I must offer you my most sincere condolences for the passing of your grandmother, Queen Elizabeth. She was a truly great leader who turned England into an empire in all, but name. She led a glorious revolution against the corruption of the Church, and for this, all of Christendom has her thanks. I believe a man like yourself can and will lead England into new and greater heights.

On another matter, I would like to apply myself for the position of both general and Commander of Forces. Personally, I believe myself to be a better candidate for commander than Sir Bernard Lancaster, but this is just my own opinion, but I believe it to be true.

Spring 1500

Walter William Briggs returned to Marches after what seemed so long spent away from his home. He missed the old castle, but more importantly he had missed his daughter. The young girl kept getting bigger each time her returned. Now she was just over ten, and now she was to be wed. Walter questioned whether the timing was right, for his daughter Clara was so young, yet his wife assured him that the time was right. Clara was his only child and heir to his duchy, and his wife had reached the end of her child-bearing years. He needed to secure his duchy, and that required that his daughter be married matrilineally. Count Guy de Laval was one of few men willing to arrange such a match with their son who wasn't some lowborn noble, but he also wanted this marriage cemented to ensure Walter would aid him. Walter understood the count's ambitions, for surely it would do well for him to have a voice at court for French interests, something the duke was fully willing to do if it meant his daughter had a preferable match.

As the music started to play, Walter knew it was time. The servants escorted his daughter out next to him and he had to hold back tears. Even at ten, she was so beautiful in her wedding dress. Clara seemed more annoyed with the ruffles of the dress and kept trying to adjust it much to the annoyance of the servants. Walter regretted she had to go through with such a momentous occasion so early in her life, but politics did not care for the wants of young girls. He gently grasped his little girl's hand, eliciting a smile on her face, and led her down the aisle.

Relatives and other notable guests cried and waved as Walter walked his daughter down the aisle. At the end, the thirteen-year-old Nicolas stood with his father, Count Guy de Laval, all dressed up and waiting. A Protestant priest awaited them at the altar, and the count had reluctantly agreed to allow his son to accept this new faith despite the fact most of France was still Catholic. As they stepped up to the front, Walter noticed the looks Nicolas and Clara were giving each other. The both seemed amused and somewhat playful, having apparently formed a friendship while Walter was away. He knew they were too young for love yet, but he hoped it would come in time.

Thus Walter offered the hand of his daughter to this young Frenchman he had met years ago on campaign and hoped he had made the right decision. Much joy and celebration followed the ceremony, and the two wedded couple seemed to revel in it, even if they were perhaps too young to understand the implications of what had just happened. Clara seemed so happy, and that only served to make Walter happy. Clara would make a fine duchess one day, and Nicolas a fine husband and duke. He spend some time with the two newlyweds before being called away to Ireland to put down a rebellion. What he didn't know was that was to be his last campaign. The duke passed away on the journey to Ireland, never to return to Marches again.

May 1503

The passing of Her Majesty pains us all and I send you my most sincere condolences. I never met the queen, but I have heard much of her glorious reign. She shall be remembered fondly by all her subjects, as I am certain your reign will live up to her example.

I have also sent this letter for another purpose. Three years ago I was married to Clara Briggs, the daughter and sole heir of the renowned Duke Walter William Briggs. His passing was tragic for my wife and her family, and I have mourned with her. Both of us were so young when he passed from this world, and thus the duchy of Mercia was ruled by Clara's mother as regent until recently. Now that I have reached my sixteenth birthday, my wife's family has agreed to grant me the title of regent, until such a time as my wife comes of age and we may jointly rule Mercia. I may be the son of a French count, but I shall serve the Crown and the people of Mercia as faithfully as my father-in-law. I also wish to express the joy that many of Your Majesty's French subjects experience under your rule. There may still be some dissent within France, but let it be known that there are still plenty of Frenchman that welcome their English brethren. I can only hope that I may help guide my kinsmen into fully accepting English rule and that I my serve as a voice of their interests at court.

I wish you well, Your Majesty, and may your reign be long and prosperous. Long live the king!

- Nicolas Briggs né de Laval, Duke of Mercia & Earl of Marches

((Name: Nicolas Briggs né de Laval
Birth-Date: 1 January 1487
Religion: Protestant
Class: Noble
Biography: The third son of French count Guy de Laval, Nicolas was married off to Walter William Briggs's only daughter Clara matrilineally, a way to secure the duke's succession and give the French count a voice at English court. He has been enamoured with all things English ever since Walter stayed at his family's home during a campaign in France. He still holds a great fondness for his home country and will support French interests whenever he can. While officially Protestant, he still holds sympathy for the Catholic faith and does not view them harshly, although he has no qualms with embracing the English Church. Unlike his father-in-law, Nicolas is not a military man, preferring diplomacy rather than warfare. Although he was not trained to rule, for he was a third son, suddenly being placed in charge of an entire duchy has forced him to develop a knack for administration.))

Days after Elizabeth’s passing, King Henry received letters of noblemen and noblewomen who delivered their deepest condolences. Was the Queen really like that much or did the nobles just want to lick his boots?

