Chapter 30: Dead Man’s Valley (1592-1595)

With growing anger and resentment towards the Elysian Empire following their incredibly successful invasion of two major European powers, a growing sense of unity was among the Old World out of fears that they could become the next target. As one simple league of alliances were signed in Europe to contain Elysian expansion, another was formed by Elysia to counteract the growing distrust. Emperor Alexios, feeling satisfied with current expansion in Europe, withdrew all matters back onto Elysium proper and worked to calm the growing anger towards the Empire.

After years of construction under Kykladian and Elysian led construction, the Panama Canal was close to completion with the last few miles still being constructed. Despite the enormous toll on the economy, resources and the lives of the workers themselves, the Senate officially seized the territory of Panama from Kykladia. Not wishing for the canal to be operated by what the Elysians perceived as a third-party interest, especially as it was an Elysian financed project, the territory of Panama and the Canal itself were to be incorporated under Imperial authority.

The royalty and the nobility of Kykladia were infuriated at the Elysians for having ‘stolen’ the canal. In compensation, the Empire would grant monetary concessions to Kykladia as well as giving them extraordinary privileges in using the canal after it is completed.

As tensions rose along Europe, an offer of friendship was extended to one of Elysia’s oldest allies, Great Britain. While having lost its colonial possessions, the British had maintained a period of isolation and focusing on domestic policies. When accepted the offer for an alliance, the British immediately accepted the friendly invitation and the alliance was grew to further discourage a growing coalition among Europe.

Apart of the coalition was Vinland, who had lost an enormous amount of territory in their first and most disastrous war against the Elysians. Acting incredibly hostile to the Empire, the Norsemen were now openly persecuting Christians within its borders. Although discouraged by Vinlandic law, this was still encouraged by many more elements in their society. The Konugur, infuriated by the Elysians aggressive attitude in Europe, issued a trade embargo on Elysian goods entering the north.

After over ten years of construction and the loss of countless lives and resources, the impossible was achieved. The idea of connecting two entire oceans, despite being separated by such little land, was seen as a distant dream. Nethertheless, Elysia achieved this dream through resilience and ingenuity. Like the great Appalachian Pathways before them, the Panama Canal would become a gateway and a monument to the fact that nothing is impossible for the Elysian Empire. With the completion of the canal, it would allow ships safe passage without the need to round Cape Horn and sail thousands of miles across the ocean. Seen and considered centuries ahead of its time, Elysia had changed the course of ships and history!

Such a monumental achievement did not come without controversy. Kykladian and Elysian project overseers were especially ruthless in the constitution of the canal and exploiting the lives of slaves and workers. When sections of the canal locks would break under pressure, crushing and drowning hundreds of slaves under the immense pressure of the water, overseers would immediately continue construction despite the tragic human costs. The poor soil and a consistent rainflow in Panama has made the ground foundations of the canal extremely poor to build upon, and in some points, terrain was incredibly mountainous and proved to be a consistent problem with construction. The rainy seasons turned the river into a raging torrent, and with dense jungle alive with venomous spiders, insects, and snakes, workers were cautious about traveling across the terrain with every step they took.

Tropical diseases would strike down thousands, and many would perish to yellow fever or malaria. Elysian health measures to contain diseases were ineffective due to the role of the mosquito. Conditions would be downplayed across Elysia and Kykladia to avoid recruitment problems, but a high mortality rate made it difficult to maintain an experienced workforce without the use of slave labor.

During the time of its construction, workers of the canal had seen abhorrent fatality rates. Over a hundred lives were reportedly lost every weak from diseases, accidents during construction or were simply caused by suicide due to conditions. During the time of construction of the Panama Canal, close to fifty thousand workers had perished during its construction. Many of these workers would be slaves, most of whom were prisoners of war captured after battles in Europe and the Old World, where they would be stripped of their belongings and travel in captivity on boat to Panama, where a majority of them would be worked to death should they survive the journey. The surviving slaves after the construction of the canal, would be set free. Iberian and Turkish slaves, a vast majority of these slaves, would call the Panama Canal as ‘Dead Man’s Valley’. Poor worker conditions, lack of medicine to combat the harsh terrain and tropical diseases and ruthlessly brutal overseers started to give the Panama Canal a new reputation. It was an achievement of human ingenuity built upon a river of blood.

