Hello everyone,

This is my first real AAR, since I do remember starting one a few years ago, but I never really got into it. I have read many good AARs here, very well written and with good and enjoyable story lines. I don’t think I can live up to some of the good writers here, but I will try my best to make this one interesting enough.

I have really enjoyed the Modern Day Scenario 2 (MDS2) and I have am writing this AAR as a tribute to the great work and effort that has been put into this mod.
(You can find out more here… )

I am playing the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland starting date March 2003.

CHAPTER 1: Introduction

Welcome to the United Kingdom! We’re a small nation, an island with natural defences better than those afforded most of Europe. We have access to the some of the best weapons and equipment in the world, a small yet experienced professional military, the Worlds 5th largest Navy and some of the best intelligence services in the developed world. We are one of the few nations in the World to have and maintain a nuclear deterrent. Of course we hope that this will never be used, however we should hope it will make someone think twice before attacking the home lands.

The UK in Europe: March 2003

govermentzi2.jpg

The British Goverment

Some extracts of an Interview with the PM and your favourite newspaper…

What are the immediate and future objectives of the United Kingdom?

To answer this question, the immediate objectives of the UK are to help our allies; the United-States win the War in Iraq. This war is rather unpopular at home, and with many nations in Europe, hurting British diplomatic relations with many states of Europe and countries of the world. However, we are hopping it shall send a clear message to the World that we will stand by and defend our allies and our principles.

The objectives of the UK in the near future are to re-establish ourselves as major industrial power in the world, and help to create free united Europe and to integrate the UK as much as possible in the EU however maintaining as much of our national sovereignty as possible by keeping British national and foreign policy in British Parliament.

You said about helping to “create a united Europe” how do you plan to do this and you also said “integrating the UK as much as possible” does the UK plans to adopt the Euro in the near future?

No, not if the general public doesn’t want to. The British Pound is still a major trading currency in the world, and we see no reason for changing our national currency, perhaps even a symbol of Britain’s sovereignty to the Euro. We will financially support the European Union, and work closely with EU member states with defence policies and counter terrorism, while at the same time trying to open our frontiers and make business and travel as easy and quick as possible.

How do you expect to achieve the UK’s industrial ambition? The UK doesn’t have the natural resources to achieve this, where and how do you expect you get the resources Britain will need?

We expect to slowly build Britain’s economy to match the other great industrial powers of the world. We will get the resources by exporting money and supplies, perhaps even oil in exchange for the resources we’ll need.

Who do you expect to be Britain’s major trading partner?

Hopefully Russia will be our major trading partner.

Changing to a more pressing topic, how do you plan to carry out the War in Iraq?

I plan to leave the battle strategy to the commanders on the ground, while making every effort to ensure that British Soldiers are equipped with some of the best kits in the world. As a matter of security and for the safety of our troops in the field, I cannot say anything more about that at this time.

I understand, but can you answer one more question? Do you plan to enlarge the British armed forces?

At the moment, no, the British armed forces won’t be expanded outside of the three vessels currently being built for the Royal Navy. However we do have plans to modernise the Army, Royal Air Force and the Royal Navy, by scraping old ships, and building new modern ones. This will be time consuming and expensive but it shall enable us to maintain the same number of ships and aircraft, therefore nations of the world will not look at Britain as a ‘military based’ nation or a threat…

That’s how the world and general public saw the situation, however inside the MOD (Ministry of Defence) more sinister talks were going on…

moddt1.jpg

MOD, Central London, UK.

In the offices of the MOD, the general situation report was brought together…

reportmarch2003aa8.jpg

Parliament has asked the MOD to predict where the next threat is coming from. A difficult task, which as many staff officers puzzled. “East” and “West” quite frankly does not exist anymore, as the world becomes increasingly capitalist. The officers are quite divided, but still have come up with a few likely suggestions:

Where shall the threat come from?
Will China challenge the United-States?
Will Russia try to re-establish itself as a Superpower?
What of India and Japan?
And of course… the European Union, not a threat to the UK, but if it were to rise united the IC power would make it the strongest State in the world. Would Britain be forced to join out of economic pressure?

“Damn it!” Chief of Staff Michael Boyce swore “Its not up to the military to decide the threat, the politicians should be doing that! But I suppose they’ve become lazy and left the job to us…”

“Well then, we should just pick a really easy threat then” the Chief of Staffs aide remarked with a laugh.

“Its not so easy unfortunately.” The chief grunted… “Let’s get back to work”

What are the current top industrial strengths of the World?

