About revolts: well, I was also surprised with the results, I expected more uprisings. I lost two divisions due tu the unreability of the native quality armeis, though.

About my goals: Well, maybe I am a bit ambitious, but I like a challange. The timetable may give me some trouble.

I dont have any aristocrates left:) All my industrialisation was done by me, as this is, while costly, is more effective for a solid industrialisation. Who cares about booze when you can have steel?:) Capitalisation will be started once I get civilised, as then I'll have a non-state capitalist party in power, probably.

Gaining Momentum

The 1850's start with ...

budget-1.jpg

debt. Industrialisation is not cheap,apparently

Then, in preparation to the military score requirement, we promote most of the population of two provinces to soldiers. I'll write a bit about the why some time later.

sendai.jpg

niigata.jpg

Next, civilisation slowly creeps into Japan.

satsuma.jpg

(While this is nice, the factory actually loses me money, so it wont be crewed till I civilise)

maru.jpg

daugero.jpg

payday2.jpg

Meanwhile, we pay off our debt.

budget54.jpg

colonyswap.jpg

And buy some colonies

In preparation for civilisation, we do 10 of this, giving us about 3 mil score:

hussar.jpg

We recruit from only one province, becouse, on hard, people actually die in war, aka your population gets decreased, and if we recruit all our troops from one province with only one soldier pop, only that is going to get killed. I know, itz is an exploit, but I think most players dont bother with changing the home province anyway.

We aslo get some nice event:

operacoal.jpg

Notice the increase in production, this comes from one tech and one resource: Clean Coal. For starting nations, it is one of the most profitable techs if they have coal RGOs.

Having built up some nice cash reserves, and developed early rail, I go on another industrialisation spree:

factories.jpg

And, becouse of this, we end this update as we started it: In debt. (notice the ongoing railroading)

whatever will you do with all those native units once you can get Regulars? That is a lot of money, canned foods and small arms wasted...

Ahura Mazda: It would be to much of an exploit. Even without a full citizenship party, the huge soldier population and overall production of China would simply give me such and edge, that noone in the world would be in the postition to challenge me. And besides, I wanted to try something different. Manchuria will be mine, though.

democratickid, Gonzo: Thanks!

TheConqueror, Capibara: Meh, maybe in 1934:)

robou: I need them for the required military score of 6, I'll disband them afterwards. Yes, its wasted money, but it is a necessary sacrifice.

The War Of Indipendance and Civilisation

The 1860 will be a turbulent decade for Japan, filled with upheaval and renewal.

First, we research the last technology required for civilisation, State And Government. This is perhaps the most important cultural tech apart from the education-increasing ones. The choices the player makes have a very profound impact upon the further course of the game.

stategov.jpg

Four choices to sheperd your population.

Soon after finishing the technology, the first choice pops up.

acler.jpg

I choose anti-clericalism, becouse the other cohice sets my population moralist, and its usually the worst (minority: slavery/residance) parties that are moralist, and atheist populations are relatively happy under secularised/pluralist parties, which are in some ways the best.

I also choose populism, as issue-based voting gives you better options to guide your pop towards the party you, and not they, want in power, meritocracy for the capitalist bonus, and bureaucracy out of tradition.

Before any of these all fire, though, I start my war with the Netherlands. The reason for this is that this way, I can start a colonial war, that means my enemy wont throw all his divisions at me, or at least, so I hope. And after i get civilised, the wont be able to invade at all, and I'll be able to whitepeace myself out.

waaar.jpg

And so, it begins....

The dutch seem to have a soft spot for the province of Hyogo, the war actually took place in that province alone.

hyogo1.jpg

A lackluster begining.

hyogo2.jpg

Hmm, this is going somewhere.

highpoint.jpg

The high point of the war.

All in all, the war cost the dutch about fifteen divisions, all destoryed, while I lost about a hundred thousand man, and, judging from the decrease in my reqruitment cap, about 60K population in soldiers.

In the meantime, an important invention fires:

mingov.jpg

This means, we are about to civilise...

civ.jpg

(ignore the date, I forgot to take a screenshot the first time and had to replay a bit to get it.)

