War on Rebels

The Polish king hath sacked a diplomat over the recent incidents. However, he will note that the correct way to combat rebels troubling a friendly neighbour is to arrange for military access and then send in the troops: Not to declare war on said neighbour :D

Tuscany has during a long time showed themself unfit as masters of their country and with the only motive of saving the Firenzian people Venice made the great sacrifice to kill off the rebels, remove the unfit rulers and rebuild the province.

The rebels of Tuscany was also believed to have connections with rebels all over the globe and is supposed to be responsible for the massacre at the Marcus Plaza in Veneto a few years ago. The world wide wanted (www) rebel leader Pietro di Ladenni was suspected to be hiding in the country with the good memory of the former rulers. He was able to escape though and is believed to have fleed to the Otto Otto caves in the Balkans where he is getting support from the evil Sultan. The Sultan has recently formed the Axis of Weasels. He is so far the only member.

The Tuscanian weapons of mass destruction the Venetian inspectors expected to find is still searched for but Venice is confindent to find them in due time.

As you all see, Venice had good reasons for liberating Firenze and should really getting applauds from the rest of the world as we have done a great thing for world peace. The income from the (olive-) oil of Firenze will be returned to the people through different investments in the country.

The Doge is pleased to hear that the incompetent diplomat of Poland is removed from the international scene and hopefully our friendship can be prolonged.

The Cold War of 1600s:

The latest game session saw the creation of a bipolar international alliance system. The Nether-Anglo Treaty Organization (NATO) was pitted against the United States of Sensible Reformers (USSR). The world is divided and prepares for war at any time. The beginning of the session saw the creation of these grand defensive alliances. In the middle of the session, the world was brought to the brink of war by the foolhardy actions of the English king. At the end, tensions remained extremely high.

The Royal Marriage Crisis:

The end of the war for Savoyard Liberation saw France officially unaligned. The war changed the strategic thinking of the Austrians, who began immediately dismembering their own alliance. Austria then joined the English/Netherlands alliance, forming the core of the NATO alliance structure. Russia, Brandenburg, and Sweden were later added as junior members. Facing another grand alliance aimed at her destruction, France was left with little choice but to form her own counterweight. France immediately entered into negotiations with Denmark and Spain. These three powers then courted the Portugese and the Polish. The final alliance was signed in the Polish Capital, thus forming the Warsaw Pact. With the USSR formed, the French strategic concerns were somewhat lessened. However, after many diplomatic disasters in Germany, France moved a colonial army to Savannah to protect her American possessions from potential NATO attack. England mistook this gesture as aggressive, began building a large army in the Americas, and broke her royal marriage with France. France was now on heightened alert and her military moved to an advanced strategic position in preparation for a possible war of English aggression. The French intelligence service began trying to get reconnaissance information on the state of affairs in the British Colonial Union Base in the Americas (British CUBA). A communique was sent out to French allies requesting reconnaissance information on the state of the British military in CUBA. This communique mistakenly fell into English hands. England mistook the French recon request as part of a preparation for war. Tensions exploded. The world was brought to the brink of war. In frantic 11th hour diplomacy, the French proposed a solution. The French Military Installations in the Secure Southern Lower Empire of Security (MISSLES) shall be withdrawn back to France in exchange for resumption of royal martimony. The Royal Marriage ensures that both sides have equal access to strategic intelligence and can effectively evaluate each other's military capacity. This operations on the principle of Mutual Assessment of Defense (MAD).

The Current Situation:

As long as the English and the Netherlands monopolize trade in the Pacific Rim, they will inevitably be drawn into conflict with the USSR. The day of reckoning will one day come. NATO will one day be lain low and the true power of the USSR will be revealed.

Ottoman Empire 1654-1700

I received the Ottoman Empire in a pretty good shape. A large treasury, peace with everyone, positive stab, no alliances. The income slider was a full Infra with the obvious aim to go for Infra 4 and then 5 (this suited me well). However the sliders were not exactly boosting income or production, they had been set for a nation at war. All in all I was happy.

First task was to wait until the Mamelukes could be brought to the Empire, they had only Egypt left. The peace ended in February 1656, and on November 9th 1656 the Mamelukes were totally annexed to the Ottoman Empire.

