So I played another intriguing game of AOW over the weekend and decided to share the fun
Managed to build a huge sprawling Swedish empire. Decided not to form Scandinavia... makes little sense to have a continent wide Scandinavia + I hear the bonuses are not as good. (?)
The great thing about the alternative history in this game was that the Muscovites got sacked really soon both by me and the Lithuanians and so we raced to annex them into our growing empires. Lithuania was a valid adversary for a long time...
... But then, as it should be I managed to incorporate also the Lithuanians and Poles and many more in the east to bring this monster Sweden to the world... Close to the Russian Empire of the time + Scandinavia. I allied throughout the game with the Austrians and also in that way helped them towards unifying the HRE (may have been a stupid move but was worth experiencing the great war in later gameplay)... The Ottomans got sacked by an imperialist Savoy(!) who I also drove off Anatolia and the Balkans with Byzantium and returned the cores to Byzantium who was greatful. Later annexed Savoy and created a client states in Aragons turf (Spain also, like Russia, never formed so Aragon kept their Italian holdings and expanded into the Balkans. Fought them and Savoy). It seems the big winners like Spain and Russia are quite nerfed in AOW... which makes an interesting game.
Anyway here is the world in 1816... right before a massive WWI style war.
The HRE got tired of my shit when I created "Italia" on Savoys territories in the underbelly of the Empire. Thankfully I managed to ally France (whom I had helped break apart in an earlier war in alliance with Austria) and a couple of other local powers before the war so I had a lot of help managing the remainder of Aragonese and Castilians that got called in by the HRE.
This monster battle with losses in more than a million raged on for months in Cuneo.
The situation the game ended in 1821 was that both the superpowers manpower reserves were depleted and although I had a remainder of little over 200k troops I cannot imagine occupying the whole of the HRE and its allies with those scraps. Although the war effort was 28% to my advantage no peace could have been pressed upon the HRE... This is one thing that annoys me a bit – that although you have killed all the armies and depleted the manpower... they still keep stupidly resisting a peaceout which at that point could be a most reasonable decision to come back later (well maybe the AI also knew the game was ending
).
Anyway, I had lots of fun with this game over the weekend and although some things might be a little annoying, EU4 is still the best grand strategy game one could hope for (and now a great war simulator aswell).
