I think my Carrier-based Fighters will omit the ground support pods. Planet-based Fighters will have them.
So you will be making two different types of carriers? One for ground based combat and one for space combat. I believe one FFA allows 6 fighter or one space ship to support that unit. Not really sure how you get that to work right. Not sure if that needs to go in the unit itself or HQ units for the whole formation.

I still trying to find answers about support ART and AA. Based on what I found light only works in the unit itself. Medium is for support units and only works for units it's in the same formation layer as. Heavy works for the whole formation and is for rear units or support. I not sure if that does it automatically or if I needed to manually assign it.

Since I am not ready to build warships yet I been trying to learn the ground combat stuff.

The first three Battle-class Heavy Cruisers have been launched, and three more laid down. Unfortunately, fleet training is still on hold until we can build up a good reserve of maintenance supplies... it was the intensive training program that we were running that exhausted our supply stockpile last time.

EDIT:

Our third production run of Streak Fighters has completed, bringing the total up to 252 strike craft. One more run to go.

Sounds like we're far enough along that, supplies permitting, we can go scout.
Yeah, I'm going to spend a couple of years building up a supply stockpile... recall that you can't just BUILD supplies, you build maintenance facilities and THEY trickle out supplies... and then we can start exploring.

I had set the mid-1980s as our target date for the break-out. It is now May 1980, and it looks like we can go any time.

Commander Culise is the only PC officer who decided to stay with the Scouts instead of switching to a warship. So he will be the first to explore an alien star system.

Moving assets into position for that now...

May 2nd, 1980 - Thirty-three years after the mysterious incident at Roswell, mankind's first interstellar venture is launched. Assisted by the ESNS Aristarchus acting as jump tender, Commander Culise takes the ESNS Agassiz through the worm-hole anomaly known as Sol JP-1.

out_there_037.jpg

Seconds later, he rematerializes in the star system Luhman 16. The system is composed of a L8-VII Brown Dwarf, less than 1/20th the mass of Sol and too cool and dim to support Hydrogen fusion, orbited at about 450 m-km by an even dimmer and cooler T1-VII Methane Dwarf. No planets, moons, asteroids or comets.

A rather anti-climatic beginning to our exploration of the galaxy. After recovering from jump-shock, Commander Culise will head back through the worm-hole to Sol and explore another jump point.

May 3rd, 1980 - Exploration of the second jump point leads to 61 Hydrae, an even dimmer Y0-VII sub-dwarf only about 20 times the mass of Jupiter. This is close to the minimum Deuterium fusion limit, so it is arguable whether the object is really a star at all or just a loose gas giant planet. No planets, moons, asteroids, or comets.

May 7th, 1980 - Exploration of the third jump point finally reveals a star system worth investigating. Wolf 359, an M6-V Red Dwarf only 1/6th the mass and 1/200th the luminosity of Sol. It has an entourage of one Venus-like planet (gravity nearly twice Earth-standard, atmospheric pressure 177 Earth-normal and temperature 1,333 Centigrade) and six comets.

Commander Culise will stay and search the system for minerals while another Geo-Scout explores the fourth worm-hole.

May 18th, 1980 - ESNS Darwin has explored the fourth jump point in the Sol system and has discovered the new star system of Epsilon Eridani. A K2-V star somewhat smaller and dimmer than Sol, with three rocky planets, one of them barely within range of colonization using special life support equipment (no atmosphere and 600 degrees Centigrade). No moons, no asteroids, no comets. ESNS Darwin will remain in-system to search for mineral deposits, while another Geo-Survey vessel explores the fifth jump point.

EDIT:

Commander Culise on ESNS Agassiz has located a low-grade mineral deposit on Wolf 359 A-1. The deposit contains several minerals at 10% concentration, but most signifigant aspect of the strike is 20 million tons of Neutronium at 40% concentration. This is worth mining, but just barely.

AND:

Culise has made a decent mineral strike on a comet in the Wolf 359 system. It appears that this star system will be worth exploiting after all. Not spectacular, though.

ESNS Gould has explored the fifth Sol jump point and found the new star system of GJ 1211, a bare White Dwarf with no planets, moons, asteroids or comets. He will regroup to explore the sixth and last Sol jump point.

