Turn Three
25th January – 12:45 PM
The Seventh was stranded in open fields, three metres north of the Company – and under heavy fire. As soon as it bunkered down, the referees had reported it was under fire, so the commanding Lieutenant urged his soldiers to sprint for the forest only one hundred metres away. They moved quickly away from the reported fire, and sustained only two wounded while moving into the forest.
The Seventh’s soldiers took a moment to catch their breath, while First and Fifth appeared from the brush before, with sub machine guns held at their side, put on a steady pace and crunched into the Eastern Forest, the crash of the Seventh to their north welcoming them to the rows of gum trees. It did not offer much cover, and were spread out so that most of the hundred advancing soldiers settled cautiously into the forest floor, the scouts at the front waving hands as small figures moved towards them. This was the OPFOR patrol, still making it’s way slowly down along the edge of the forest, and not paying attention to the unreported position of Seventh.
The Fifth swung their two M60 LMGs towards the OPFOR, while around twenty men found thick cover behind the gum tree trunks, where they peeked around for the approaching enemy.
Towards the grass at the south, the Sixth, Second and Third all moved to the northern edge of the reeds. While Seventh sprinted, guns crashing and hands on helmets, for the forest cover the Sixth was covering their backs with the M60s and forty eight other aimed Owen guns, but found that there was no one chasing the retreating Seventh.
The Second, to the right of the Sixth, had barely clipped through the hanging brush that the Lieutenant spotted a opening straight through to the enemy forest. With a swipe of his hand he ordered that heavy fire be concentrated there, but only the recon Owen guns could graze the front of this area. The Brigadier did report the enemy suppressed, and that fire had nearly stopped on the now covered Seventh.
The Third on the other edge waited while the Second laid down the light cover, and then ducked across the small gap of open space and burst into the gum forest.
Co-inciding with this leap, the OPFOR position near the Seventh jerked from its apathy and, in a alarmed fashion, swung up Owen guns and looked to the west. The Seventh, realizing it was discovered, promptly opened fire on this small patrol. With a range of only seventy metres between the two teams, the OPFOR lost five of their patrol, from fifteen. Alerted by a radio call from the Seventh, a Corporal in the Fifth warned of the battle and the M60s were ordered to chip away to their north. The OPFOR, reeling back from the slight ambush to their west, were now thumped from the south. They promptly collapsed back northwards and out of range.
To the south the other OPFOR patrol simply moved east towards the reeds, but wheeled off towards the Central Forest after ten minutes. The Fourth, in reaction, edged eastwards and crouched in as reserves and rear defence for the Company.
The Brigadier ordered that a round of tracers were fired over the battlefield.
The Moves
The First and Fifth togethered bounced over to the Eastern Forest. The restless soldiers entered silently, and found moderate cover within five minutes. Second, Third and Sixth all spread out along the southern reeds, giving appropriate covering fire to the allied formations. The Fourth rested to the south, warily keeping an eye on the OPFOR patrol while the Seventh made a desperate, successful dash into the Eastern Forest, where they were engaged soon after by a OPFOR patrol. The Fifth and Seventh resisted and pushed off this patrol, removing it from combat.
Two soldiers from the Seventh were wounded (one 'critical' one slightly) during their move, and one was critically wounded during the firefight with the patrol.
The Notes
To complete this Op, you need to get every platoon over the northern limit - or reached that point near the Western Forest.
The combination of light fire from the three platoons to the south and the quick retreat of the Seventh lessened this situation, and the actions of the Seventh and Fifth has averted a dangerous situation. The Company-level thinking has meant you defused this bomb.
The Company has suffered 11 WIA, so far.
The deadlines are within twelve hours.