It marked a new phase in the Elysian Empire’s life, a phase of maturity. The Empire was known for being surprisingly progressive in terms of civil liberties and rights among its citizens, but possessed a strong authoritarian government focused on expansion and domination. Elysia was much more ruthless to its enemies, and much kinder to its friends. Gone were the days of a more childlike Imperium, the Empire was changing and becoming more mature. Harmony would be replaced with Order, and the world will both praise and tremble under the great eagle of the Empire. The Empire, at long last, had lost its childish innocence.

The efforts conducted by Kykladian workers, project overseers and the many thousands who perished from tropical diseases were never forgotten. In commemoration for the successful completion of the Panama Canal, Emperor Alexios would travel to Panama in person and would officially open the Canal in person. To honour the lives of the workers and Kykladia, the Emperor humbly granted Kykladia to achieve history and allow them to sail through the completed canal for the first time.

Along the stalwart vassals of the Empire, Emperor Alexios would strengthen the Balkan Shield and grant the Slavic nations under March status, strengthening their defences. Bulgaria, the largest of the Balkan Shield and perhaps one of the most loyal, would be the first nation to follow suit.

Prior to being sighted by the Elysians decades later, European explorers had discovered the great eastern sea of the New World. Spanish explorers would coin the name of the ocean, as favourable winds helped the explorers sail across the southern tip of Retoria. The Ocean would be named ‘Mar Pacífico’, which would translate to ‘Peaceful Sea’ in Spanish and Portuguese. This name would be used by the Elysian Empire once they had made their way to the West.

With the decline of Portugal and Spain, exploration efforts conducted across the Pacific were of low importance to the Iberians. The Elysian Empire, upon arriving on the western sea, would spend decades extensively exploring the Pacific Ocean and the great ocean sea. Elysian explorers would, by 1592, make first sighting an archipelago in the centre of the vast ocean. In an area known as Hawaii, upon which the indigenous peoples would name after a legendary figure in their ancient legend. Due to its central location on the island, the Empire immediately jumped on the opportunity to settle in the central island of the region, keenly interested in exploring what appeared to be an extremely vast ocean.

In retaliation for the trade embargo by the Althing of Vinland, the Empire would officially implement their own embargo in retaliation for a ‘punitive offence’. Emperor Alexios, in a fiery speech to the Senate, accused the Konugur of wanting to sacrifice the wellbeing of his own people simply because he wished to pick a fight against a superior enemy. Alexios would declare the current Konugur as ‘Criminally insane as their Mad King”.

In the summer season of the early 1590’s, an unexpectedly warmer season had caused food shortages in parts of the nation due to a lack of viable crops. Some Elysians had questioned trade policies that prevented the imports of more vital goods, and people called for barriers to be relaxed. Emperor Alexios, despite trying his hardest to ensure that the Empire was completely self-sufficient with basic resources, found that the regions that produced the most food in the Empire was some of the regions that were most affected by famine. The Imperial Family would speak upon the capital to calm down the commoners, speaking in that in times of need, lives were more important than politics. The Empire would then receive aid from their exarchs and allies in the Old World, and Elysia would be forever faithful.

With the northern frontiers being established, the remaining barbaroi territories of the great plains were quickly being conquered by the growing Empire. The Pawnee would be one of the tribes that would fall to Elysia, where they would be conquered and integrated.