((To Countess Blois-Rogers))
I thank you for your kind words and for attending the funeral.. Your words warm my heart in these difficult times which the country is now going through.

~ King Henry VII Lancaster

((To Duke Robert Talbot))
It is most kind of you to give me your condolences for my grandmother’s passing. As distant family, it makes me more than happy that you attend the late Queen’s funeral. Elizabeth always spoke highly of your grandfather Oliver Talbot. I hope we can establish the same bond between us which existed between the late Queen and your grandfather.

~ King Henry VII Lancaster

((To Alexander Morgan))
It is very kind of you to write me in these sad times. Rest assured, that this is most appreciated by me and the entire royal family. The list of the late Queen’s accomplishments is endless and she left some big shoes to fill. I hope you can make it to the late Queen’s funeral.

Benjamin Lancaster has not handled the revolts in Ireland too well as Commander of the Forces. I gladly offer you this position and hope that you can put an end to these revolts which have been occurring in in Ireland and elsewhere. May your long experience as a captain help you in this difficult task.

~ King Henry VII Lancaster

((To Duke-Regent Nicolas Briggs))
I congratulate you on marrying the daughter of Walter Briggs, a true war hero who led the armies to victory in the unjust crusade. May he rest in peace just as the late Queen.
I trust the people of Mercia and if they want you as Duchess Clara’s regent then I accept that. As a young man, you should take the advice you can get. Ruling an important duchy as Mercia can prove challenging but I have the utmost confidence that you will do fine.

I also want to thank you for offering me your condolences for the late Queen’s passing. Will you and the Duchess make it to Canterbury for her funeral?

~ King Henry VII Lancaster

((Rome, 14th of March 1500.))

Jean had been laying in the ceiling of the church of St. Peters for some days. He had planned his every move, it was now a sunday and the heretic Bishop of Rome were supposed to hold a morning sermon. The Pope who had sent thousands of people into deaths, despair and ruined the lives of even more. Even worse he claimed to represent God directly, but all knew he were a greedy imposter abusing the words, no creating his own words, of God to increase his personal greed. The Pope had to pay for his crimes, and the peace treaty of Avignon were a farce. Yes indeed they woud liberate the Protestant provinces in Brabant, but the Pope would not admit that the so called crusade were unchristian and unholy - a crime in the eyes of God. He even used his devil tounge to say that the Anglican-Church were an official Christian branch, at the very same time he condemned them as heretics. He were the envoy of Satan and did nothing but lie and send people to their deaths. He had to be put down like the wicked animal he were. But still Jean knew the gravity of the situation, not only politically but mostly spiritually. He would commit the greatest sin of them all, he would murder someone else. And then a Bishop in a holy temple. Yet, the Pope twisted the true faith and were a false prophet who destroyed everything who were sacred, who sent thousands of Christians to their deaths over nothing.

The Pope would hold the sermon, Jean would initially participate for himself, confessing his faith and saying various prayers. After that the Pope would start to desecrate the holy church by talking politics. This would only show how much of a devil tounge he were, he speak of that the Queen of England were a demon sitting on the throne, and that the Protestant movement were still heretics and devil worshippers. "So much for your promises in the peace treaty" Jean thought for himself. After his speech the Pope would be embraced by thunderous applause. Jean then readied his bow, took aim and said "in the name of our father" and fired. It was as time stood still. The arrow flew through the entire aile, but it missed. It rammed right into the throne of Satan missing the Pope by mere inches. Jean cursed to himself, if he had only had one of his own bows or crossbows he would have hit the Pope. Jean adjusted his aim a little to the left, said in the name of the Son and fired. It seemed like neither the Pope, the crowd nor the guards understood what happened as they were all still and even applausing. The arrow penetrated right through the Papal tower hat. Jean were pleased at first, but then he realized he did in fact not hit the Pope but instead his materialistic hat. He could see the Papal guards were starting to bark out orders and look for the shooter. Jean took up the third arrow and said "and in the name of the Holy Ghost". This time it hit the Pope, right into his chest piercing through his heart and making the Pope fall into the throne of Satan. The Pope were dead, Jean froze he were in awe and shock. Not until some lady screamed he got back to reality, and chaos were everywhere. Jean went down from the ceiling and left his bow and one arrow - hopefully so he could frame the infidels for the assassination.

Jean went down, Papal guards rushed to the church, alarm bells ranged, people stomped eachother to their deaths. It was chaos. Jean had himself disguised as a Papal guard and it seemed like it worked, no one paid attention to him. Was it his disguise or the chaos? Eitherway Jean rushed to his first dove cage to send the letter to his wife that the deed were done. That the envoy of Satan were dead. A Papal officer stopped him and asked where he was going, afterall all Papal and city guards had to go to the cathedral and secure the Pope and the Cardinals. Jean told the captain with a French heavy accent that he were going to alert the authorities in Italy and the Holy Roman Empire that the Pope were dead and that they \had to be on the look out for an assassin. The captain investigated him for some minutes, looked at his entire body up and down, up and down and into his eyes. Finally he said "Good. Do also let them know we're on the lookout after a Saracen assassin the guards at the murder scene found some muslim bow and muslim arrow". Jean agreed to do so and rushed to his dove cage. Everything seemed like going as planned, soon he would come home. And he would be greeted as a hero of the reformation.

