Is there any point in giving a Holy Order land (whether through the event or otherwise) besides the one-time piety boost? They are never willing to accept my vassalization offer because I am not their de jure liege, even when I give them land in my de jure kingdom.

I don't understand. How did they get a holy order to accept vassalisation? With a Basque (Iberian) HRE and maxed relations I still cannot get a Castillian (Iberian) Knights Templar to accept vassalisation. They say I am the wrong culture even though we are in the same culture group. I can't imagine a Mongol being able to overcome that penalty in any way with a German Grand-Master. Something is broken for this to happen and me to never be able to vassalise.

I dont know how the horde does this. You can do it if you have given them land and invite someone with a claim on the title of the order and then push this title. He then becomes the grandmaster and your vassal.

In my games they usually establish themselves with a county or two in the Balkans and then a series of baronies. I fought them and the Poles as they joined a defensive pact against me, the Teutons raised 12K of their own troops. So not an irrelevant force in my book.

About vassalization: I havent tried the Teutons, and it has been a while with the spanish orders and the Templars/Hospitallars, but they dont accept through diplomatic options, but through the intrigue tap, if you have the correct de jure land (I have no clue what that is for the Teutons).

On a related note of wonky religious land grant design - I like to play as Miaphysites which means i try to get Alexandria, holy site and seat of the pope. He is automagically granted the bishophric if it's held by a miaphysite, which is great for moral authority as it's an extra +10 'pope controls holy site'. But if you give the county to a vassal they'll repeatedly attack their own religious head in a holdings war - which of course he'll only get back via the automated script once they've given it to a bishop.

How about adding a massive piety cost to attacking your own holy orders/religious heads, both initial and per month as happens with Muslim-on-Muslim? That would probably discourage the AI.