Across centuries, coffee had been a product grown and exported from Yemen and Ethiopia. But just as silk had once traveled west along the trade routes, the coffee plant came to be in possession by French merchants where it would thrive under the tropical conditions of French Columbia. Yemen’s strong grip over the coffee trade, which the distant people of the land had gone to great lengths to prevent anyone from taking the plant across their borders, had now lost one of their major monopolies.

In 1594, cartographers and explorers in the Old World would present interesting information about the state of the world. In the lands of the Islamic World, the previously thought declining Mamluk Sultanate had seen a great resurgence and was hard in trying to unite Arabia under their rule in Cairo, which had flourished and became one of the world's largest cities. Persia had never truly reunited in the power vacuum caused the collapse of the Timurid Empire, and Ethiopia had been experiencing an golden age where their powerful rule had safeguarded Christianity in Africa.

To the incredibly wealthy lands of India, a majority of the subcontinent was united by the two large superpowers of the region, the Hindu Vijayanagara Empire and the Islamic Bengal Sultanate. While many minor independent kingdoms existed, the fate of India largely rested between the clash of the two Indian giants.

In 1594, Elysian explorers would sail far towards the east in an attempt to discover and locate a sea-route to China. Instead of finding China, Elysian explorers would sail towards the lands of Japan. Fractured yet strong, Elysian explorers were driven away by the fiercely isolationist Ashikaga Japanese Shogunate and its manys subjects.

Improvements in artillery maneuverability took place during a military reform, with the Military Council working on standardizing the size and weight of artillery pieces for more effective bombardment.

As the Elysian army had demonstrated itself well against the armies of Europe, recent advancements in military technology in the areas of guns and cannons had put the Empire at a disadvantage. Embracing the arts of European warfare and gunpowder, the Empire was working hard on adopting the flintlock musket and perfecting it. In the end, a unique Elysian design was created while using European templates.

Muskets used by the rank and file of the Elysian army had been modified to fire a smaller-calibre yet longer-ranged shot. Due to the nature of the firearms themselves, the equipment used to produce the firearms is locally produced and is much cheaper than importing weapons from Europe. With the entire army under a period of reform, Elysian Style Muskets would be embraced by the Empire, and would prove to be lethal in future conflicts.

With cooperative colonization of the lands of Hawaii, the area would become the most important Elysian territory in the entire Pacific Ocean due to its central geographic location. Hawaii would become strategically significant in time simply because of its location, and would become the center administrative region for the vast island territories of the Pacific.

With the Panama Canal completed, the world was changing rapidly. With a large portion of the world revealed to the Empire, many wondered where the destiny of the Empire would take them. Some argued that Europe was a priority, while some were entranced by the distant riches of Asia. In time, as Europe was cooling down from Elysian aggression, Elysia would take the fight to the north once more...

There is only room for one nation in Elysia.

It is the natural Order of things. As they say, the days of Harmony are long since passed.

Surely Vinland will come falling down once the next war is near its end, when Vinland loses its capital there will be few left to take or to uphold the Vinlandic nation as a whole.

Chapter 31: The Blood Eagle (1595-1600)

With the Empire preoccupied with exploring the great oceans of the East and rediscovering the rest of the world, Imperial efforts were concentrated on maximizing the use of the newly built Panama Canal. As Europe started to unite against the Empire, their fears disappeared as the Elysians didn’t wish to fight against a European menace, and started to resume back to focusing onto their affairs. While the Old World would relax for now, Vinland was provoking the Elysian Empire as much as they possibly could.

Emperor Alexios was very careful in the delicate balancing act that was Elysian diplomacy, with hostile powers seemingly everywhere. He was careful in making sure that Elysian interests were not directly harmed by this setback, as the Empire and its people always came first. Some of the dynatoi and senators took the opportunity to attack the Emperor for his lack of efficient diplomacy, believing that Elysia was doing nothing and not taking advantage of their enemies misfortune. The Emperor would remind the more warhawkish elements of the Empire that, with tensions as high as they are, it was a time of recovery from the violent wars in the region and that any wrong move could spell disaster.

