I plan to do similar update as previous one but this time focused on IJN, IJA to somehow introduce you might of my armies :p Hope you don't mind another update which does not bring gameplay. If there will be objections I will provide gameplay one.

Also I got an interesting idea for AAR called 'Practicing submarine warfare'. It will be Germany game (probably with BlackICE - I am BICE noob but I like subs and some concepts of aircraft there) with focus on submarine warfare and strategic airforce to show whether it's possible to destroy Allies by intensive convoy and strategic air warfare (almost no investment into Heer will be made but Luftwaffe and subs will see massive investments).
I did some tests and by the time of Polish surrender French convoy reserves were gone and British were nearly destroyed - they were losing around 15 convoys per day. If I would ever realize this idea the updates will be more focused on strategic warfare that on land warfare. What do you guys think about this idea?

Looking good, getting ready for war with the USA I see.
No objection to some "state of the nation" updates from my side, that's always interesting.

And that idea for the next AAR sounds fun too, but finish this first! (says the guy who hasn't updated his AAR at all lately)

I really want to provide more "state of the nation" updates as I do feel that I am not providing enough information about this.
Next AAR waiting in line is SU HPP one with focus on WW3, and I also want to do Italy HPP one :( so many ideas for AAR...

15. Report on the state of Imperial Army

Hello, this update will be one of the shorter ones as I want to present composition of IJA, IJN and airforce as there were questions about how does IJA or IJN look like.

s545.jpg

IJN at the moment has 108 ships of which 20 are capitals. If you look on the reinforcement needs you can see that IJN is in pretty good shape.

7lmr.jpg

Most of Imperial Japanese Airforce are carrier air groups and they are the ones mostly used. Other commonly used air units are fighters and medium bombers which are supporting IJA.

vnyu.jpg

These forces sums to around 2 and half army. Mostly used units are infantry and cavalry for exploitation. Apart from these IJA has few assault battalions and infantry support tanks which will be useful when it comes to conflict with SU.

q057.jpg

Overall picture of Japanese military forces.

x0z8.jpg

Yamato and her stats. Battleship which sunk highest number of enemy ships.

kfhi.jpg

When I was checking carriers for the one which sunk most enemy ships I was quite surprised that it is Kaga, relatively old carrier. I was expecting one of the new modern carriers from new CTF to have highest number of kills but it looks like Kaga is still worthy part of IJN.

I apologize for quite boring and small update but in next update you'll see India's downfall and some unexpected action :p Stay tuned!

Everyone understood that CAGs did the job but Ikar has to be special :p But this concept of ramming ships has been there for some time so it's not a bad idea :p

Quick comment to say I love this AAR. I am discovering HPP and I am using it as a walk-through with Japan.

But I am really surprise by the fleet composition. When I group large fleets (especially for the CV + LC), I get huge placement penalties...
Are those offset by the scale of the fleet?
Do I miss a tech?
Do I have a wrong general?
Do I do too large fleet?

Based on that, we would you recommend for fleet composition for a standard SAG and a standard CTF? (remember reading somewhere an HPP fleet composition, but lost it, sorry)

Thanks again for this amazing AAR and thanks in advance for any answer / hint.

Thanks again for this amazing AAR and thanks in advance for any answer / hint.

My main CTF consists of 7 CLs and 5 CVs and they have less than 10% positioning penalty which is completely negated by their commander. My fleets usually have 12 ships (5 CVs and 7 CLs for CTF and 6 BBs and 6 CAs for SAG). Their positioning penalty is quite small and even 2 star admiral can take charge of them.

As for positioning penalty. This depends on how many ships do you have in the fleet do you have and this caps at 80%. This penalty is reduced by 10% for each level fleet commander has. So if the fleet has level 8 commander (which Yamamoto Isoroku can become after some battles) you can create naval doomstack. I've tried this once in vanilla as Germany with CA, CL fleet and it was absolutely deadly and broken so I don't tend to use them and one have more fleets at hers disposal.

My usual strategy is to use SAG fleet to engage enemy and support it with CAGs striking from adjacent sea zone. This lead to the decisive victories you've seen so far.
Hope that I've provided answers to your question. If not, feel free to ask again :)

I am sorry that I've not been paying attention to this AAR as friend of mine recently bought Hearts of Iron 3 and he is pretty excited by it so we've been playing together cooperative multiplayer game in my free time (we've just completed Barbarossa, I am playing as Italy and he's playing as Germany). I will play today so update will be coming soon. And who know, maybe I will talk him into creating cooperative AAR :p

So you have time for MP after all eh ? Why dont you join us then and join us in a small AAR Ikar wants to make about it ?

I do have but not for regular schedule :( we usually play from 11 PM CET to 1 AM at very random days. Fixed schedule is not for me and IIRC you play on weekends where I have absolutely no time :(

Thanks a lot for the answer and I forgot about the level of the admiral negating the penalty... it will help me put more screens in each of my fleets then (and probably do one big SAG with dear Yamamoto)

And glad you are still moving forward with this very informative AAR.
Can't wait to see you fight the Americans soon.

16. The advance
(1st July 1940 - 1st September 1940)

bBRT8G7.jpg

Japanese marines and IJA are slowly but steadily progressing in capturing every allied piece of land in Asia. If everything goes right Allies will have no bases in Asia when the strike on Pearl Harbor will come (obviously apart from US ones).

sW2V2OP.jpg

IJA is also advancing in the New Zealand which will become another Japanese puppet as I have no intention to take of their lands myself. 100,000 men are operating on New Zealand and if you look at the outcome of battle of Paeroa you can see who has clear advantage there, both in numbers and in terms of soldiers equipment and experience.

