great!! maybe now its time for peace? after all, the historical Japanese plan was to create a puppet in the Western Coast

The Japanese did not have any historical plans for an invasion of the United States, it was deemed impossible by the Japanese military, wherever that information is from is wrong and no historian has ever asserted that and there are no Japanese documents stating that either. Rather, their whole strategy, not too far fetched, was to deliver a couple of major blows (Pearl Harbor, Philippines, and then hopefully at Midway) and force a war weary USA to concede. Although, the American population, especially on the west coast, was paranoid to the bone of a Japanese invasion that never came. Japan had no interest for the Continental US, just wanted to put the US on the sideline for their real ambitions in Asia since America was seen as Japan's greatest obstacle to Asian Imperial dominance. They even came out with a hopeful hopeful plan for a few planes to set the Westcoast forests on fire with some fire bombs, although the plan ultimately failed.

Although, per this timeline concerning the AAR, it seems that such a peace would be welcomed? Especially since, by the looks of things, not only are the Americans desperate, but just how far inland can you go with your long supply lines, logistical obstacles...traveling across an entire ocean, and other areas of interest?

And news from Europe? Are Germany and Italy doing something like constructing ships and planes to eventually support you?

Germany has slightly over 500 IC and they're building a lot of airfields, coastal forts (about 1/3 of their IC). However I am not expecting action of any kind in 1942 as it takes some time to complete those battleships and carriers and majority of their forces are guarding border with SU and according to my surveillance British Isles are heavily defended (at least one division in every port it seems). Maybe I will send SNLF to Europe to open doors for Germany.

Italy is building infantry divisions and is also strengthening Regia Marina a bit.

I've also did a quick look at UK as both remnants of Kriegsmarine and Regia Marina were looking busy executing commerce warfare. British are down to zero convoys and half of their convoys isn't running. They're also out of rares and thus their IC sometimes drop to 42. According to the state of British merchant marine (I didn't look at other things) one would say that British Empire is on their last legs and I should decide which wargoals to add against UK.

Looks like your extremly experienced troops cut right through the US' troops. More so because the US is deploying more and more militia forces. Which on the one hand makes sense, an invasion caused them to mobilise everyone capable of fighting, but on the other hand doesn't seem to pose much of a threat to these veteran Japanese soldiers. Still, I really like the way you've planned this invasion, stage by stage.

20-30% bonuses from unit experience negates 20% combat efficiency penalty from hard difficulty and a lot of leaders with skill 4 or 5 also helps. The militias I am encountering are divisions spawned by a HPP decision that spawns some militias in province to a adjacent victory point that is under your enemies control.
As for planning, the initial stages had to be well planed as I lacked both units (units were still redeploying from Europe, Caucasus and Siberia) and transports so everything was utilized to buy me enough time to bring enough troops to the shore with limited transport capacity. 2nd landing was a must as I wouldn't be able to hold the ground with limited supplies in only one beachhead against whole US army. To be honest, now when beachheads are stabilized and cavalry is in place, I am lacking any plan and I am simply exploiting every possibility of encirclement while slowly and steady advancing.
Also, when HPP 3.3.4 will come out I will most likely do a SU AAR focused on war against allies after defeating Axis threat which will include planning on multiple levels as build-up against Germany and Allies will be very, very tight.

great!! maybe now its time for peace? after all, the historical Japanese plan was to create a puppet in the Western Coast

There will be no peace with the imperialistic dogs, enemies of the workers must be eradicated! Oh wait...I am not playing as SU :D Surrender progress of the USA is still at 20% and afaik HPP lacks any decisions/events regarding puppet state in the Western Coast.

I'm a big fan of HPP and I almost always play Japan, so I'm following this with interest. I like your creative use of Japan's starting cavalry and the way you're building battleships as well as carriers. It's given me some things to think about for my own Japan games.

34. The Invasion, part 9
(16th - 31st August 1942)

uAig0Rh.jpg

Shortly after Round Mountain has been secured 2 US militia divisions stationed in Moapa found themselves under strong Japanese attack. Nearly 76,000 Japanese were attacking almost 24,000 US militia men. The result was catastrophic for the US as IJA held numerical, equipment, tactics and experience advantage. In the battle which lasted for 7 hours 56 Japanese soldiers died while US lost 1499 men.

mZ8y48b.jpg

Yet another opportunity for encirclement has been spotted. One US infantry and one Canadian infantry divisions have exposed themselves into vulnerable position and the US division even dared to attack IJA division guarding Oakland while Canadians realized danger and started retreat to safety. Despite immense effort of Japanese bombers which executed interdiction with almost broken planes Canadian division managed to escape.
Shortly after escape of the Canadian infantry division all Japanese bombers apart from one light bomber air fleet which just arrived to San Francisco were ordered to stop bombardment and undertake repairs as biggest opportunity has been spotted and for this all planes must be in better shape.