Aden (under AI) asked Ottomans to join alliance together with Mughals. After a period of sorting my thoughts out (and discussing with the Mughals and attempting to discuss with Persia) Ottomans accepted when Aden asked again.

A meteor was sighted and 18000 rebels began to siege Cyprus. As the rebels are no longer any pushovers I sent my main army to fight them (after the rebels had taken some attrition losses), and the rebels were _just_ beaten.

In 1657 the Köprülü family incidence rose to attention. I supported the Köprülü even though it resulted in several rebellions. That 4 to ADM for 240 months just is something one can't pass. The rebels were finally suppressed after a year of heavy fighting.

Ottomans reached Infra 4 and I began burning my money on Judges. I also went for manufacturies so that Ottomans wouldn't fall too far behind in the technology-race. As a result the treasury shrunk considerably.

Yet another slavic-rebellion sprung in the Empire, but it was put down. After that the population seemed to calm, as no new rebellions happened in 15 years.

With a concern I followed the almost absolute rule England, Netherlands and Russia had on the world. In mainland Europe their position was not so strong, but elsewhere they did as the pleased. The three combined seemed as a unstoppable force. The Netherlands conquered new lands in China, Russia annexed the tatar-lands, England pressing ridiculous ultimatums to get bases in the Med (ultimatums that Russia was supporting and Netherlands didn't try to stop).

Persia warned Russia that she must stop or there where will be consequenses. Russia didn't care. Persia warned again, and Russia still didn't care. After that I think it was obvious to most rulers that this was the shape of the world: the alliance of Russia, England and Netherlands would rule us all if they were not stopped.

Russia brought 17,000 to the borders of the Empire. After I asked repeadetly what they are doing there Russia informed they are a safeguard against Austria. A valid reason of course, if there just had been any Austrian lands nearby... In the end Russia did withdraw the troops away.

Persia asked Ottomans for support. I promised it if there is a large coaltion. Persia guaranteed there is indeed a very large and strong coalition.

Then the war began. And indeed there was a large coalition.

Ottomans moved 45,000 men to position and built another 30,000 men as the second wave. Treasury going low it was of course at this moment a military advisor appeared with his services to improve Quality and Offense. I took a loan to get him.

Ottomans DOW'd Russia and their vassal Wallachia.

Then the game slowed down seriously. Much unnecessary pausing happened, and it took 2 hours to get the game moving 6 months. During this time Ottoman troops soundly beat the Russian hordes sent against us, and the sieges went well. With a CRT-bonus and superior leader I really didn't fear anything Russia could possibly throw against the Empire.

But there was a lot talking of ending the war. As Ottomans had entered the war separately and nobody seemed to be interested I began to fear the Empire would end fighting alone against Russia. Then I saw a Persian army decimated by Russians. I did't feel very good about the situation even though the current situation looked modestly said splendid.

I offered Russia a very mild peace: Bujak and Dobrudja back to the Empire, Russia would cancel the vassalization of Wallachia. After a moment (and yet a victorious battle to the Empire) Russia accepted.

Then the game was stopped. Supposedly it will continue today, and I certainly will be there lurking around to get the Ottomans again :)

edited to include the Sunday session

And so it did. And I got OE.

Sitting there wondering what to do next except drinking coffee a rush of settlers together with an Conquistador came. Yes!

As the Empire didn't get settlers this was the perfect situation to bost up my TP's around the African Horn. One of them successfully was upgraded to a Colony, then it was just to get land connection to the Empire. Between lay Ethiopian and Nubian lands in a harsh terrain.

So I put an army under the Conquistador and DOW'd Ethiopia. The war went well, if one dosn't take into account that Ethiopians burned the TP's. And as the Empire had no settlers the A controlled Morocco settled the lands.

Ethiopia surrendered and the Empire annexed land to get the "Ottoman Road" up from the African Horn. Morocco was settling the new lands as mad, and I though what a splendid idea to let them build up to colonies and then DOW.

So I waited until I though now is the right time. I took up the Diplomac screen, and smack, the game crashed. AAAARGH.

Well, the other players noticed I had gone, but since OE was at peace they continued for about 10 years.

