So after playing for about 50 hours so far, I must say I enjoy the game. However there are some things that I feel are the most pressing that are missing that should really be in a 4x game. I shall list them here as feedback.
First and most pressing, the start new game options. The options for a new playthrough are so barebones its not funny. Maybe I have been spoiled from playing Distant Worlds in the past, but I really feel there should be many more options here. It's the main gripe I have with Stellaris. The following options should imho be there:
- Set the amount of resources in the galaxy
- Set the amount of habitable planets in the galaxy
- Set the cost of research
- Set the cost & upkeep of ships & stations
- Set the amount of anomalies/space monsters/events
Then, into the game itself:
- After you vassalize another empire, there should be many more diplomatic options. I vassalized a rival empire, the Shrek Imperium, and they just non-stop send me insults and refused any and all trade agreements. Also, the only diplomatic options I had were to give/demand credits/minerals, to cede a planet to them (but not to claim one) and the research agreement. Imho there should be more options to influence their actions, including an option to threaten them to agree. If they refuse anyway, that should be a declaration of war. After all they are subjugated vassals not valued allies. Generally there should be more here to direct your vassals.
- The AI empires do not react to the various endgame events. I assume this is a bug or oversight, but its completely immersion breaking.
- The (battle) AI is generally stupid. You can win any war by doing the following: Send in a small taskforce of speedy corvettes. All the AI fleets in the system will give chase. Send them on a merry chase away from valuable targets like the planet. Then send in your main fleet to attack their planet. The AI will not divert any of their fleets from chasing the 3 corvettes to attack your main fleet bombing their world.
- Defense Stations should be upgradeable! It's so annoying that you can't, especially the 1 per ruler one as when you demolish it you can't rebuild it.
- Science ships should be able to scan any and all planets that are known to you but haven't been scanned by you yet. In the mid-game, there is barely anything to discover due to the tech that makes planets within another empire's territory known to you. I never managed to finish the precursor quest due to this in any of my games.
Those are my main issues, thanks for reading!
