Took advantage of the sale and purchased El Dorado and a couple of other DLC.

Main reason was to create a Pontic Greek, Buddhist, Bactria around where Afghanistan is. But that's not the subject of this thread.

Created a 100pt Vinland in Labrador, Greenland and around the Gulf of St Lawrence. Opted to remain Norse Pagan rather than Christian. Game proceeding okay, though not much happening. However slightly alarmed that my start map was all of North America and Central America almost down to Panama.

Certainly haven't felt any need to choose Exploration as one of my first three ideas groups . . .

I went for Western on the basis they'd have some diplomatic, trade and ethnic ties to old Scandinavia. I'll repeat the experiment as a different tech group.

I did something similar when doing my vinland run. It's quite fun.

Because this is attempt number two; Christian Vinland.

Pagan Vinland was overrun by the British from their colonies on the St Lawrence.

This Vinland was under threat from the Dutch who had settled the St Lawrence. When war came they were like 8 tech levels ahead, the penalty for being so far from Europe is a killer . . .

Third run as a custom Vinland; Nordic, Catholic, this time Eastern.

Still get map of all North and Central America. Norway plants colonies in the St Lawrence; also called Vinland when it matures to five provinces. "There can be only one!" Vinland conquers Vinland! Catching up and moving into 'age of global trade'.

Then Leinster settles colonies in Labrador and far NE Canadian coast, and they have a network of alliance with half of Europe . . .

Trade territory for time and try to survive . . .

You might want to try out a mod called "third odyssey: back to the motherland" it's mostly about the Byzantines fleeing to the new world, but also has playable norse colonies which can unite into Vinland. Along with many cool events.

When I did this I created like 10 different nations with their own unique idea sets, the idea being a balkanized Vinland that I'd have to unite over time. Also put a colonist in my idea set. Gave me something to do whilst waiting for England to show up.

Trade territory for time and try to survive . . .
Then Leinster's colony becomes an autonomous colony, without its parent's alliances and no peace treaty with me. I take back the provinces lost and two other provinces, restricting the new state to Hudson's Bay and the North East facing coast of mainland Newfoundland and Labrador. Surviving, its interesting, but the Dutch (Southern Atlantic States), Spanish Florida and the Portuguese settling up the Mississippi and the Ohio will constrain Vinland from any 'manifest destiny'.