DS14OKi.jpg

As most of India's army has been captured and taken prisoners of war cavalry is experiencing almost no resistance from Indians. North of India tanks of major general Kawabe Masakasu finally arrived into Kathmandu and caused Nepalese surrender. One less British puppet to deal with.

nOEPuAV.jpg

Another success in the field of military doctrines. Japanese soldiers are amongst well trained ones. This will help them fight better against red hordes where commies could use their human wave tactics and in places where human wave or superior firepower is not applicable (China, Burmese jungles) they will excel.

Eb4vlQc.jpg

Romania was forces to secede Transylvania to the hand of Hungary. Shortly after this right wing coup has taken place there and Romania joined the Axis (bit OT - I've seen Romania to decline Hungarian claims once declare war upon Hungary).

bDHUVTA.jpg

While battle for France is raging in the Europe IJA cavalry units are nearing undefended Delhi.

ruVdUtm.jpg

And while cavalry is near Delhi group IJN attacks Bombay, last important Indian city which was safe from Japanese might. However this fleet was just passing by as Bombay was not main target for them.
India fell shortly after and Japan is another step closer to full control of Asia.

CkRL7Gr.jpg

During all this mess Soviet Union delivered ultimatum to the Baltic states. Brave Estonians decided to resist the red bear. However their resistance was short as strength of Estonian army is negligible compared to the Soviet one.

gTv3p0m.jpg

Imperial Japanese Navy fleet has finally reached its destination while escorting transports carrying 100,000 men eager to fight the Allies. Oman was the first target.

Shortly after Oman capital has fallen they gave up every piece of resistance they had and surrendered. 5 divisions started march and landgrab towards Yemen. While the rest of the fleet escorting another 5 divisions have departed towards another objective.

Fleet of admiral Yamamoto Isoroku run into Royal Navy fleet while it was entering the Red sea and one of the larges naval battles this war has seen has encountered. Lack of ships Yamamoto had was compensated by CAGs operating (some were operating from Kaga, most fearsome IJN carrier in terms of ships sunk) from adjacent sea zone.

Although IJN was outnumbered more than 2:1 IJN ships and CAGs managed to sink HMS Nelson, pride of the Royal Navy. Few more RN capitals were sunk including carrier HMS Furious, and at least 2 more capitals (IIRC it was HMS Royal Oak and HM Hood - I've blindly dismissed popup with battle ). Apart from these capitals one British heavy cruiser, 3 destroyers and 4 transports were sunk while IJN has lost one heavy cruiser and IJN Mutsu. This was the first time Allies actually managed to sink IJN battleship.

And there's coming another landing. This one is to drive Allies out of Ethiopia's vicinity so they don't distract Italians from doing their job elsewhere.

Paris has fallen but Frenchmen in France are not yet defeated unlike their fleet. IJN fleet patrolling at the entrance to the Red sea encountered remnants of the French fleet and sunk possibly their last battleship Ocean.

I've decided to invest a bit into superior firepower doctrine as this will be surely useful against red hordes which Japan will be soon fighting.

With France on their knees Italy accepted Germany's call to war just like they historically did. Is that a feature of HPP or it was just a coincidence? I am thinking whether should I tag switch to Italy and add wargoal which demands historical Mussolini's claims from France. I would like to hear you opinions on this.

North island is nearly whole under Japanese control and New Zealand's surrender is just matter of time. After this I will focus on driving Allies out of their bases in Pacific (e.g. Nauru) and slowly for Pearl Harbor.

P.S. I would like to apologize for not providing and update for quite some time. I hope that you've enjoyed this one packed with action.
As always any feedback is appreciated and I am looking forward to bringing you another update.

Wow you really are going after a lot of territory. Has anyone tried to take any of it back yet or is everyone too busy fighting in Europe?

This why I've decided it would be better to puppet Australia and New Zealand as they can take care of defending their homeland themselves. I would say that at the moment no one has fleet capable of carrying enough troops to make a threatening move (apart from US Pacific navy which is still dormant) as French navy in non-existent and France lays on its knees and Royal Navy has been again defeated.

Great moves and thanks for updating it, love reading it!
I vote for Italian claims on France also, just for letting them get more troops and actually do something useful.

Just to keep you updated on my own attempts: I really love how unpredictable is HPP mod.

I did a first try during which Japan smashed the Chinese and conquered Nationalist China in 4 weeks with landing with my marines and adding troops afterwards in 5 different locations along the coast (it felt like I mastered the game )
Then I just realized everything went wrong in Europe (Germany with Rhineland in 1937 only, Italy defending Austria...) and I did not wanted something too ahistorical.

So I started again and after 9 months of crazy war in China, it's a stalemate, the US have embargoed me, the Chinese have twice as many troops as me, half my IC goes into reinforcements and the British and the Soviets sent lots of crazy troops to NatChi.

Main gaps between both attempts?
- China never had the united front until final days in the first attempt
- No Soviet or British intervention in the first one
- Chinese troops were mostly guarding the border facing terribly powerful and threatening Tibet in the first one
- NatChi national unity was amazingly low (no idea why) and I did not even have to take Chongqing in the first one
- Trade was automated in the second one, so I did not lick the US boots with lots of trading to ensure they stay friendly (+ did the same for NatChi in my first attempt to limit my threat)

Last additional questions: In neither case did I get the Nankin massacre which enables you to create the Jingwei regime... I looked at the triggers and it's just that I was too quick the first time probably, but for the second time its odd... any tips?

Third time is going to be a charm...
