An Open Letter to the People of Eutopia

My Fellow Eutopians,

Today we stand feet firmly planted upon a road which leads towards a bright and shining future. One which promises prosperity, peace, and security for you and your families. But .. this promise is only offered where the government which you, the people of Eutopia, have duly elected, is given the mandate to rule effectively, and the pressure upon it to pursue those issues which are crucial to the further our fledgling democracy.

There have already been some less-than-complimentary comments bandied about in certain circles. Words of blind hurt and disappointment which are, on one hand, understandable after any election, but on the other utterly unacceptable from political and public figures. Regardless of party affiliation and stance on certain issues, we are all of us, ultimately, citizens of Eutopia, and our fortunes tied inextricably to each other. Rally for Democracy, Liberal Democrats, Free Republicans, Monarchists, Anti-Monarchists, the specifics boil down to a common desire for the liberty and happiness of our country.

I would exhort all of us, as we embark upon this journey of democratic governance, to keep that in mind, and when we feel that a castigation of a colleague and fellow citizen is in order, that it be tempered by that recognition of someone who, despite opposition on various issues, nonetheless has the same core, democratic value within their own heart as we have in ours. It is my sincere hope that this government will, amongst other precedents which it will doubtless set, affect a tone of a willigness to examine those things which set us apart in a way which will affirm the values which tie us together.

That being said, I think we have already seen a promising start. Our new President is a man known for his cordiality and approachability, as well as for his political acumen. The same may be said of the man who stands to take the helm of the Parliament, the sole nomination for Speaker, as yet: Mr. Galloglaigh. It is my firm opinion that there is not another man, empowered by due election, to sit within that august body, more capable than my colleague. What arguments are bound to arise both in Parliament and in the presidential Cabinet will doubtless be tempered by these most compassionate and canny of men, and one in whom you and I may place our absolute trust.

And so, my fellow citizens of Eutopia, let us walk, together, into this future which awaits us all, armed with our personal beliefs and convictions, yes, but also with a recognition of our fellow men in both the natural dignity afforded them by God, and in that of democracy, in which we are all of us eligible for election to the offices which you have so recently conferred upon myself and others.

It is a brilliant dawn rising; a sun which we may hope will set upon a Eutopia infinitely better for the choices it has made.

Honeymoon? What Honeymoon?

In a shockingly display of media bias, the ETN has already started pounding the impeachment drums. Talks have been ongoing to formalize the coalition, Speaker nominations had to be completed, and the RD had to formalize its request for what Ministerial seats it actually wanted. Also this is a holiday season, and people can be excused for wanting to spend that time with their own. Obviously there is a great deal of State business to look ahead to. But the Government is ready to undertake it, the Speaker has opened Parliament's session, and the President and RD have agreed on the ministerial posts to be held by our coalition partners.

We look forward to a successful government that brings prosperity and peace to our people. To them we also wish a Merry Christmas. The Speaker will be present daily to conduct Parliamentary business.

Wanting it both ways.

It seems certain members of the LD have just discovered what the term "Opposition" means. The FR and the RD have begun the formation of a Steering Committee to aid in the promotion of legislation from the Governing coalition. The LD party, after having been offered coalition opportunities on multiple occasions from the FR, and, according to RD leadership, their party as well specifically said they desired to wait until "after the elections" before talking with anyone. This despite being told by the FR party leadership that we would not sit still and wait for a split Parliament. We were specifically told at that point that the LD would be content in opposition.

Now, after rebuffing all these coalition offers, knowing that we were talking with the RD regarding a governing coalition, a member of the LD has started complaining about being excluded from a Steering Committee that is specifically meant to guide legislation for the GOVERNMENT, which the LD is NOT.

The LD member then said that any party could open coalition discussions whenever they wished at LD party HQ. Well, we had already tried this. And if this was meant to mean "any RD party," then this member needs to learn electoral rules. The victorious party in elections always receives the first opportunity to form a governing coalition. The LD is not in a position to dictate to the other parties in Parliament who can and cannot be in a governing coalition, as they were soundly trounced.

The bottom line is that the LD was not willing to negotiate or show the ability to compromise prior to the election, and now they are in the Opposition. That is the nature of politics. We only hope that in the future they take more interest in the Democratic process they claim to support.

The State of EUtopia, 2003.

With the new government taking shape, though slowly due to the holiday break, it behooves us to examine this year. We have seen the tragic death of Prince Drakken, and another candidate flee the country. We have seen a Constitutional crisis that precipitated a complete reorganization of EUtopian politics, the collapse of the center in EUtopian politics that led to the seeming Weimar-like extremist politics of the era that ended with the Constitutional crisis, and the rebirth of the center-right in the Free Republican movement., that rebirth marked by the stunning electoral sweep of the recent polls that brought about the current coalition.