Commander Culise has finished his mineral survey of the Wolf 359 system. The planet was disappointing but the comets were rich in minerals, including one strike of over 600,000 tons of Duranium at 90% purity. All told, a satisfactory result. The Commander Culise and the ESNS Agassiz have been recalled to Earth for shore leave and overhaul, and the ESNS Descartes has been dispatched to the Wolf 359 system to search for exit jump points. One of our Jump Point Stabilization Vessels is now at work creating a two-way Jump Gate to the Wolf 359 system. This project will take more than a year to complete.

The survey of the Epsilon Eridani system by an nPC in ESNS Darwin was not so fortunate. The entire system is barren. No minerals at all. The ESNS Eddington has been dispatched to Epsilon Eridani to search for jump points out.

EDIT:

ESNS Gould has explored the last of Sol's jump points, and discovered the new star system of 25 Ursae Minoris. A very dim Brown Dwarf, barely larger than a Gas Giant planet. Six comets. No planets, moons or asteroids. ESNS Gould is exploring the comets for minerals now.

We have discovered a jump point exiting the 61 Hydrae system, presumably leading to a star system further away.

The geological survey of the 25 Ursae Minoris system has finished. Again, the comets are the main bodies of interest.

So out of the six star systems adjacent to Sol, none have any planets more habitable than the moons of Jupiter. Only two have any minerals at all... and in both cases the economic minerals are confined to the cometary halo surrounding the stars.

Not a particularly promising start for our exploration of the galaxy... but neither is it disasterous.

Perhaps we should build some Orbital Habitats to tow into Wolf 359 and 25 Ursae Minoris, to validate our claim to those two systems?

Exploring the newly discovered jump point in the 61 Hydrae system, ESNS Wegener has discovered the new system of V1216 Sagittarii. An M4-V Red Dwarf, one Venus-like world, two Mars-like worlds, and six comets. ESNS Wegener is remaining in the system to search for minerals.

EDIT:

Exploring a newly-discovered jump point in Wolf 359, the ESNS Marsh has found the new star system of Psi Ceti. It is composed of two Red Dwarf stars in a binary configuration. No planets, no moons, no asteroids, no comets.

Looks like we used all our resources luck in the Sol System (so far at least)

Might be best to claim all system next to us, maybe systems beyond them will have some nice systems for us to colonize and claim.

Wolf 359 has half-decent minerals. Only in the cometary halo, though.

Orbital Habs must be placed in orbit around a planet, moon, asteroid or comet. They cannot be placed in orbit around a star.

... so three of the adjacent systems cannot be claimed.

The ESNS Wegener has made a nice mineral strike on V1216 Sagittarii A-II:

V1216 Sagittarii-A II
Duranium 472,392 Acc 0.8
Neutronium 1,774,224 Acc 0.6
Corbomite 2,624,400 Acc 0.2
Tritanium 715,716 Acc 0.4
Boronide 254,016 Acc 0.8
Mercassium 842,724 Acc 0.2
Vendarite 1,920,996 Acc 0.8
Sorium 1,016,064 Acc 0.8
Uridium 2,624,400 Acc 0.5
Corundium 374,544 Acc 0.4
Gallicite 1,920,996 Acc 0.2

Four minerals at 80%, one at 60%, one at 50%, five others at lower concentrations. All of them in the hundreds of thousands (or even in the millions) of tons.

FYI V1216 Sagittarii is two jumps from Sol, beyond 61 Hydrae.

ESNS Lyell has discovered the new star system of Groombridge 34, two jumps from Sol beyond Luhman 16. Two Red Dwarf stars in a binary relationship. The primary star is barren. The distant secondary (three times as far from the primary as Pluto is from the Sun) has one gas giant, five rocky planets (one as good as Mars), five moons and a few dozen asteroids.

Exploring a jump point in 61 Hydrae, the ESNS Russel has found the new star system of Alpha Centauri, two jumps from Sol. A G2-V primary star, slightly hotter and more massive than Sol, with a K1-V secondary star, slightly smaller and cooler than our sun. Each of the two stars has two Mars-like worlds (for a total of four) and there are also a couple of worlds about as habitable as the moons of Jupiter. In total, the star system contains seven planets and one moon. No asteroids or comets.

ESNS Russel will remain in-system and scout for minerals or possible aliens.