When finally the game was rehosted I noticed that the conquistador had died (of course). Morocco however got a player, so I wanted to discuss with him about the situation. I offered to buy the lands, but there was some confusion. In the end I said I'll DOW if we can't have a deal. The player then left, presumably (hopefully...) crashing. Well, as the rule is the we don't DOW crashed nations I was again just a few seconds away from getting the DOW...

Ottomans went for "Rein them in" in "The Decentralizing Effect of the Provincial System". Some nice bonuses, but also a -6 to Stab and half the army desrted. Ouch. Well, luckily the cash situation was ok (mainly due to years of inactivity), so after some serious fighting all the rebellions were finally put down (Cyprus was a real tough one).

During the years of inactivity OE had got Infra 5, so the upgrading of Mayors was now possible. The Sultan must have been under lucky stars as some nice events happened, for example Rush of settlers (again), plus got deflation 5%.

Much hard feelings were brought forward during this time by the *very* aggressive trader-policy of Netherlands. Dutch traders were simply said loathed in many parts, including in the OE cot's :( It is not nice to try to destroy other lands economy just to get a few coins more, but that seemed to be the idea for the Dutch Trading Company during this era. I seriously began to consider harsh countermeasures (embargos, pirates), but I didn't want to ruin my relations with the Dutch for good. But those measures were seriously considered, and they should be taken into consideration in the future if Holland doesn't change her policy.

The Empire set the troops ready to blitz through Morocco held lands. All I was waiting for was the game to crash.... Which never happened. In 1700 the game was decided to be halted for now. And then it was decided we call it quits or today. And then that it continues 27th of April.

So let it be known: If I can't for some reason be OE the next time this is played, please OE, DOW Morocco immediatly. When you get into the game, DOW Morocco, then write "in". Just to be sure the b***** does't escape justice again. I've been waiting for it for too long ;)

LOL. Edited Explorers to Conquistadors, perhaps it makes more sense now :)

Venice 1654-1673

The Republic of Venice was during this period strengthening its neutral position in Europe. Young men and women from the Venetian ruling families was sent to royal houses all over Europe to improve relations and supply information. The political climate in Europe seemed to improve and only the German nations was making war resulting in a weakening of the former strong Hessen.

In Italy Austria held their provinces of Istria and Apulia and kept Sardinia and Naples as vassals, thus holding a strong position in the area. Corsica is still independant although with excellent relations to Venice. The Doge of Venice and the Pope of Rome was allied together with the Venetian vassals Modena. Sicily held all of the island and Albania.

The Republic had very good relations with all the neighbours including the Ottoman Empire, France, Austria, Spain and Portugal. The Helvetian aggressions into Germany was not looked upon with a friendly eye.

In the early 1560:s England asked for a Navy base in Venetian territory and the Republic complied. A few months passed and England then declared that they wanted possesion over Corsica. I, the Doge, together with the great Sultan of the Ottomans and the French King, replied that no English presence in Italy was to be accepted. As England seemed to behave in a very unrational and aggressive manner, Venice decided to support the "English-Free-Mediteranian Declaration". Support was only given to England by Russia and Brandenburg and hostility was shown by most other nations. England pulled back.

In the late 1560:s Venice started to fulfill their colonial ambitions. An army was shipped to Bangkok to start an offensive but it failed due to mutiny among the troops. More troops was shipped to the area and Cambodia was attacked. In 1673 the last of the two enemy provinces was about to fall and the first Venetian colony is soon to be.

A great war also started during the end of this period. France and its allies of Spain, Denmark and Portugal attacked Holland and England. The attackers was also supported on other fronts by Persia and the Ottomans. The outcome is uncertain but it is clearly stated that Venice will stay neutral in the conflict.

Domenic Contarini,
Doge of the Venetian Republic

Venice 1674-1700

A devastating war was spreading all over the globe but I, as the Doge of Venice, did everything to keep our nation out of the conflict. Dispite Venetian protests, Austria and France battled each other on Italian soil. But in respect of the Republic, both nations refrained from looting the countryside.

The development of the war was complicated and is better told by others. But another conflict would involve Venice in a more direct way. The Dutch had much trade influence in Veneto and after friendly negotiations the King in Amsterdam agreed to decrease it to a certain level. During the following years this agreement was constantly broken. After official protests the Dutch agreed to honour the treaty in the future but offered no compensation.

