You're Dutch? For some reason I thought you were American...
Yup. I lived in the US for 5 years doing my PhD, maybe my English reflects that?

So Hoer Verde was a settlement of Dutch prostitutes in Brazil. After the government wiped them out they covered the whole thing up and erased records of the place ever existing!

Or maybe it is all an urban legend.:D

I was surprised to see this thread revived after a year.

A settlement of Dutch speaking Surinamese prostitutes is more likely given the distance from Amsterdam and lack of economic benefits from relocating the busineds into Brasil.

Actually in the 19th century European prostitutes could and did relocate to Brazil because of economic opportunities there, just not to the countryside, but to major cities like Rio de Janeiro.

European in general for sure... however Dutch immigration to Brazil as far as I know was not really significant (since the Netherlands have enough colonies) so without a large Dutch speaking community I see no reason for en masse emigration of Dutch prostitutes to Brazil. ;)

True.

Dutch immigration was rare here, but there is one famous exception, the city of Holambra: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holambra

I have no actual information on this case. However, during the time period quite a few "utopian colonies" were founded by European socialists and others, in both North and South America. This had been preceded by religiously motivated utopianism. In 1920's, at least three such colonies were founded by Finnish settlers in South America: "Penedo" in Brazil, "Villa Alborada" in Paraguay and "Colonia Finlandesa" in Argentina. At least further three were founded in the Caribbean, and many others in North America, Russia/Soviet Union and Australia.

Many of the colonies/settlements were short lived, usually disbanding after a few years, due to arguments, poverty and general hardship.

Maybe the "Hoer Verde" (or whatever the real name was) was such a (Dutch?) colony, and the people just went back home?

"Penedo" in Brazil,

I have visited a couple of times, nice place!