In 1595, Utrecht formally joined into the greater realm of the Netherlands, and the Low Countries were united under Dutch rule. While the Netherlands were threatened to the south by an increasingly expensive French kingdom, they were still formally apart of the Holy Roman Empire. Any major conflict between France and the Habsburgs would, likely, occur for the sovereignty of the Netherlands.

With a means of dealing with the famine that had struck the Empire for the past several years, the Imperial administration worked alongside the Emporoi in distributing food to the starving people of Elysia. In doing so, further cooperation occured within the Merchant class and the merchant class and the administration would solve the problems of combating smuggling.

With the Great Plains to the far east settled, Barbaroi councils had petitioned for the right to settle in the frontier. While cautious about the council's gaining influence in the vast region, the Empire trusted native settlers to make their new home in the region. The Empire welcomed both Native and Elysian settlers onto the plains, as all help is appreciated.

A priest within the ecclesiarchy had been discovered embezzling funds that were meant for renovations for a significant church along the Eastern coast. Normally, such a crime would result in the immediate execution of the guilty subject. However, as the victim is a holy man who had sincerely repented, Elysian authorities were dumbfounded on how to approach the matter. The matter would not be resolved until the Eccumencial Patriarch would officially step into the ordeal, stating that it would be wiser for the Church to deal with their own.

While Elysia had not ventured into China yet, a sizable contingent of European traders had been established in the region for quite some time. The demand for Chinese porcelain had skyrocketed, and the only payment that was accepted in China was gold or silver. Noticing these demands, Elysian merchants started to wonder about how truly wealthy the lands of Asia must have been to gathered such attention from Europe.

From Hesperian, a collective Elysian exploration fleet would leave from Hesperidia on a quest to find a western sea route to the fabled rich islands and cities of the west, led by expert explorer, Phocas Phrangopoulos. Departing from the port of Chumash in January 1596, the Elysian fleet would consist of five large ships built for the exploration, manned by 300 sailors. The ship would travel across the vast pacific ocean, packed with provisions, and would only stop when necessary.

Phocas Phrangopoulos (1555-1597). Inspired by the ventures of Pytheas Acominatus, Phocas would unfortunately never live to see the impact of his journey

During the voyage, Phrangopoulos would be killed from a wound suffered by a poison arrow after assisting a local tribal chief conquer a rival tribe. Attrition would take its toll onto the ships, and once supplies started to run out, the ships themselves were falling apart. By the time that the ships would return to Elysian waters, only one ship out of the five that departed would survive, with a surviving crew of twenty men. Once it had arrived in a Kykladian port almost two years later, the ship became the very first ship to circumnavigate the world, adding another impressive achievement for the Empire.

Raids conducted by Vinlandic pirates had been occuring ever since Elysia and the original Vinlandic kingdoms established contact with one another. While originally a nuisance, growing tensions with Vinland had led naval conflict between the two nations to become more and more dangerous. One particular raid struck close to the heart of the Empire, sacking the region. Vinlandic raiders, particularly the viking leadership, focused on capturing innocent civilians from the provinces. Entire christian families were captured and sailed to the north and became slaves for the heathen elites.

This proved to be the last straw for the Elysians, as it became apparent that Vinland bullying the Elysian Empire into submission was not going to work. Watching diplomatic relations between Vinland and the European powers falter, Emperor Alexios noticed that they had left a coalition against them. This would prove to be a fatal mistake.

A new war was claimed for the Empire, and with Vinland completely lacking any friendship from Christian Europe, war was immediately declared for the north. The objective of the war was not to kill the norsemen with a piercing blow to the heart, just slit their throat.