Many nations noticed the Venetian annoyance over the Dutch behaviour and secretely, diplomats from all over the globe was sent to Veneto to discuss possible actions. As Venice is a peaceloving republic, it settled the issue with new promises from Amsterdam. No embargo was set in action but Venice still have a rightful claim for compensation from the Netherlands.

Venice, as the neutral nation it has been for almost 100 years, is looking upon the Dutch nation with awe and admiration. But the behaviour of this great nation has angered many and it is my firm belief that it must change it ways to once more gain the friendship of the world.

The expansion in the Far Asia was successful, even though the Venetian Colonial Army faced, in number, greater forces. Cambodia was totally on her knee and forced to hand over Da Nang and accept to be a vassal of Venice. A few years later Kwai was taken after a war with most of the local primitive but populous tribes.

In Italy Sicily was brought in into the Italian community for real when joing Venice, Modena and the Papal State in the All Italian Alliance. A Royal Marriage was also arranged between the Sicilian and Venetian houses. The Venetian vassal Modena was offered to join the realm of Venice but declined as they apparently didn't approve of the Far East expansion.

Venice now stands at a waypoint, chosing between colonial expansion and closer relations with Modena and Sicily. While considering this, the trade of Venice has exploded in the last few years of the 17th century and will hopefully continue to grow.

Sylvester Valiero,
Doge of the Venetian Republic

The Netherlands 17th Century

17th Century saw the rise of the small dutch republic into the world theater. France tried innumerable times to defeat the newly found small nation along its border. Righteousness by its side the Dutch armies prevailed over the seeminly superior foe, and tore the French apart, culminating in dutch armies capturing Paris and surrounding provinces near the end of the century. France was humiliated, and now the dutch stand upon a new dawn, hopefully a peacefull one after all the hardship, with their Austrian brothers.

Temporary insanity of the dutch vice regent that ruled the country for some time, caused much disarray in european trade routes, and many countries embargoed the dutch in panic, now with the proper authorities back in position we hope this situation can be restored to its previous state and the foolish actions of the vice regent can be forgiven to the friendly and peacefull little nation, at the heart of europe.

Willem III of Nassau, ruler of the Dutch.

1653-1700

Saturday went remarkably well despite some groans but we got the game up and running. An extremely slow start on sunday (6 crashes in 4 years) made way to 3 sessions that broke naturally after 5-7 years. However, we made the 1700 mark successfully which I doubt many of us sunday morning would have thought even vaguely possible.

On a side note it will now be pointless complaining about Subs any longer, I will no longer acknowledge any sub related comments unless they either informative or are presented in a reasonable and coherant ICQ or email format explaining the problem. If there has been real incompetance as opposed to something that you dont like then I will, as I always do, alter the file. I believe to date we have had 3 occassions of incompetance; being Ottomans, Spain and England.

1653-1700

It seems like not alot happened, well at least I didnt think much had happened but everytime I explain it to someone they are like 'wow'. So I guess the game hasnt started to stagnate quite yet, indeed I suspect that the next session might be extremely interesting. We had around 15-18 players for the weekend session.

As usual I cant remember exact dates and will invariably get some bits incorrect.

The old alliances had changed somewhat and the previous system didnt bear up at all as predicted by me in Ryoken's thread on the MP forum.

England, Holland, Russia, Sweden and Austria were attacked by France, Denmark, Spain and Portugal over what was effectively Dutch and English strangle hold on world trade and other nations trying to grab back a share. Russia, Sweden and Austria didnt fight as they had nothing to gain, leaving Holland and England to fight it out.

The war was a remarkable opening success for the French led forces, defeating the main English fleet twice off Portsmouth and then almost annhilating it during the third battle, sinking around 70 ships. Having watched the massive Dutch and English fleets parade up and down the channel this was the biggest surprise in a long time.

However, the war gradually swung around as Dutch forces in South America quickly overan French and Spanish forces and the Americas turned into a stalemate. In addition to this Austria double crossed the allies and switched sides. A French invasion of Kent was repelled. Portugal meanwhile fought against increasingly large odds across its Empire, fihgting in SA and West Africa as well as in india. In Europe French forces launched a series of badly advised assaults on Zeeland which the dutch easily repeled being behind a river and in a marsh. Combined with the disappearance of the French fleet the Danish and Portugese fleets could no longer handle the Dutch fleet alone and it became apparent that the war couldnt be won easily and without antagonism and thus white peace was declared.

