding the galactic market piece by piece.
And then the unbidden, presumably drawn in by the proliferation of jump drive technology during the war, invade and the galaxy collapses again.
TL;DR: 15/10 best game