hieWD6o.jpg

In the vicinity of Flanigan an interesting situation occurred. Japanese cavalry was attacked in Flanigan just shortly before their arrival to Reno where probably the most famous IJA division, 10 'Kurogane' Hoheishidan, were defending itself against US attack. However the attack on Flanigan, doomed to fail, have slowed reinforcements for division fighting in Reno. Therefore an attack on Ely, source of the pinning attack, was ordered. In the moment when US troops, most of with half or less organization, found themselves under attack they've immediately stopped attack on Flanigan and reinforcements for 10 'Kurogane' Hoheishidan were free to arrive to Reno.

IePTfC3.jpg

Just as Round Mountain was secured 3 Imperial Japanese Army divisions were allowed to march to Caliente as it was defended by one completely disorganized motorized division. Few skirmishes for Caliente were fought in the following days with passing US divisions, but superiority of Japanese army was unexceptionable.

ymffHSy.jpg

US attack on Reno was stopped and after some time Imperial Japanese Army was the only one who was attacking. US 83rd 'Thunderbolts' Division was surrounded by IJA forces and yet another US division was taken prisoners of war, weakening US forces (the division consisted of 3 infantry brigades and 2 horse towed support brigades).

X9dAT9R.jpg

In the East coast of the US more and more US divisions are arriving and Japanese divisions are retreating without a fight into a more favourable positions behind river.
Authors note: I've preferred to take also Norfolk as there was some (4 or 5) IC in addition to port and airfield. Denying 4 base IC to US for 2 months and then peaceful retreat into more favourable position for defense seemed like offer one couldn't refuse.

La7B0i3.jpg

Imperial Japanese Army is pushing harder and harder. This time IJA is attacking Grand Canyon. Even with terrain and rivers playing into US cards their resistance is quickly crushed and Japanese divisions are about to pass desert area of the West Coast.
While army is busy fighting there are also aerial combats for air superiority. Whoever wins the skies can bomb the other side into oblivion. US are not willing to gave up the air superiority without a fight but even their fighters which are designed for purposes of aerial combat can't match Japanese carrier air groups in equal numbers.

xN8nz2T.jpg

More with intention to show the US they have to fear Japanese army strategic bombardment of New York was executed. Almost no real damage was done but US were shown they won't have rest until they surrender.

OVkueTo.jpg

IJN carrier task force and SNLF have arrived to Brest from Washington D.C. and they're prepared to open gates of British isles to out German and Italian allies.

A0PwxpE.jpg

With 10 divisions in vicinity of Washington D.C. a defense in depth has been established. These 10 divisions are ready to draw attention of US army so the main force on the West coast has freedom to operate and execute so far biggest offensive.

uTDdVzb.jpg

Pleasant news came on 29th August where improvements in ground attack tactics were achieved. This will come handy during and upcoming offensive.

L3gNft9.jpg

So far the biggest operation during the invasion to USA have started with an attack on Prairie City (highlighted). One US militia division fought 2 cavalry and one infantry division. In the battle which lasted for 5 hours 29 Japanese and 634 US soldiers died.
Authors note: Those cavalry divisions with motorized support are real militia killers thanks to 0.5 armor representing armored cars. Militias without support brigades are unable to pierce them thus are providing armored advantage to the cavalry.

GXHlDaR.jpg

Main attacks of the operation which main targets are to link beachheads and to trap as many divisions as possible at the West coast have started. Main target of 10 mobile divisions is to link beachheads which are separated by 4 provinces so every province will be held by at least 2 mobile divisions, this will be hopefully enough to stop US counterattack. At the flanks infantry is already awaiting orders to attack the flanks and provide relief to mobile divisions so they aren't immediately attacked by all trapped divisions.

sH35Kao.jpg

Attacks on Winnemucca and Redmond are the most important attacks as they will open the path to linking both beachheads and trapping bulk of US army at the West coast. Fortunately none of those provinces were heavily fortified nor guarded and the battles were quick victories. Shorter battle for Redmond lasted 11 hours during which 105 Japanese and 1212 Canadians died. During longer battle for Winnemucca, which lasted for 30 hours 239 Japanese soldiers and 2130 US troops died. In both the casualty ratio was 10 times higher for the allies.

