What is that... We sense sentience behind it. Investigate it. The Queen sent her orders as Seeker 2 entered the system. A.. Cloud, there was no other word for it, was there, near the central star, yet this cloud felt alive. There was discharge to be seen within it. As Seeker 2 approached the cloud, the Queen felt a hostile intent. Ordering the ship to evade, she was relieved to see a bolt of energy pass down the side. The shields took the glancing force as it passed by. Leave the system. Honnam Ter leads nowhere else. We can investigate it another time. What an interesting creature...

Settle the ship at this point. It has been calculated as the best spot. We need this colony up and running in order to aid in the stockpile of resources. The Queen was satisfied that all was well. There was a general excitement throughout the Hive. A new world has been claimed for the Hive! Alpha Colony will soon be up and running. As the ship touched down, the experiences of this new, alien world washed over all. Yes, the Vhemm and Caravaneers are certainly poorer for their singular natures. in the Hive, all experiences were shared and this one was relished.

The first Tchikenthian Colony!

We must break out of these systems if we are to continue to expand. We know little about the fleets of the Vhemm, and our defences are still building up. Reinforce the Ravenous Swarm, send them out to tackle the metallic drone swarms. Orders passed, the Queen looked through the eyes of her drones building up the Border Station defences. Such a thing had never been undertaken before and care was being taken to ensure these fortifications would stand up to the test when the time came. We have developed some new defences. Whilst we have previously looked upon our stations for research or mining, there is ample space on them to be fitted with the weaponry we would normally reserve for our ships. We call these Defence Stations. They can reinforce the Border Stations and aid them in holding off the enemy. Science Drone 32 relayed the schematics that they had been working on. Yes, older technology could be repurposed. But would it be enough? These will suffice for the short term. Ensure we can upgrade the weaponry on them. Is there anything else? She enquired. The autonomous drones were such a boon to the Hive, but the relinquishment of some of her hold over them that made them so good frustrated her at times. Yes. We are working on plans that will allow us to build up our stations. This will make them stronger and give us the opportunity to further specialise them. We call them Starholds. Drone 32 replied. Very good. Continue the efforts.

The Ravenous Swarm was entering the system. The metal drones, noticing their arrival, swung towards them, spreading out into an attack pattern. Press forward. Evade and attack. We cannot afford to lose too many ships in this endeavour. Naval Drone 1 acknowledged. Passing his commands to the fleet, the corvettes surged forward. Firing all their weapons at the metal drones, they settled into a circling attack pattern, weaving in and out of range to attack and avoid the counter-attacks. A sharp pain knifed through the Queen's thoughts as the connection with the drones on one of the ships was severed. The explosion seen through Naval Drone 1's eyes told her what happened. The last of the drones were destroyed shortly afterwards. One loss. Not a bad start to this campaign. Send in Seeker 1. Investigate the remains, there may be something we can use. The add the system to the Hive's territory. Push forward in the explorations.

upload_2018-12-16_4-13-5.png

The first strike at the drones!

We are entering the system now. Sensors coming up... Sensors show more drones in this system. We are retreating. Seeker one left the system. It appears this area of space has an infestation of these metal drones. No matter. Naval Drone 1. Reinforce and repair the fleet. Clear out these contraptions. We will investigate expanding the fleet. War is coming, and we cannot have the fleet off on the other side of our territory when it does. We will increase our production and support lines and that will allow us to have more ships. Sisters, see to it. The Hive will prepare for war!

Might be the less construction of buildings you're doing, though also, you've got a heck of a lot more minerals (relatively speaking) in space than I've gotten in 2.2, especially at your stage.
I often find it to be fairly mineral rich. Maybe I get lucky? Though this is on Ensign difficulty. If you play at a higher level of difficulty that could have an effect and explain why?

In my first playthrough minerals were quite abundant early on, but in the mid-late game as I have tried to ramp up alloy production and with massively increased consumer goods I often find I need to add an infusion from the market.

We have designed something new to aid us in our effort to conquer those Vhemm. We call it a Destroyer. The fleet design team chittered excitedly. The Science division have researched the required technology and the design stands ready to be built. The Queen sent a wave of happiness. Yes. This is exactly what is needed. Larger ships can bring more powerful weapons to bear against the enemy. Make it so. Designate this new class as Sting class and turn them towards our enemy. The time for war grows ever closer and we would have the fleet ready!

We have made an extraordinary find! We finally pieced it together. We followed the leads and can now lay claim to the Irassian Homeworld! It will lie within our borders once we have secured the system.
The excitement was threaded throughout the connection with Seeker 1. Our just rewards for such efforts. We will claim this for the Hive and turn whatever fortunes come with it towards the good of all.