Basil I Palaiologos. While perceived as a cowardly man, Basil I was a sharp minded patron of the arts who loved painting.
Emperor Alexios would never see the outcome of the war, which would prove to be his final official act as Emperor. Emperor Alexios I would die on September 13th 1598 from heart failure, at the age of sixty five, the last of the children of Alexandros the Magnificent. Alexios’s only son, Basil I, would ascend to the throne shortly before his fortieth birthday.

The first official battle of the war would take place in the frozen plain of Koronaborg, and would prove to be one of the greatest upsets in Vinlandic history. The Konungur himself led an impressive army and was, politically, extremely hostile of the aggressive leadership of the previous Emperor. Unfortunately, Vinland hadn’t prepared for the brilliant military leadership of the Empire’s finest generals and their equally brilliant troops, who were armed to the teeth and itching for a fight.

Koronaborg would prove to be a disaster for Vinland. Simply unprepared, and largely made up of calvary, the entire Vinlandic army was simply obliterated by Elysia. The Konungur, who had attempted a retreat once the northerners were losing the battle, was captured by quick-minded soldiers who killed the Konungur’s horse while he was attempting to flee. He would be captured and placed under captivity for the remainder of the war, as Elysian Thema stormed along the northern frontier.

With an easy Elysian victory, Vinland had lost another embarrassing war against the Imperial Eagle of the south. A majority of the Vinlandic south was ceded to the Empire, leaving the official borders close to the capital of Vinoss. The Konugur, expecting no mercy from the Elysians, was suddenly released after the peace negotiations under royal escort, yet as a disgraced man rather than a proud leader.

With another addition to the Imperial territories, the Elysian Orthodox of the new territories praised the Empire in liberating the faithful northerners. As with Thorfinn Bay, a new Patriarchate of Pergiae was established in the southern Vinlandic territories to help the region with their spiritual needs and guidance.

With the colony of Hawaii being completed, the Empire pursued a policy of settling the many many islands of the Pacific Ocean for their strategic value. With the territories of the north of Elysium being incredibly desolate and seen as of little value, Emperor Basil seen a tremendous amount of value in the Pacific Ocean, even going as far as to claim the pacific as Elysia’s “Mare Nostrum”. Elysia’s own pacific sea.

With foundations for the Iberian Exarch established, most of the once Catholic population of Hispania renounced the Papacy and converted to Elysian Orthodoxy. As a sense of unity had united the once fractured and divided Iberian cultures of the south, the north had fallen into chaos.

With goods being moved from continent to continent, as long with new trade routes being discovered, all trade in the world was now becoming apart of a greater world network. With the discovery of Elysium and Retoria, sea routes across Africa and the crossing of the Pacific, all trade networks are being connected together into one intercontinental network. It might not have started just yet, but the seeds of the beginning of a truly global economy had been sown, and time will tell where the next century would take the Empire.

In a single century, the Elysian nation had crossed from one sea to another. From discovering an ocean to navigating the world. From a prideful Empire making their way from the Eastern Coast onto the Western Coast, and the accomplishments of the Empire were making Elysia seen in envious eyes in every court in Europe. The world was rapidly changing, and so was the nature of the Elysian Empire. In a hundred years, Elysia went from a regional power that was rather insignificant in the global world to a vast and powerful Empire so powerful and glorious that European monarchs bent their knee to the master of the new world.

In a single century, Elysia changed the world. For the next century, the sky was limit...

Chapter 31.5: In Memoriam/Alexios I
Alexios I Palaiologos
Lived: April 26th 1533 - September 13th 1598
Emperor of Elysia: 1570 - 1598

An Emperor worthy of the glory capable of living up to his father’s, Alexios would be remembered as the Elysian Emperor who set the strong foundations for a second era of Elysian greatness across the Empire. A militaristic Emperor who favoured expansion, the Empire would humiliate the European and Islamic powers of the Mediterranean, while strengthening the Empire across its vast territories. Alexios would best be remembered as the Emperor who seized the Pillars of Hercules and the Strait of Marmara, along with the Panama Canal being built in his reign.