(Base IC / IC MOD)

USA: 176 / 555
China: 116 / 384
Japan: 77 / 251
India: 67 / 202
Germany: 60 /190
Russia: 53 / 171
France: 40 /129
UK: 40 / 126
Brazil: 40 / 123

“Well the UK is quite far behind, but I am not an economist” – Alan West (Head of Navy)
“But if you want those new aircraft carriers, you will have to be an economist!” – Gordon Brown (Armaments minister)
“We should be working on more pressing issues such as the War in Iraq, not writing reports and ‘what if’ studies.” – John Day (Chief of Air Force)

“The commanders in the field can handle that, we’ve just to make sure they get everything they’ll need” – Gordon Brown

We’ll gets have a cup of tea and then get back to work” – Michael Boyce

---

What shall be the path of the UK in the modern World? Generally most people in Britain have accepted that the days of the British Empire are gone and won’t return, but many are still find it difficult to accept that the UK doesn’t have as much influence as it once had on the global stage. Will Britain make an attempt to retake its status as a great world power? Would another major war break the country or make it stronger? And if the worst comes does come to the worst, how would the UK conduct a nuclear war? Most certainly survival chances in such a scenario would be slim, if not nil… but would the UK be able to ensure MAD (Mutually assured Destruction)?

Read on and you will see…

I will try to do the next update as quickly as possible… anybody interested so far?

NEXT UPDATE ON 30th JAN!!!

Ah, a modern scenario. I love those. And your United Kingdom has clear objectives that as a Frenchman I can only approve : economic development, commitment to allies, commitment to European militray and economic power.

Will Vlad's Russia and China cooperate for the mutual benefit of all parties involved, though ? I'll answer that with a trademarked Gallic shrug and an equally trademarked Gallic accent as I join the chorus "Send her victorious, happy and glorious, long to reign over us...."

Royal Navy is 5th?!?! Who are other four?

USA and Russia definately... I think france is ahead as well, dunno who the final one is, China seems doubtful, but I really don't know.

US, China, Russia........France!?!?! :D
interesting choice - good luck man - a good mod - however be aware that the events are a bit strange - had peaceful unification with china/taiwan as china nas russia/belarus as russia but later found myself in war over both taiwan and belarus that hadnt existed for 2 years....

I think UK is at least the 2nd or 3rd wolrd naval power.

nope i think thats kind of "mind propaganda" - we have the image in our heads from when the UK was an empire with lots of stuff but they arent anymore - some guy talks about UK and we think Rodney, Batlleships, a huge fleet etc - image is everything man - everything

Number of ships is somewhat misleading though: The RN has three carriers, Japan has none, for instance. Similar is true for China, both have more ships but they are much smaller.

CHAPTER 2: War in Iraq: 23rd March – 10th June 2003

The British Army in Iraq, after the 3rd and 4th armoured divisions and 2nd Infantry (MEC) division have arrived from the UK to assist the invasion force.

Here is the Order of Battle on the 12th April.

armyiraqak5.jpg

And on the way for support…

rnin5.jpg

The Plan:
The troops will attack Basra and move forward, supporting the American drive on Baghdad.

Combat starts for the British forces on the 15th April…

battleofbasrahgz7.jpg

After just 10 hours combat, the battle was over. A British victory, mainly thanks to the American air bombardment…

The British army supported the US forces all the way to Baghdad, but never engaged in Combat in the City.

Cya all later

The modern Royal Navy may be a fraction of what it was and certainly not comparable to the vast US fleet (who is these days) BUT who do you put as larger? The Russian Navy probably (assuming it works and has enough money to leave port, it does today thanks to oil revenue but didn't in 2003) but beyond that:
The PLAN doesn't have a working carrier, only a partialy complete hulk being used as a casino, and moreover is mostly Russian cast offs.

The Japanese navy lacks any carriers or nuclear hunter-killer subs, two essentials for a modern Blue Water navy. It's fine for what it is, a Maritime Self Defence Force, but it's not a navy that can project power.

The French Navy is comparable, possibly even better if you rate one full carrier better than three mid-size ones, although it does lack power projection and amphibious landing capability. The two are close even if there are arguments over the exact order.

So there's a good argument for the Royal Navy as the world's 3rd strongest fleet, beyond any argument top 5, as there's no better contender.

Anyway, always like a nice MDS2 AAR, I do hope your one has the unit and model names right though. Last time I played around I was building infantry called the 1st Indian Division which didn't seem quite right. Good luck and I'll be following this one.

I agree with that :) Its all about power projection these days. 1 Aircraft Carrier can waste a whole surface fleet at sea or at Port. Where as the combined air strength of 3CVLs defends much better than one. Maybe, depends on the weapons, air force, pilots and stuff.

But yeah, I would rate the RN as second or third personally.

LAND OF HOPE AND GLORY!!!
Yay! An Modern ARR about the UK! I LOVE these!

Good luck. Hopefully you'll be a lot more successful than the ai is for the us. Actually, knowing the US ai, you'll probably be doing most of the work.

DO NOT JOIN THE EVIL EU!

They only want to undo everything britain has been working for in the last 500+ years.

Plus, that means gameover for you.

Good luck with this, tho when I play I added an event to let me leave the Iraq war and USA alliance to set up an independent UK.

Oh, the Royal navy is 2nd most powerful in terms of power projection. The larger fleets (except USA unfortunately) are generally either older ships or are designed for close to shore work. And talking about the navy, make sure you build the rest of the 45's (at least 4 more)
