Since there already were one for armies and one for divisions, there needs to be one for individuals.

I nominate Simo Häyhä, the best sniper ever, with over 500 kills during winter war.

Well, maybe not the toughest individual but someone though enough is surely Roza Shanina. She was a sniper and a senior sergeant in the red army and served in WW2. She is credited with 54 kills and received the medal of the Order of Glory 2nd class and 3rd class.

Hans Ulrich Rudel:

The Knight's Cross with Golden Oakleaves, Swords and Diamonds was the highest single grade of the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross, and was awarded only once during WWII - an exception to the rule for this award which was only to be awarded 12 times once WWII ended. It was awarded to Hans Ulrich Rudel in honor of his unrivaled heroism as a Luftwaffe Stuka pilot. Rudel was responsible for the destruction of 530 Soviet tanks, enough tanks for five complete Soviet Tank Corps! He also destroyed 150 anti-aircraft and anti-tank positions, 800 motor vehicles, the Soviet Battleship Marat, a Soviet Cruiser, a Soviet Destroyer, 70 Soviet landing craft, and numerous bridges and bunkers. He also heavily damaged another Soviet Battleship, the October Revolution. Rudel flew 2,530 combat missions, claimed 11 air victories in his Stuka, and was shot down 30 times.

hmm 2530/(4*365)=1,7..considering he was shot down so many times he must have been wounded or MIA a lot, so he'd propable fly at least 2-3 sorties a day, propably more. That's one tough motherf*cker. Wonder if he ever slept :D

I like American film actor Sterling Hayden (best known as General Jack Ripper in Dr. Strangelove). He was a member of the OSS during World War II, and was parachuted into Yugoslavia to aid the resistance there.

Probably not the toughest soldier ever, but he was one of the few "tough guy" actors who was actually a tough guy.

What about Michael Wittman, i beleive he was the nr 1 tank ace from the entire war.

This is numbers i found.

- 141 tanks,
- 132 antitank guns.

And considering everything he met could kill or harm him it is a good job. In comparisation to the Stuka :)

I'd say Otto Skorzeny.
He fought in France, the Netherlands, Yugoslavia, Russia as part of the SS.
He then became leader of the German commandos and rescued Mussolini from the Apennine mountains, organised a coup in Hungary and led the fake German-US troops in the Ardennes offensive. And he did this in his mid to late thirties.

During the later part of his career, he also had a fake leg.

My nomonation would be my grandmother's last husband. He was captured in the Phillippeans in 1942. Did the death march, and spent his whole war in a POW camp. Told me he weighted only 98 pounds when he was freed and spent a good part of his time in northern island in a copper mine.

That a lot of dead people, but surely a lot of machine gunners could match it? Also, how tough is it to kill someone at 500 m range?

I guess the best place to look for this kind of person would be in the Soviet penal divisions. Anyone who survive long in one of them must be tough

How about that Japanese soldier who went to the war in 1941 and returned to Japan in 1974 or something like that. Someone who lives 30 years in jungle is definately a tough individual. I don´t remember his name but I hope that someone remembers.