The second war had a more decisive result. France fought Holland alone and again repeatedly stormed Zeeland which effectively cost it the war for a second time but this time France was lucky not to get dismembered. The Dutch took Paris and helped themselves to Northern France, whilst the Austrians, joined in as well massacring the main French army with superior tech. France got off lightly indeed losing some colonies.

This established Holland as the premier power in Europe, displacing the English who were going though some bad management.

In the East Russia defeated the Persians pushing them back into the caucauses. But the Ottomans where able to push the Russians back to Jedisan removing them from the balkans for now.

Whilst the Mughal empire did relatively little for 50 odd years apart from rebuild and dismember Hyderbad with Mysore. Although I suspect the Mughals are preparing for something big and I am fairly sure I know what it is. Mysore is also a significant size having got the lions share of hyderbad. We also saw the emergence of 'uber' Orissa with Austrian level stats. Austria was forced to retreat from India and lose its foothold there.

Poland was finally broken having been attacked by vastly superior Austrian forces and Prussia was formed from Brandenberg. Austrian lead in land tech began to show, in 2 wars it had won very rapid and effective victories.

The rest of Germany is split between Saxony, Hessen and Switzerland.

Portugal continued to turn brazil into a very densely populated part of the planet and the rainforests were removed 300 years early! Expansion up the coast of West africa continued as well.

Spain continued to rebuild and started to actually get inflation down and improve its trade. Slow but gradual growth for most of the past 50 years.

Venice has been extremely quiet for a long time. One wonders what it has been up to, I can only remember it asking people not to fight on its soil repeatedly. EDIT- It seems that Venice has been busy expanding at the expense of Dai Viet and now has holdings in Vietnam.

Denmark and Sweden expanded in the far east and conqured Bali and brunei with the 'help' of England who was learning quick, "where is brunei?" :). Both nations also managed to expand their trade some more. England was convinced not to expand into the Mediterrean..... But we look forward to the return of more experienced monarchs.

Holland now has a fabulous income and had a wonderful 50 years. Austria too has recovered from the devastation of the early Fench wars. Russia continued to expand and is a very large power now. France declined somewhat alongside England, with such low trade tech, due to early mismanagement, France isnt able to compete.

GAME NOTES

There will be no tsunami next weekend as I go away on holiday. But I hope to return the following weekend and prepare to put this game to bed.

On a side note its been interesting how much more naval warfare there has been. I believe the changes in the patches have been responsible for this- well done Johan.

The Kingdom of Portugal, 1654 - 1693

The latter half of the seventeenth century was to be a time of economic growth for Portugal. Portugal's colonial empire was established, and large cities were developing in Africa and Brazil. However, the population and our vast wealth was centered in our great capital Lisbon, the jewel of Iberia. With a population of 154,000, Lisbon had fully half of all of Portugal's people (Portugal's total population was estimated at just over 300,000).

In 1656, Afonso VI rose to Portugal's throne. He proved to be a weak and feebleminded ruler, and made some questionable decisions that drew harsh criticism from Portugese strategists. Examples of these were the 1658 trade agreement with Sardinia, viewed as a sign of economic weakness, and an incident in 1659 where Afonso dishonourably refused to support an alliance military action with Denmark.

1667 saw a change, when Afonso's brother Pedro II tired of the situation and deposed Afonso. The change in rule happened without serious trouble, as Portugal's nobles and advisors welcomed the new king with open arms.

Pedro began his reign with Europe in the grips of tension the likes that had not been seen since before most Europeans were born. England and the Netherland had established a nearly total dominance over world trade. Portugal had but a few scattered merchants in Europe, and it's trading technology was behind that of many other countries. Earlier rulers in Portugal had concentrated on infrastructure development, promoting governors to fight the inflation that had been harming Portugal's economy for many decades. Pedro made a vow to the merchants of Portugal that he would make Portugal a great trading nation, with wealth that would rival that of even the greedy Dutch.