The Precursor event did not last that long this time...

The Queen stirred. Her vision filled with the sights of the fleets on standby. She had grown another Naval Drone to support both the Border Stations. It is time. Those cowards hide away from us and ignore all provocation. Very well. We shall take the inevitable step. Open communications with the Vhemm. Soon, the Diplomatic Drone relayed the communication coming through on the 'screen'. Such primitive creatures, unable to pass simple images and messages via the synapse, the Queen mused to herself and her sisters. Vhemm. The time has come to end this. You cower behind your borders, yet dare to lay claim to Tchikenthi space! The Hive will tolerate this no longer. Prepare yourselves well, for the Swarms are coming for you all! She ordered the message cut off before they could reply. Those strange noises irritated her and their reply was unnecessary anyway. War didn't require the other sides agreement after all. Send out the Swarms. We will initiate the attack in the Nodro system. Take their base there. We want to provoke a counter attack and force them to come to us.

The Hive moves to war...

We have investigated the possibility of moving outside of the starlanes. We believe we may be on to something, however, at this stage it is highly experimental. We speculate that we could move a single ship out of the standard starlanes and 'jump' it to another system. This is a very dangerous procedure, however. We recommend it is only used to move to systems we know, else accidents could occur. Science Drone 32 reported, his uncertainty evident. Yes, this was a step in the right direction, though not on the scale required. Still... Very well. We shall allow our Seeker vessels to be equipped with the technology. Their specialist knowledge will aid us in furthering this technology. The Queen replied. She was somewhat distracted. In order to maintain control over her sisters, she had ensured that only she had access to the Royal Serum. As a result her sisters faced their own mortality for the first time. Beta Queen 1, who had administrated over the growing Hive, was now sick and dying. A replacement Beta Queen would be required. Each Queen had developed certain... traits, as a result of their semi-autonomous natures. The Queen knew she would have to order a replacement soon. Sisters. I have decided. Beta Queen 4, you shall administer the Hive when Beta Queen 1 returns to the biosphere. The Hive will be strengthened by her nutrients! She received acknowledgement from all her sisters. The war with the Vhemm proceeded well, though even this threw up some surprises. There was a feeling emanating from them when they had taken the Nodro System. She sensed fear and what they had termed 'sadness' from those who they sent to the biosphere. Odd creatures, she mused. Why do they fear death? What is this sadness they feel over it? Beings are born and they die. In life or death, all serve the Hive. Maybe it is their individuality? Another flaw in their creation, it seems.

We are receiving a new communication. Another species is contacting us, having tracked our communications during our war with the Vhemm. Diplomatic Drone 47 opened its mind to the Queen. Greetings. We are the Tchikenthi Hive. Another species filled with anger, it seems. After some strange noises, translated into more sophisticated messaging by the Diplomatic Drone, the communication was cut short. The Queen sighed. Are there no reasonable beings in this galaxy? Are all filled with this fear and hatred? She mused. The Hive was a comfort, she decided. If all these others did not have the Hive, maybe that was the cause of their anger. A sense of... loneliness? Yes, that was what that Vhemm prisoner felt. Lonely and hopeless. A shame. He aided the Hive in the end, his nutrients powering the drones in the mines. I wonder if these Quepta are just as nutritious? The Queen queried to herself... Enough distraction, there is a war on.

upload_2018-12-16_15-53-5.png

We also met the Ganlarev Regime shortly afterwards, though the screenshot failed. More of the same. Angry, lonely beings without the comfort of the Hive...

Seeker 2 slid into the system and activated the sensors. A strange sight was relayed back to the Queen. A series of crystaline meteors were evenly spread throughout the system. There was something else, a sense of... No, the Queen couldn't quite catch it. Something wasn't right. The asteroids are all rich in minerals. Seeker 2 reported. Very well. Begin mining, but keep sensors alert. There's something about this system...

upload_2018-12-16_16-10-10.png

Strange crystal covered meteors...

They refuse to take the bait. Very well. Move in and take the Xir system. The Queen passed her commands to the Naval Drones. The alloy problem remained an issue, particularly with repairs from battles draining resources. Despite this, they had begun production of a third fleet. The starlanes within Vhemm space allowed the Hive to split their territory, cutting off portions of it from support. The third Swarm would then carve through those sections. As the Swarms entered the Xir system, the Queen focused her attention. Ah, at last! She had found their fleet. Engage that fleet! She ordered, quickly and simply, trusting in the skills bred into each Naval Drone. The battle went well and was soon in favour of the Hive, as was expected. However, many of the Vhemm ships chose to run, escaping from the destruction. The Swarms had also suffered in the engagement. Withdraw the Swarms. We have new sensor technology to be equipped on the fleets. We have secured this system for now. Renegade, hold the line.

upload_2018-12-16_16-7-2.png

The Hive wins more space..