By all accounts, it has been a year filled with change. And those changes don't seem to be done, as several political parties have arisen in the weeks since the election as well. This may force both parties of the governing coalition to examine how they work together carefully. Will they decide they make a permanent power-sharing agreement, or is this a one-off coalition that will end with both partners appealing to the wings of either side of the spectrum? Only time will tell. These weeks following the New Year will be crucial in that decision making process. The Steering Committee formed will go a long ways in determining exactly how viable the coalition is. Mr Galloglaigh will seemingly be juggling duties as Party Leader, MP, Speaker, and a member of the Steering Committee. Can he perform all those duties effectively and keep together the fragile bonds he has made in the opposite party while keeping his own party loyal. Much of his credibility will be staked on this delicate balance.

For President Jacob-Lundgren, the duties are no less daunting. As EUtopia's first elected President, he must operate a freely-elected independant Executive branch for the first time in our history. Splitting the 4 cabinet posts between representatives of each parties' interests means that he too will have to perform the delicate high-wire act of liason between the coalition members. So far his strategy has seemed to be to fly under the radar. Laudable enough, as it allows few negatives to be sent your way. But when governing, that option is gone. For better or worse, he will now have to take the slings and arrows that come with high office.

What does this bode for the future? We cannot know for sure. But we hope that this means that regardless of the certainty that the year will not be without controversy, we might have more stability than the past. For without stability we cannot have the peace and prosperity we all desire.

Happy New Year to All EUtopians!

POSSIBLE SOCIALIST UPRISING???

It is a sad thing that i begin my writing career on. apperently the minister of defense has began to be target by the socialist party. citing insults against people on welfare they began a caimpaign to get him removed from office. shortly later he issued a report about possible socialist revolution on the horizon. there is rumour that the socialist party might begin protesting the minister and possible more in the future. is EUtopia headed for massed crisis or will the next few days settle things down and tranquelity preval? While only time will tell, I feel a little un-easy knowing one of the major parties of Eutopia supports possible revolution.
God Bless EUtopia.

EXTRA EXTRA
As the minister of defense continues his investigation the socialist leader has decided to slander Me. As the former President of EUtopia and contributing Editor to this paper it is alarming that the left would slander a step-down for medical reasons and blame it on running off during hard times. As the current situation is apperently deginerating swiftly it seems ill-timed to slander the Former and First democraticaly elected President of this Great nation. Rmours of infilitration abound that the defense ministry has stealthed its way into the socialists mustering for Strike. I plan to use my position here in the Voice of The Republic to help further the cause of EUtopia and spread the truth.
God Bless

Elections near
Well elections are begining to near. Soon it will be time to get out and vote again. Also it appears the New Nationalist party is having quite the loud voice for a smaller party. Already they have scored victories for the right by trying to spread knowledge of its ideas. A RD rally was broken up apperently over "fears" from 1 low flying aircraft. Talk of possible alliances have begun to pop up in a few parties and its possibly however unlikely at this late stage that a right-alliance will be formed to run in the coming election. It is uncertan how, many parties plan to handle the election but with the near disappearance of the FR as a power before a slight rebound and the slight weakening of the RD that it might quite be the election of equals with many groups to vote on.

Editorial

Fringe leftist loonies confirm they are fringe leftist loonies.

I wish to send my congratulations to the editor of the "Eutopian Worker" or something like that. One of their newest article states that the recent assasination attempt on my life (which resulted in the brutal murder of my bodyguard and driver) was part of a devious plot started up in the Vast Right Wing Conspiracy HQ in Eutopia City. Namely, the editor claims that it was all a pretext to begin a anti left campaign. Additionaly, he also points out to the working (at least they're not on welfare) men and women of Eutopia that a mere two days after all these happenings a 'fringe rightist party' (the Nationalist Party, which I deem as an interesting and worthwile party) is formed to harness all the potential popularity of the vast anti left paranoia.

And they say I'm crazy.

new politcal alliance?
It appears the future of EUtopia might very well rest in the hands of a group that 2 weeks ago was barely an idea in the corners of a few peoples minds. The conservative alliance is taking shape and will consist of the FR Libertarians and the national party. It is hoped by the marging groups to create a right counter weight to the Rd and socialists. The socialists have found themselves in a near perfect situation to gain massive power for their party by handing the presidency to the RD as some would hope. Well this citizen hopes that shall never come to fact as government that owes its winning to socialists would NOT go well for this countries future. Socialism might sound good but just doesnt work in practice. According to their theory all people would have a job and no social elite would rule and it would be a workers paradise. While that sounds good to some in reality it dont work that way. This is the begining of a mini-series of articles annalyzing socialism and the dangers it can hold for EUtopia.
On side news the defense minister held a fairly successful military training exercise. While showing that our armed forces need reform to stay effective it did provide useful training to key military personnel.
