THE STORY OF VINLAND

Originally written in Icelandic (Old Norse) in the fifthteenth century A.D., by an unknown hand. However, most of the material is based substantially on legends and stories handed down some centuries later, finally compiled by the under-paid and over-worked vinlander scholar "Languish".

Note

This is the start of the first AAR for the Vinland Fantasy Scenario that i've been working closely on with Krunch, Harvard and many other excellent contributors.

It will, by its nature, be slow paced and somewhat story driven. This is perfect to allow me write each exploit in the game as an independant saga representing the whole story that is vinland. Forgive any naming transgressions, or inconsistencies. Correct me as required. I hope this works out well and becomes an enjoyable read.

CHAPTER I
Geir av Garpaslodhum Travels South

Geir av Garpaslodhum, at the behest of Bjorn, prepared to make this voyage from Vinland with forty men. They put their three ships in order, and sailed out to sea. Geir set out towards the south with the three ships, and along the western coast. After passing the familiar lands of the micmac skraelings the ships ventured south further still. The last journeys to these lands were known about and Geir knew were to go.

They found the lands to be not all that different to vinland itself. Geir was greatly pleased by this. "This land is fair, ... and like our own. It is strange that no other skraelings live in these lands." In one more impressive inlet a few days later they laid up their ship, and put out the gangway to the land. Geir and his companions went ashore. They found no trace of any Skraelings and so they turned back to the ship. Geir said that they should put their ship in order, and that they should continue, proceeding along the western coast, and explore thereabouts during what remained of the summer. They found the lands as they travelled south to be fair, well-wooded lands. There were a great number of islands and shallows.

They laid up their ship on this coast, and remained there quietly for a few weeks, resupplying themselves with food by fishing and hunting. shortly afterwards however, Geir said that they should put their ship in order, and that they should continue, and proceed along the western coast. Which they did. Several men remained at this coastline where they began the construction of some small lodges. The first of many settlements to come.

Passing by the great bay they came through last summer they were suprised to see several skin canoes each crewed by skraeling who did not appear to be micmac. Geir, known for his blunt arrogance seized several of the skraeling during a parley. They killed the captured skraeling, and then followed after those skraeling who had fled. Landing ashore Geir led his companions towards a nearby settlement. This was the first encounter with those skraeling now identified as Narrangasett. Upon their arrival the skraeling gave great cheer and ran down towards them. Fearing an attack the vinlanders slew several of the skraeling as they approached, and fled before any counter could be given. Despite them coming out to sea in their canoes, they could do little against the strongly built longships. After some brief skirmishes and several of the skraeling being sent flying into the waters of the bay they gave up and returned to their dwellings. Geir had however been badly injured in the fray, his companions offered what help the could, and the ships were hurredly sent northwards. They decided against returning to vinland, and arrived with their ship in the newly settled southern coast, where they were able to recount great stories to the men awaiting them. By the time they arrived Geir had long since died of his injury.

Funny, I was just looking over that scenario today. :)

Nice start, I like the mix of gameplay and storytelling. Take your time.