Also, the Russians want something from us now that we are a civilised nation:

shimoda.jpg

Becoming civilised also has a profound impact on the budget, our income jumping from 100 to 300 overnight. And here is, why:

Tax efficiency before:
taxbefore.jpg

and after becoming civilised:
taxafter.jpg

At this point, the war became a deadlock, with me having no navy to invade the dutch, and the dutch being unable to invade me becouse none of my territory counted as colonies. I waited about a year for a peace offer, then want on and gave one myself:

peace.jpg

accepted.jpg

In a bit under thirty years, Japan transformed form a backwards country ruled by useless warriors, into:

A Great Power!

Very well done. Japan is usually extremely boring in the 1836 scenario but you've managed to industrialise, civilise, and hold your own against a European power. Impressive

It looks like Japan gets plenty of new events in VIP, would you say they make it much easier to civilise?

Thank you.

Well, it depends. I have not playe vanilla in years, but I suspect the dutch letter has not been changed by much. What does help is the feature that encreases the percentual RP generation of incivilised nations with regards to the literacy rate. Without that increas in RP, I would not have been able to civilise on my own before 1900. The reduced mil score requirement also helps, but by the time I set about to get that, it did not matter that much. A debt of 50K is easily payed of once you civilise.

First colonies

After getting civilised, we immidiately set about to replace our army with something a bit more modern, and a bit more warscore-adding:

recruit.jpg

Next off, reforms. A bit radical, yes, but I was planing on getting the conservatives into power first, and thus had to set either landed, or suffrage. I though suffrage would be better.

refroms.jpg

This, however, has some intersting effects:

democracy.jpg

This is becouse I had a radical party in power, then had totally democratic reforms. Of course, the usualy flip-flop of democracy-dictatorship happens during the electolar campaign, but in the end, the conservative Court Faction wins.

politics.jpg

And, since we have a new army, I plan to use it. The first target is South-East Asia. And here is the warplan:

warplan.jpg

Along the lines, groups of five divisions (thus 15 divisions in total) will advance and annex Cambodia and that state in Laos, while Annam will be reduced to its capital.

Our divisions board their transports:

board.jpg

The diplomats do their work:

warannam.jpg

Our divisions unload:

landing.jpg

After forcing our will onto these three states:

peaceannam.jpg

We also reduce Burma to its capital.

This means that in a little under two years of war, with, sadly, great losses (attrition really hurts on harder difficulties), we have gained ourselves a nice little colonial empire:

colonies.jpg

Meanwhile, the War Of 1866 spills over as France joins in, and soundly beats non-unified Prussia:

pruloses.jpg

The next step is not so obvious. Siam, the next logical cohice for completing the domination of South-East Asia, is guarantied by Great Britain, while Korea, also a very tempting, and due to its high population and good industrial RGOs, a very necessary addition, has Russia as its keeper. The Dutch territories all look tempting, but I am decades behind them in millitary technologies, and i have no navy to speak of. We shall see where the Sun shines next.

On the AAR:

Fun. I always love Japan AAR's; they are exciting, and this one has the benefit of going straight to the gameplay. It's interesting to see you take the Dutch path in the game since I never ever had the stomach to become anyone's satellite.

How strong is Russia? Can you challenge it yet? Korea would really, really add to your power with all its coal and iron provinces. If you ever get a full citizenship party, it could even be your second industrial hub with all that population!

OT:

I can't tell you how happy I am to see the Napoleonic triumph. Boo Prussia. :)

...even if it makes the Western European map really, really ugly. VIP seriously needs some extra events to simulate what should come after a French victory in the Franco-Prussian war: a bid for Belgium perhaps (with British intervention as a challenge?), buying Luxembourg certainly if it isn't already French, and cleaning up the borders a bit.

Oh, and while the timing is quite excellent for the French AI, I guess that most of the time an "early" Franco-Prussian war comes not from a stroke of opportunism but rather the Luxembourg crisis event chain where France tried to buy Luxembourg but, with Prussia's opposition, backs down -- it has a chance to just declare war instead.

roubou: Well, I agree, but the only possbile dictatorship I could get would be either anarcho-liberal or reactionary. No way I am getting those into power.

Being a satelite is, especially in Japans case, absolutely the same as being unciv. You cant declare war (as Japan is an island, I could not either), and you get les diplomats (like an unciv needs them anyway.)

Well, it is certainly weaker, and more importantly, keener or making peace than British India or its master, GB.

However, if its is fine with you, readers, I'll give myself a house rule. Since Britain is horribly moronic when it comes to peace settlements, is is okay with all of you if I neville myself a white peace in case the fronts have not changed in let say, three years?

Vote!