The Queen focused on Renegade, her anger coming to the fore All Naval Drones, get the Swarms back to Xir. Renegade is holding off the attack, but she will soon be overpowered. The Vhemm had managed to trick the Hive! Their fleet had used their escape to allow reinforcements to be brought up. Renegade held the system, but the Vhemm decided at that moment to attack. Just as the Stalking Swarm came to her aid, a shot managed to penetrate her armour. Renegade had fought well, but the shot was fatal. Renegade had fallen, her brave last stand giving the Swarms the time needed to reinforce and hold on to the system. The Hive would not be unprepared again...

Builder 1 reports that mining in the Abdrade system proceeds well. All stations are up and running. The Queen acknowledged Beta Queen 3's report. Yes, though I still do not like that system. There is a sense of something alive there, and yet we see nothing. Keep alert. The Queen replied. After getting the acknowledgement she turned her attention back to the peace offer. It was not the smashing victory she had hoped for, but it was a win all the same. A large swathe of new territory for the Hive. And peace would give them a chance to rebuild, to upgrade the now dated Swarms. Too much resource had been spent on this war. It was time to end it. We agree to the proposal. We will keep the territory won in battle. You may leave with your lives, miserable as they are, for now. She sent to the delegate from the Vhemm. Yes, it was time for a peace, of sorts. She had another look at the Abdrade system. Yes, there is definitely something... and it now feels stron... Wait, there... The stations are under attack. It seems as though those asteroids are alive, or at least protected! We will need to get the Swarms in there. Luckily, we now have peace with the Vhemm. Naval Drones, get ready to engage those creatures. We will need the resources of that system. The Hive does not fail. The Hive is victorious.

(Not actually come across this one before. Suffice to say, not a pleasant surprise!)

The state of the Galaxy. There is also the Automated Dreadnought near the top middle.

The Hive grows nicely. Nice to get Irassia so quickly.

seems like the Hive has its war well in hand thus far.

Truth be told, the Queen underestimates how tough the battles were... And then how much alloy was required to keep everything going! At one point the Stalking Swarm was being forced to wait for reinforcements as there wasn't enough alloy to queue them up... haha!

The Hive grows nicely. Nice to get Irassia so quickly.

Yeah, that was definitely a bonus! It has helped with research a lot and currently ahead of everyone (that I've met so far at least), which gives me a nice edge.

We have learnt much from our first war with another species. The Queen discussed with her sisters. We now know what the enemy uses for their ships. We will design to counteract it. She showed them the new designs, focused around a new weapon, called disruptors. This new weapon will help us in nullifying their shields and armour. Additionally, we have created a new corvette, the Pack-Class. This will focus on missiles and long range engagement. Finally, we have decided to put to use the weapon we gained from our first contact with the Caravaneers. The Orbital Trash Dispersal System. Whilst initially it was useful merely to get rid of those creatures, our scientists have reasoned that it could be used to attack a planet. We will test it on the Vhemm. Make no mistake, this peace is only temporary!

We have encountered an interesting anomaly. An orbital shipyard, heavily damaged. We believe it could be made to function again and could provide us with weapons to use against the enemy.
Seeker Drone 2 quickly relayed to the Queen. Interesting... We wonder who built it...? The Queen mused. Very well. Activate it and let's see what we can get out of it. A short while later, Builder 2 reported success in restoring the system to functionality, but it was short lived. The shipyard did produce 3 vessels, designated as the Raider Class. They would serve with the Swarms.

upload_2018-12-17_21-40-24.png

Always a good anomaly to get, I think!

We have maneuvered the Swarms into forward positions. The Vhemm territory is split into three sections. We have therefore divided our fleet accordingly. One will guard our way into the main objective, their nearest planets, whilst the other two take the lightly defended and isolated sections. Once those are secure the Swarms will pincer on to the Vhemm territory. We will take the fight to them and the Hive will be victorious! The Queen issued her instructions. All are to be prepared. The last war taught us much, and we must be ready to reinforce the Swarms at all times. We shall soon feed again on Vhemm flesh, my children! Happy that her orders were understood and seeing the Hive move to carry our her instructions she focused her attention on Science Drone 12. We have made some advances. Furthering our Star Bases even more, we now have the capability of building Star Fortresses. In addition, this allows us to enhance the Hive further. The extra space will allow us to put living spaces on them. These habitats, as we have come to call them, will allow the drones to be bred exclusively to live in the void, reducing the time required to modify them for our Star Bases and Swarms. The Queen sent her satisfaction. It would reduce time, allowing them to reinforce the drones in the Swarms. With the Hive's preparations for war nearing completion, any advantage was worth taking...