IC9mX3i.jpg

Naval base in Los Angeles was improved and is now able to ship more supplies and in the following days additional ports will be completed in many provinces between San Francisco and Los Angeles in order to increase amount available supplies. Also Night Mission Training has been researched which will help Japanese aircraft.
Authors note: I've discovered that Night Mission Training is available to be researched too late, If I have noticed sooner and started research 1st January 1942 as its 1942 tech US casualties from bombardment could be higher. Also I am expecting the supply system to go completely crazy when I link the beachheads.

Casualties:

Even with decreased bombing effort from Japanese side due to repairs the causality ratio has risen to 2.99 from 2.97.

I really like you clinical approach of a slow pace total war with minor encirclements, but also how you are ready to take the opportunity for a major encirclement now that situations favour it. Your east coast front though seems a bit unstable.

The East Coast Front is entirely meaningless. If the US puts together the forces to crush it, Yay! Those are forces that are not going to be able to intervene in the West and the invasion force can retreat to the transports safely.

The East Coast front emerged when I've discovered that US capital was left completely unguarded and serves as distraction which gave momentum to the West Coast front as USA redeployed some troops from west to the east. If US manages to put together some meaningful force to launch a serious attack my defense in depth will allow all units to safely retreat to Washington D.C. which will be turned into fortress (US will be attacking into urban terrain and will suffer penalties from shore bombardment). There are also transports prepared so troops can be safely rescued from Washington and immediately transported to the West in case of worst case scenario.
Don't forget that Washington D.C. holds 99,999 supplies and 99,999 fuel which will render all supply issues in the US to be a joke if I ever manage to link it with the rest of the front.

Not sure if your SNLF corps in France wouldn't be of better use in the USA. If nothing else, they could employ hit and run tactics against industrial areas.

What other forces will you ship over to the USA?

And one would think they'd be grateful for all the help in Soviet Union and obliterating Royal Navy. Anyway I will try to capture Dover or some big port and give Germany and Italy orders to strike there.

35. The invasion, part 10
(1st - 15th Semptember 1942)

10 'Kurogane' Hoheishidan as always leads the attack, despite low organization this division is the first one to arrive to Winnemucca and first one to rush towards Cedar Mountains which is entirely undefended.

Redmond is also secured and cavalry immediately attacked US militia division in Malheur, so far no heavy resistance have been encountered and everything is going according to the plan.
In the end 3 battles for Malheur have been fought. In the initial one against militia division 40 Japanese and 246 US soldiers have died. In the following battle Canadian infantry division passing Malheur has been attacked and this battle resulted in 48 casualties on the Japanese side and 281[/ B] on the Canadian side. In the final battle US cavalry division was engaged and this battle resulted in 98 Japanese dead and 979 Americans dead.

Americans managed to sneak infantry division into Grand Canyon and even started bombardment of Moapa, province from which Japanese attack has been coming.
US planes executing ground attacks have been successfully intercepted by Japanese CAGs operating from San Diego and the battle for Grand Canyon has been also won after 2 days.

PPgeFHP.jpg

With encirclement about to be closed, first attacks on US forces in order to prevent any attempts to break the encirclement have started. 2 militia divisions in Lovelock has been attacked from multiple directions. The outcome of battle for Lovelock was tremendous. 5 dead Japanese soldiers while US lost 1510 men, 300 times more then Japanese!

Amongst other places which were attacked even before finishing the encirclement was McKenzie where US armor division was located. This armored division was the reason why offensive in the north directed to the south halted and even forced one province deep retreat of the Japanese forces. This time US armor was attacked by superior Japanese force and found itself under bombardment executed by Japanese light bombers days before planned Japanese attack. To general surprise US armor didn't fought IJA force for a long time and after few hours retreated.

9th September at 8:00 (around midnight local time) US forces have been surrounded by Imperial Japanese Army and 20-25 US and Canadian divisions have been encircled. Hour later set of Japanese attacks which started containment of the pocket have started. The attacks were also ordered in order to prevent any breakthrough attempts.

Despite Japanese best effort to grab US attention in order to distract US from executing breakthrough attempts Winnemucca is attacked, however the cavalry there is well dug in and one of the attacking US divisions is already nearly out of organization. Later Cedar Mountains are also under US attack. However even this US attack is weak and without reinforcing is doomed to fail.

Situation in the US, 5 months after Japanese soldier laid his foot on American soil. West Coast is more or less under Japanese control and after pocket is crushed advance to the east will follow.

The destruction of the Westcoast army group should be the final straw for the US defence, BANZAI!!!!!

I don't know. It's a long walk east and that's where most of the good infra and starting IC are located.

For some reason, the mainland US is just 60% and 80% infra everywhere. It makes you wonder how much research has been done on that :p