But the fulfillment of this vow would wait. In 1669 a standoff was formed between France and her allies (Spain, Portugal, Denmark, and Austria), against the northern alliance of England, Netherlands, Sweden, and Denmark, and Russia. There was much researching of military technology and building of troops and ships, and diplomats were even seen travelling between Europe and the three great Islam empires. In late 1671, Persia declared war on Russia, the Ottomans declared war on Russia, and in December 1671, France declared war against the Netherlands. All allies joined the war, and together with Europe, the whole world descended into chaos.

In January 1672 however, a strange turn of events took place. Immediately after joining the war, Austria signed peace with the Netherlands. But the war went on. In a massive naval battle where Danish, Portugese, Spanish, and French ships were involved, the English fleet under the command of York was defeated. France invaded Holland with something in the order of 150,000 troops and Flanders and Brabant fell quickly.

At this same time, Portugal was fighting colonial battles against Sweden, and against Holland. An army of some 10,000 infantry marched from the city of Ilha de Marajo in northwestern Brazil through western Amazonia, burning Dutch trading posts all the way through. In East Africa, Swedish troops attacked the Portugese troops in Malindi, defeating them. However, Portugal's troops regrouped in Inhambane, and defeated Sweden in return (but losing many to gunfire and attrition). Portugese warships and a small contingent infantry sailed to the English colonies of Mahe and Ceylon, defeating an even smaller group of troops and taking the colonies in quick time.

In 1673 Austria entered into alliance with the Netherlands and the tide of the war turned against Portugal. An Austrian navy landed in the Portugese city of Sao Felipe de Benguel in Luanda, and an invasion army of 10,000 infantry under a general moved south down the coast facing little resistance. Meanwhile in South America, Portugal's troops fought against a Dutch colonial army. Out of supply, weakened by attrition and facing better equipped Dutch troops, Portugal did not stand a chance and was forced back. Portugal fled back to Marajo and one half of the army set up defensive positions facing the dutch troops across the Amazon river, together with fresh Brazilian recruits. The other half of the army turned west and seized the Austrian provinces of Guyana and Surinam, occupying the gold mining town of Port Austria with no resistance. Austria responded by burning the trading posts of Cubango, Ovambo, and Damara, while Netherlands burnt the Portugese trading posts in the eastern half of Amazonia. Meanwhile in the Indian ocean, an English colonial army attacked the small Portugese contingent in Ceylon and slaughtered them, retaking the island. And in the North Sea, another naval engagement was fought. Portugal, Denmark and France suffered heavy losses from the Dutch navy and newly built English ships.

In 1674 most countries including Russia, England, Sweden, Portugal, Denmark, and Spain pulled out of the war. But between France and Netherlands, things were bitter and the two countries continued to war. The war was long and bloody, but the odds were heavily stacked against France. Dutch and Austrian troops were superior, and the Dutch funds were limitless. Dutch troops finally occuped Paris, and in 1681 peace was negotiated, with the three remaining French colonies in South America being passed to the Netherlands.

In 1676 Portugal gained the services of the excellent minister, Count de Ericeira. He was a strong believer in mercantilistic philosophies, and his policies were embraced by King Pedro. Portugal ended the trade agreements it had generously given the pesky merchants from Sardinia and Morocco, and issued trading embargoes against them. In foreign countries, however, Portugal treated most of it's trading partners with great respect, sending only one or two merchants to foreign centres of trade.

During the 1680s and 1690s, Portugal began building great sugar refineries in Brazil. Sugar was a commodity much desired by the peoples of the world, and a community that Portugal produced in great quantities. The refineries would help Portugal's trading technology immensely in years to come. Portugal also signed landmark trade agreements with England and Denmark. At the same time, Portugal's economy was blessed with a couple of remarkably excellent years.

Peter perhaps I needed to place greater emphasis on the sentance Although I suspect the Mughals are preparing for something big and I am fairly sure I know what it is.

I am sure that your relative quiet has not been without reason :)

As ever I have corrected my orginal post to try to incorporate the inevitable mistakes I make. Quite facinating to read about Portugese adventures against the Dutch and Austrians, sounds like a very interesting war. I did manage to get about 15K of forces to West Africa to help but peace was signed within a month of this force arriving.

I love the per capita table. The Chagatai Khaganate sounds like a great place to live and Russia is surprisingly high up the table.

I am amazed my BB is so high. Taking Brunei and Bali must be the bulk of it and having to break a truce when I misadvertenly signed peace with Russia in the great Dutch wars.