The Hive was ready. Open communications. Vhemm. The time has come once again for us to war. The Hive comes for you!. The Queen wasted no time in listening to the pitiful creatures. She could sense its fear already. Good. Let them fear us! Attack. Take those poorly defended systems! Her Naval Drones moved their Swarms into position. As they entered their respective systems, they were greeted with hastily arranged defences. It didn't matter. Nothing would stop the Swarms...

upload_2018-12-17_21-53-46.png

So this was the outbreak of war...

upload_2018-12-17_21-54-10.png

And this was around 2 months later... Suspicious they could build all those so quickly...

We have found something we have never encountered, or even considered! It is a planet, what we deem to be perfect for life! It is there and yet it is not there... There is something unusual about it! Seeker 2, in orbit around the planet, kept fading in and out. Whatever was affecting this planet was also affecting the synaptic link... Interesting... Secure that system. Whatever it is shall be for the Hive. We will strip away their defences in time and secure that planet.

upload_2018-12-17_21-59-0.png

I have never actually encountered this one, so looking forward to discovering it!

The war proceeds well. So far we have faced little resistance. The hastily erected defences do not stand up to the Swarms. We have yet to pin down their fleet, however. When we get close, they flee. Naval Drone 1 will need replacing. He was lost when attempting to pin down the enemy fleet, a lucky shot from one of their starbases managed to penetrate the engine space of his ship causing an explosion. Swarm-Class XVI was lost with all hands. So far that has been the only casualty of this war. Naval Drone 2 reported. Very good. We have another Naval Drone ready to take up position. They will be sent to the Swarm shortly. The Queen acknowledged. Yes, the war was proceeding well... If only they could catch up with that fleet! Still, the noose was tightening. Soon they would have nowhere to run...

upload_2018-12-17_22-4-20.png

So after securing the two splinter sections, the intention now is to pin their fleet down in the middle somewhere. So far the Vhemm aren't being accommodating!

Finally! Stalking Swarm entered the system and rushed to the other side. They had managed to surprise the Vhemm fleet and will now get their chance to crush them! The fight was short and bloody. Despite losing 2 Swarm-Class corvettes, Naval Drone 3 managed to keep up the pressure. Unfortunately much of their fleet initiated a successful emergency FTL escape, but the damage had been done. The Vhemm Fleet would not pose any threat for the rest of the war.

upload_2018-12-17_22-7-37.png

Finally managed to catch them!

We are receiving a new communication. Diplomatic Drone 328 relayed the message. This one felt different... Greetings. We are the Tchikenthi. The response this time was warm and friendly... It would seem not all the beings in this galaxy were angry! Though there was still no sense of unity behind them, they seemed a more gentle people. Still, time would tell if they would be of benefit or hindrance to the Hive.

upload_2018-12-17_22-10-27.png

Took a while, but these guys may want to be friends!

The Hive is victorious! The Vhemm are less than a shadow of their former selves and will be ripe for annihilation as soon as this new peace treaty is over. The Hive rejoiced! The newly conquered worlds will generate biomatter for a reasonable period of time, and open up areas for expansion. Yes, the Vhemm were still alive, but only for the short term. The peace would allow the Hive to secure its gains, to rebuild the Swarms with the new technology that comes so readily when at war. There are wonders out there yet to explore and new beings to tas.. to build relations with. Yes, there is such a galaxy yet to be seen. For now, though, the Hive is Victorious!

upload_2018-12-17_22-30-19.png

The state of the galaxy following the Seconf Tchikenthi-Vhemm war. The fact they surrendered yet live is disappointing... Still, we shall finish them next time...

(Additionally I installed a new mod, Gigastructural Engineering & More 2.2, so see what this has to offer. I will add it to the mods list at the beginning.)

The Hive grows and seems to like the taste of victory.

The Hive grows and seems to like the taste of victory.
Well, I mean, Victory is a rather delicious brew. I've found it tastes like a good, crisp Mountain Dew, myself.

