My two cents...

I enjoyed the tutorial. I learned the buttonology for it, at least. I learned about attrition, supply, the need for naval bases, how long it takes to discover Terra Incognita, the differences between colonies and trading posts, etc.

One thing, though: Why no save function in the tutorial? What was the logic behind that? I played it for 6 hours and won pretty handily. I like to think I was ahead of schedule, as I had to actually pull troops from the Balearics to fulfill the '25K troops in Gibraltar' mission. *laughs*

Still...I don't understand why the save function was disabled in the tutorial...

Been plugging away at the tutorial for a while and got bored. Checked out the forum - this thread has been great. I have a predeliction toward infrastructure activities and failed miserably. I'm into naval matters, too - as mentioned by others, I've learned a lot about attrition. I've been tediously building a string of ports to get closer to the Mameluks - the Balearic Islands has been my Malta, though - the tough natives keep on wiping out my assaults. I'll follow the advice of my predecessors and drop the tutorial.

Problem with Russia

I too am new to the game.

I'm slowly going through the manual and have worked my way through the tutorial till creating my first trade centre.

I then followed the advice of this thread and started up Russia. Immediately I was hit with information overload. All the provinces apear taken and at first glance their seems to be loads going on but not a lot todo.

Are their any tips which newer players should look at

i.e send a diplomat to/why?
send a trader to/why?

I give examples on the basis of my low understanding any other things I should be looking at?

Well, should I give up? Am I just hard to please (petulant old fart that I am)?
Or should I take your collective advice and try it again with Russia? Did someone say Portugal? FantasyLand?

I read all the tips gave by experimented players. Hartmann gave a good one: begin with Russia because of the steps you should do. Try this.

Personnally, I will accomplish a militaro-economical-geopolitical suicide wanting to begin with Brandenburg. Mouhahaha!

Same advice here....although i played and finished the tutorial when i got the game (which was a LONG time ago :) )i started playing a GC as Russia right after that and it was way more fun and i learned a lot. But that was with v1.0 and it was a lot easier to 'storm over europe/asia) with cheap russian infantry

You guys are too cool. I wish all game companies had the kind of responsiveness you all do. Hats off to you!

Tutorial

Hello, All:

Good morning from Canada! I hope this finds you and yours well. I agree with everything that has been said about the tutorial. I have to wait until my arteries harden until I get my first ship. I want to explore Scotland so bad--I can taste it!! ;)

Anyway, please, please, I love the game! Like some of you, I'm also a player of the Age of Empires series!! I like any game that is based on history. I had no idea that the United States was divided up in so many small pieces during the days of the American Revolution!!

In closing, I was wondering, since I am new here and to the game, if any of you people have any suggestions or ideas of where to start in EU outside of the tutorial. To put it honestly and bluntly, the tutorial stinks worse than a dead skunk in the middle of the 401! I can be reached at jhamilton@isp.on.ca.

The tutorial is poorly designed. The nations you need to interact with are too far away, and the emphasis on exploration is much higher than in the game proper. I thought EU was mainly about finding other nations, based on experience with the tutorial; after playing the GC, I see that exploration is an optional method to get VPs and expand influence.

Combine that with the immense frustration I - but no one else, it seems - had with getting my troops to board transports (I can only get them to board when their total weight is less then the capacity of the ship, but I thought the manual said that any excess would just be left behind on shore), and my early experiences with EU left me feeling a little clammy.

Having said that, now that I'm familiar with most of the game mechanics and such, EU is one of the greatest strategy games I've yet encountered. It's like a Russian novel: hard to get in to, slow to start, but once you're there, wow. ;)
