How many times have we seen this one - a little nation allied to a big one, like Austria or Spain joins in a war and does really well, grabbing a province or even two, maybe doubling its size.
The problem is, they've just given themselves a land border with their big partner which they didn't have before and before long, they become vassals and then are diplo-annexed. If they'd been pathetic cowards, they might have survived...
I'm seeing it now in my Granada game - Austria lost the Tyrol to Venice and little Mantua has now conquered it from Venice in alliance with Austria - No! Don't do it!

That's one of the times that the AI is really Intelligent on one side and dumb on the other side.

Life sucks when the AI is a minor, 95% of them suffer horrible deaths, only to spring back to life several times and die again every one of those times.

Well in a real war, a big power like Spain or Austria wouldnt really let Mantua or Bavaria or whatever get too bog for their boots in case they started to get naughty ideas, so its not too uinreasonable.