We are losing resources. Additionally, drones on our new planets are... deviating from our will. Beta Queen 3, we entrust you with the governing of the new Hive planets in the Mound Sector. Beta Queen 6, you will govern the Nest Sector. We need to reduce this deviancy, it will not be tolerated. If we are unable to reduce the deviancy on these planets, others may follow. The deviants are to be returned to the biomass. We suspect that the issue stems from the undesirables that are inhabiting the planet, and they will soon be returned to the biomass. We will not allow any of the Vhemm to survive in this galaxy, much less our planets. Finally, it seems that the species we thought might be friendly is not. They have closed their borders to us and we have responded in kind. We will make an example of the Vhemm and if others still choose their path, then we shall make examples of them too! The Hive will not tolerate the level of distrust and insult we are currently receiving from these species! It is not all bad, however. Despite initial misgivings, we have agreed to not wage war with the Ganlarev Regime and have instead decided that, should either of us be attacked, we will come to each others aid. We shall see what comes of this. The Queen finished her discussions with her sisters. As the years have passed without them receiving any of the Royal Serum her sisters had become more subservient to her will. They now retained a level of autonomy barely above that of the other Autonomous Drones... It was interesting that the Queen now issued instructions when previously there was discussion.

upload_2018-12-18_19-51-14.png

Well... So much hope wasted. It seems nobody wants to be our foo... I mean, friends...

There are even more species in this galaxy. We have encountered a new race, called Republican Seban Systems. We will see how this relationship goes, but past experience tells us not to expect too much. We are decimating the remaining populations of Vhemm in our systems. We need to bring balance back to our resources. Our recent gains have overstretched our ability to produce energy and food. Those shall be our main priorities. The Queen finished her discussion with the Beta Queens. Shutting off her connection to them, she opened her view to all her territory. The drones were working hard for the continuation of the Hive. Yes, things were not going perfect, but they were going well. The Hive had yet to meet anyone that could match them in either technology or military might. Their silly individualism, this 'I' instead of a unified we... It stops them uniting and makes it easier to pick them apart...

upload_2018-12-18_20-15-50.png

They are a member of the 'Just League' apparently... Took less than a day for their partner, the Lagin'Chuuz Corporation to shut borders... I mean, they didn't even say hello first! :'( We may have to eat them... :)

We are receiving a communication from the Ganlarev Regime. They have decided they no longer need our protection. Very well, we shall no longer provide it and they shall reap the rewards of their decision...
upload_2018-12-18_20-40-22.png

Well, this was just rude!

We are growing well! Our energy production is back into positive numbers, with food production also starting to climb. The Vhemm will soon no longer reside on our planets and the current truce is nearing an end. We will soon be done with these creatures. Those other species in the galaxy, though they make noises of dislike towards us seem content to let us do as we will, so long as we do not interfere with their interests. There are some worries in this 'federation' that they appear to have created. So far it is limited to only two of the species we have encountered, but we should still be wary not to push any of our closest neighbours towards them. We shall sort out our sector of space when we have finished with the Vhemm. The Hive is growing!

upload_2018-12-18_21-19-37.png

The current state of the galaxy. So far no Fallen Empires...

(I will be busy over the next few days so am uncertain if I'll get a chance to play and update this, but rest assured, I will be back to it by next week.)

Well, I believe other nations may be well-moved to close borders if the Hive is becoming somewhat ravenous. :D

It seems so! Just because you snack on the odd diplomatic delegation, then work hard towards wiping an entire species from the galaxy, they think your some sort of evil genocidal race of carnivores... I mean, honestly, that's just not quite 100% true... it's only around 98% ish... ;)

If you’re finding the game too easy you might want to try Gavius’ ai mod. If you keep stomping the enemy easily it will greatly improve the game.

Thanks, I will look into that. To be fair, this is the first time I've played a hive mind and I have to say, with the bonuses they get to pop growth, it really does start to feel a bit OP at times. However, the rapid expansion is creating its own problems and whilst my wars against the Vhemm have weakened them, the Lagin'Chuuz corporation are rated as being equal to me, though weaker militarily and technology. I'm guessing not by a large margin if the contacts screen lists them as equal. Be interesting to see where this game goes. My main purpose for expanding so aggressively into Vhemm territory is that they hold 2 L-Gates and have a megastructure (I forget which and, being at work, am unable to boot the game up to see) which I want to get. Once that's done I will settle in and secure my territory. Downside of a hive mind is that everyone has a -50 opinion of me so I doubt I will get invited into a federation.

Trust me when I say that gavius’ mod makes a world of a difference. I go from being overwhelming compared to all the other empires to becoming inferior.

Thanks for the tip! Whilst I may not use it for this playthrough, I will definitely look it up for future games.