But what is striking is that everyone has virtually zero BB which I find somewhat humerous in light of certain complaints.

Although why is Venice so high?

A brief note on trade, from the essays of Count de Ericeira of Portugal

The Netherlands claim to be bringing a new age of free trade and liberalism to Europe. However, they are very selective as to who they offer trade agreements to, they have embargoed the merchants of Sweden, and they send troops en masse to foreign COTs. They also conquered Shanghai off the hapless Chinese.

As at 1693, the Netherlands had monopolies in Moscow, Astrakhan, Liguria, Ile de France, Flandern, Kansai, Manhattan, Holland, Jakarta, Guayaquil, and it had five merchants in Zanzibar, Alexandria, Danzig, Veneto, Zacatecas, Malacca, Kutch, Mascate, Shanghai, Andalusia, Thrace, Table, and Samar. While the Dutch should be respected for their economic strength, their lack of respect for foreign traders and brutal subjugation of the Chinese is a dark stain on the Dutch conscience.

Portugal's established belief is that all countries have a right to share in the rich bounty God has provided for us, even the heathens. It is our policy to carefully control the number of merchants we send overseas, that other nations may also participate equally in the wealth. The Dutch have not done this. Instead they have commited the deadly sin of gluttony, and we believe that God shall deliver their judgement in the afterlife.

Correct. But Dai Vet is together with Mallaca the only Southeast Asia nation I haven't been at war with. The BB is gained through three wars down there after which Da Nang and Kwai became Venetian.

The tables do not look very favourable for Venice and that is because of the inexperience (read incompetence, editors note) of its ruler(s). Though, in 1700 I think the income should be at least 15% higher as the trade only started to expand.

Have included the last period in my AAR. Could anyone please advice me who the last Venetian Dog(e) was?
I haven't got access to the save file for the moment.

I think Pibe did a great job, but being busy as he was, I think he didn't have a complete overview on all agreements he made and actions he took. Thats why people was upset. The tsunami game really tests your ability to handle lots of information.

i have to admit i was very very lucky. France was defeated because of his failure attack using Cologne as a bridge just to avoid the river penalty. Very clever indeed. But my land technology was superior, and of couse Nassau of Netherland is a good general. I was very hurt of that attack as well as France was. I recruited lots of mercenaries and i rapidly marched to Paris, and of course i took Paris, i was going to accept the white peace France was offering me but Austria joined in the war.
I finally agreed with my french warmonger, 3 colonies was taken and all happy.
The worst part came after the war. A weird "cold war" which i wasn't told by the original player (Red Phoenix), started to affect me and my traders. I have to admit i was monopolizing many cots, but all could have been solve with talk and some agreements. most of the players were annoyed of Neth power (many times used as an excuse to embargo me), interesting situation. i thought France was the bad boy.
Danish embargo on me continued, England broke its good relations and Sweden (the only player who was monopolizing without any complaints) tried to pull me off Shangai's cot. So, as a result of danish embargo and danes / swedish intentions in Shangai i embargoed them all.

Johan's comments about the number of allies in my alliance has no sense. many countries asked me nicely to join in my alliance, even France was interested (after the war) . I think many of the players tried to obtain some advantages of my subing, i had no idea about the facts Neth became great and i didn't know the agreements neth had with other countries. i didn't was warned about the "cold war". all i have done was win the war as Red demanded me.

i enjoyed the game anyways. but i'll appreciate more cooperation next time.
anyone knows why Neth was attacked by France? i didn't also know that :)

Although quite a bit of the damage to England was done by subs I also damaged her economy somewhat.

I experienced now what it means if you want to play World Power for some time. You got many little alliance partners all pulling you in other directions, crying for help and needing monetary support. This drains your economical and military ressources extraordinarily.

The hobby gets better and better. With 8-player EU2 we had sometimes 2 big power blocs. But this is in no way doable or managable in EU2. You can not get 5-6 powers in line except for small wars against some other powers. And no economy can sustain endless wars over hegemony because there are too many guys out there.
And my ruinous promoting Brandenburg venture (By financing him heavily and buying estates for him from Sweden) crippled my economy much more.

