edit 25-12-2002: Ok, from now on this will be a general newspaper. News, editorials etc. for only 1 ducat. That is 0,95 cents but most newsdealers won't give you the change anyway. This is not yet a party newspaper but might become one in the future. We're talking about the Liberal Democracy here. Anyway LD members are free to post news or articles.

A New Beginning

After the elections both big parties were keen to point out that it was ultimately a success for them. However no signs of jubilation came from the headquarters of the Liberal Democracy Party. Let's face it the LD and sadly EUtopian Liberalism suffered a crushing defeat in this elections. Only a single MP and around 10% of the votes for the liberal party was worse than the most pessimistic expectation.

One is tempted to ask the question: Is there support for liberalism in EUtopia? Or is a Libertarian party on the one hand and liberal elements in the programmes of the big parties on the other enough?
The question is rhethorical of course.

Several voters felt uneasy about voting for a party who accepts capitalism "for the moment" or one that advocates choice with responsibility but mysteriously does not support the legalization of light-drugs. So why did these people did not vote for the LD? At the end you will not vote for the one who you agree with but the one who will make your ideas work. Apparently some voters thought it was a waste of their precious ballot to vote LD. Worse still they were probably right.

But as the dynamics of politics work LD the will represent EUtopian liberalism for a long time. If it fails the ideals of a strong commitment to Human and Civic Rights and the idea of a small and efficient state will fail too. It is time for those who thought the LD could not achieve these goals to come forward and help us. That or accept the "centrist" compromise on both social and economic issues and forget the liberal EUtopia forever.