As the younger son of Emperor Alexandros, Alexios was named after the legendary Byzantine Emperor, Alexios Kommenos. As a child, he was incredibly quiet and preferred solitary environments, unlike his titan of an older brother Tiveros. This would change as he grew older, sharing some qualities from his father Alexios. While not exactly like him in every aspect, Alexios was much more diplomatic with his means on expansion. While his father was ruthless in his drive for the betterment of the realm, Alexios was more controlled and approached the situations with more of a clear conscience and control.

With his ascension on the throne, the new Emperor would immediately start to counter the growing Iberian threat, resoundingly causing the Kingdom of Spain slide into a slow destruction as it lost their Italian holdings, while also seizing the Iberian islands in the Atlantic. Importantly, the seizure of the Pillars of Hercules would secure an Elysian entrance into the Mediterranean and helped take advantage of the self-destructing Spanish kingdom. Later wars would result for an Elysian entry into Anatolia, leading to the start of a period of what is set to be long reclamation wars for Asia Minor against the Turk. Hellenic reconquest of Anatolia would be celebrated among Byzantine-esc traditions for what was praised to be the growing dominance of Christ in the East.

What was previously unexpected was the conquest of vast portions of the the northern realms of Vinland, to which the hostile norsemen were embarrassed twice in a row. While the Emperor would not live to see the results of the second war, the Empire’s territory would grow to encompass the entirety of Thorfinn Bay and a sizeable area of Southern Vinland. Originally friends in the beginning, Vinland and Elysia had become bitter enemies. But with the total defeat in two major conflicts, it only signalled the beginning of the end of the Vinlandic realm and Norsedom.

Domestically, the Empire had accomplished many significant achievements during Alexios’s reign. With the completion of the Panama Canal of the south, it immediately became known as one of the wonders of the new world and a shining example of Elysian ingenuity. To the north, the economy of the Empire had flourished, and the Empire had ventured into the vast openness of the Pacific Ocean and was drawn towards the riches of Asia. The First Circumnavigation of the world had occurred during the reign of Alexios, and Elysian prestige further continued to climb.

Shortly before that turn of the century, Emperor Alexios died from heart failure on September 13th 1598 at the age of sixty five. Leaving a lasting legacy behind, Emperor Alexios reign was seen as the end of the Elysian golden-age and the beginning of the ‘Second Era’ of the Empire. He would be succeeded by his son, Basil. Emperor Alexios would be buried in the capital of Nea Konstantinopolis, the last of the Golden Age Emperors.

Just hope they won't become too proud .

Well, there was never any doubt about the result of a war with Vinland.

Just caught up, looking forward to seeing what, Elysia does next.

State of the Empire: 1600
State of the Empire: 1600

A hundred years of prosperity and expansion had transformed the Empire, and Imperial society as a whole, into something much greater. The Elysian Eagle had spread its wings. With the Imperial Census of 1600 completed, the new Elysian Emperor Basil I was presented with the new census and like his predecessors before him, wanted to know the capabilities of the Empire.

From sea to shining sea, the Empire ruled the civilized lands of the East and West. A century of explosive growth had seen the Empire’s size and population grow rapidly. With a couple of million citizens now under Imperial domain, the frontier to the northwest was ignored for now. Instead, a more attractive alternate existed within the islands of the Pacific Ocean. With Emperor Manuel speaking about the Mare Nostrum becoming the “Mare Nostrum” of Elysia, expansion efforts were currently focused on securing the bounty of islands in the pacific, and slowly taming the northerners of Vinland for their arrogance.

Imperial government, since the reformations undertaken by Emperor Manuel almost a century ago, had been characterised by the strength of the Elysian Senate and its Emperor. Since this reformation, the Empire was well known across Europe for its incredibly strong and stable Imperial government. With the traditions of the senate being retained from the times of Rome, the Senatorial Empire operated on both republican and monarchist characteristics and utilize them to its fullest extent.