But England remains quite strong still but she is no first rate power anymore. But I still hope to get her up to that again.:D

Letter from the Great Mogul to the King of England, 1700

Reasonably mighty king of England,

You are aware that England is the sole remaining Imperialist nation in India, yes? And that the Europeans have brought precious little good to India? They keep monopolising our trade and trying to convert the faithful, and they helped us not in our times of need.

Nevertheless, the Great Mogul wishes the king of England good health and a prosperous resurrection of the strength of his kingdom - outside India.

The King of England should follow the wise decision of the Holy Roman Empire and leave. Fully sixty thousand of my brave soldiers applauded on the border of Orissa, when the Roman Emperor decided to withdraw from India. It was a truly great show. I am sure it also heartened the 3,000 Austrian survivors of the invasion of Orissa. Some of them were even seen crying with sheer joy.

Do not feel unloved: The Great Mogul will throw your governor a lavish farewell party and gift you with a hundred dark-eyed virgins. A reliable crew is suggested for their transport.

The wise rulers of the Mughal Empire and Mysore shall take care of protecting Ganges, Bombay, and Palakimedi when you leave.

Have a nice trip.

By the Will of Allah, I remain
Aurangzîb I,
Mughal Emperor,
Khan of the Chagatai,
Lord of the Punjab,
Prince of the Marathi,
Subduer of the Uzbeks,
Great Friend of Mysore,
The Sword of Allah.

eek

sounds like the Dutch deserve to get Embargoed and a bunch of pirates thrown at them....

Poor exploited states of the world unite against the imperalist capitalist exploiters competing in your centers of trade and driving your honest hardworking people out of work and into poverty! Unite! Unite against the glottony of the imperalist capitalist scavangers of Europe....Unite in denying them the trade that should rightfully belong to YOUR hardworking honest traders....Unite and send forth an armada of pirates to prey upon their shipping like a swarm of grasshoppers set upon a field. Let the gluttony of the English and the Dutch be their own undoing as the downtrotten and poverty strucken nations of this world unite against them in a great move to reclaim the world trade for the good of all the people and not just for the fat lazy bastard Dutch and English Ill-doing merchant-scavangers who like leaches live by sucking the life-blood of honest nations. Stop them, let them no longer steal the milk from the children in your realm, stop them from driving your honest hardworking artisans out of job and into banditry, let them no longer work to underminde the very foundation of your realm or someday sooner than you think all shall crumble and all spoils shall go to the reformed merchant scavangers.....

:)

(ps: im not in the game...I just felt inspired)

Pirates... you should see how many pirates were being raised all over the place (immediately after the great war of 74 - 81 IIRC). They were all over the Caribbean, the coasts of South America, even plundering whaler ships off the Norwegian coast. And the Mediterannean sea was swarming with them. I think France was responsible for some of them, but I do not think most of them.
There was probably a point where there were more pirates on the water than all the European navies combined, and that is saying a lot.

There have been more privateers used in 20 years of Tsunami than every other game I have played in combined.

When this is all over I really want to know who is continually placing pirates all over the globe. I have my suspicions, but they always appear in exactly the same place off the new foundland coast but never off any of my other colonies.

There are always some off the coast of America but I am not sure whether subs didnt realise or whether they are actually new ones.

I never saw any in the Med, but it does make me laugh. I will have to check out a save. I quite literally sunk over 50 pirate ships off the coast of Norway, most of which were placed really badly.

During the war I chucked quite a few up around the coast of England but I guess they were cleared fairly easily. I also placed a fair few in the Far East but have no idea if they made it to pesky pirate status.

The French are notorious at not clearing them out of the mediterrean despite warnings that their coasts are almost continually over run.

Well there aren't too many countries that had the resources to place the quantity of pirates that we saw. I did think it rather odd that right after all the pirates were placed, England went bankrupt (and I don't think it was entirely due to declining trade revenues that caused that problem).

I usually rely on privateers when at war, but Austria's economy simply can't afford spending a few hundred ducats on pirates each year unless absolutely needed.

I wonder if England took alot of loans out during the war and subsequently couldnt pay them back as trade revenues declined? Which wasnt helped as Allan could have been placing privateers everywhere? Although I find this theory unlikely as they were appearing off Englands coasts during his tenure.

I will go through the game log and the saves that I have to find out when England took the loans and how it went bankrupt.