While incredibly prosperous in its own right, the Empire had been overspending within the military in order to maintain their large presence in Europe, which was focused on protecting and aiding the Exarch states. Once conditions stabilized in Europe to safe-levels and the Exarchs were able to protect themselves, which could be many years away, the Empire couldn’t utilize the economy to the best of their ability.

All trade markets on the continent of Elysium was dominated by the Empire. Elysia held a monopoly on the goods that came from the continent which were sought after in Europe, such as Elysian silk. Although Vinland and Spartania had some involvement in the matters of trade, they couldn’t even come close to the levels that Elysia held over the market.

The Elysian army and navy, was, in a controversial aspect, the most powerful military in the world. Over a century of drilling had transformed the Elysian military from a drafted military to a professional standing army with intense and brutal training conditions comparable to the Legionaries of Ancient Rome. The advantages of new military technology had been largely responsible for Elysia to secure their dominance on the continent, as native armies were simply useless to combat a Thema. In order to maintain this dominance, the Empire must pay an extremely heavy price to finance the military.

Elysification of the continent was extremely effective as the Empire’s influence was felt from coast to coast. The Elysian Language, either as a main tongue, secondary language or a minority language, was the dominant language in the new world with immense cultural influence. Despite its regional dialects, the language had remained the same from its traditional Hellenic origins, but had diverged enough from the standard Hellenic that it was considered a separate language in its own right. Native languages, except in some isolated pockets around the Empire, were virtually extinct as many natives embraced the Elysian language after decades of integration.

As a culture, Elysia was unique in its very own right. It had a Hellenic heart but a Roman soul. Philosophers both from Europe and Elysia remarked on how on a societal aspect, Elysian culture shared more common characteristics Rome rather than Greek, and Elysia had been embracing this for quite some time. In comparison to the Spartan-esc hybrid culture of Spartania, Elysian culture was a hybrid culture that embraced the best of Hellenic and Roman culture.

During the previous century, the Empire had gained plenty of loyal subjects in both Europe and Elysium. With the establishment of the Exarchs and the Balkan shield, entire nations were now serving the Emperor and Elysia. Either by willingly wanting to serve the Empire for a greater good, protection, or any other means. With such loyal subjects, it was the duty of every Elysian monarch to show compassion to the growing realm.

Nea Konstantinopolis, the fabulously wealthy capital of the vast Imperium, had exploded in population within the previous hundred years. In part due to the population policies enacted by the Empire, drastically improved standards of living and a stable climate, the capital now had a population of just over 300,000 inhabitants. Interestingly, immigrants from Europe and elsewhere in the old world had slowly started to immigrate to the Empire, wishing to make new lives and opportunities in the crown jewel of of Elysium

From sea to sea, loyal allies and subjects and a rapidly growing nation, the next century presented the opportunities for the Empire to shine to levels that had it never reached before. The Golden Age of Elysia, for the time being, was over. The Empire had matured and was now entering a new phase of its life, where both the East and the West were now well within the possibility of Elysian rule. The last century was an Elysian century. The 17th century was to be a century of miracles.

Long live the Empire

Claiming the entire Pacific Ocean as their "Mare Nostrum" is a lofty ambition indeed. Let's hope the Empire doesn't suffer the fate of Icarus in making that claim a reality.

Elysia's "Roman soul" isn't too surprising -- the Emperors at Constantinople never did relinquish their claim to being the legitimate continuation of the Roman Empire, and while the New World might have provided the Elysians with a fresh slate, I'd imagine they still think of themselves as the "heirs of Rome" in a real sense.

Spartania has been awfully quiet lately...

Don't worry. Spartania has been quiet for a reason! ;)

The Empire's been enjoying Pax Elysia for awhile now, but I can't help but think, it's only inevitable that the Empire's gonna end up with their own Commodus or Alexandros Komnenos at some point

This Elysia has never lacked in ambition.