Jean reached the cage after navigating through countless alleys and streets and avoiding guards. He reached the cage and sent his letter. The dove flew away and Jean thought about the tale of of Noah. He were the flood that wiped away the sins in Rome and now he sent away a white dove to deliver the message. A sudden sound came, it sounded like thunder. Jean saw the dove drop down and a Papal guard with a musket fired the shot from a rooftop. Suddenly countless guards surrounded Jean, and another shot were fired from a second shooter. The captain he met before appeared. "Halt! Consider this your warning shot. Do you think I am a fool? Why would a mere guard send this important message to the rest of the Princes of the Catholic world? And look at your back! You still have the quiver on you, filled with the saracen arrows! Assassino!" Jean's cover were blown, there was no way to escape this. He took out his blade and were intent to end his own life, sparing himself from humilation and torture. But a third shot sounded, the bullet weren't powerful enough to kill Jean but it had enough power so that the blade got out of his hands. Jean started to run, to run for his life.

"Assassino, assassino" sounded through the streets. A guard grabbed him chocking him, Jean quickly took the guard's blade and killed him. Many more would try to end his life, but Jean fought valiantly. In the end he had to succumb to exhaaustion and the sheer numbers of the guards. The captain approached Jean, and asked him who he were. Jean refused to say so. The captain then asked why he did so. Jean exposed himself then. "I do it for our Lord! I will eradicate this filth that desecrate the Anglican-Church, as I am Jean de Blois commander in the French royal forces". Jean had exposed himself, he knew it was all over. Hopefully the Papal authorities wouldn't connect that Jean de Blois was not just a French noble, but also the husband of an English noble. If that was connected, then it would be revealed that it was his dear Anna that were behind all of this. "Then you will meet our Lord" the Captain said. Jean were then impaled on a pike, and his body would continue to be an example for the rest of the heretics until time, worms and bird had consumed it.

((Oslo, 23rd of March 1500.))

Anna recieved the news. The deed were done, Benedicte were dead. Still this filled Anna with sorrow her beloved husband were dead. And all over a rash decision, she did it in the moment and regretted it once when he left. But now it was done, Anna had made her loved husband commit the worst crime of them all. He had murdered someone, and now he were dead and would never leave the Eternal city. And he had even partially exposed her in a letter. Why in God's name did he do that? She would have heard that. Now the heretic nobles and clergy of Europe pointed the finger at Anna. Anna hoped that she could prove that she were innocent, and that the letter proves nothing. At the same time she also hoped that Jean, even with the greatest sin of them all, would be treated as a hero of the reformation who gave everything to the Anglican-Church. Anna prayed to God that she would get through this mess that she had instigated and that He would judge her on way or the other. Anna would also write some letters to the few friends she had outside of Oslo, and the Queen, in order to hopefully secure their support.

Dear Queen,

I believe you have heard the news of what my husband did. I do not ask for your support in this case, but the accusations that it was me who were behind it are false. I hope you can see that this were the actions of my husband and not of me.

Your loyal servant, Anna Blois-Rogers.

Dear friend,

I am sure you have heard of the dreaded news that have happened. I hope that I can count on your support in the future, in case the Papists will use this tragic event to go against me and the Anglican-Church.

Your friend, Anna.

Count of Calais,

Your predecessor Annemarie and I had an alliance between our two humble houses. I will ask you if you will honor that and support me and myu County in the trhoubled times ahead.

-Countess Anna Blois-Rogers of Oslo.

Mathias got letter from... friend? He got letter from Anna Rogers, and she called Mathias a friend. She seemed to really need support. Or maybe she liked Mathias from what she have heard of him. They should really meet sometime...
Good Anna

You can be sure that you have my full support. We should even see each other. Maybe you want to visit me in Bordeaux some day?

Your Friend
Mathias Nothwell

((Back to the 1503))
Queen... She is death. And Mathias was gonna ask for Master of Coin position after seeing how badly English economy was going. Well, it was time to charm the new ruler. Wait, he is man?
Your Majesty

Firstly, I'm sorry about the death of our Great Queen. You will have my condolences. Also, if Your Greatness allows it, I can attend her funeral.

And secondly, seeing how English economy is not the best at the moment, may I ask for Master of Coin position. If your Majesty won't give it to me, I will understand, but the economy really needs improvement, and I think I'm the right person to do that.

Gratefully
Mathias Northwell

(( And with the pope assasinate it is time for me to make a new character. This should be fun! ))
Name: Ian Lyons
Birth-Date: 13 April 1477
Religion: Protestantism publically, Catholic in secrecy
Class: Courtier
Biography: Ian Lyons was born in London to a family of rich merchants. At a young age he joined the military, serving in an artillery regiment. He rose quickly rose throught the ranks, becoming a captain somewhere in 1490. When the Church of England was being formed he was one of the last to convert to Protestantism, however during the crusade he served his country just as he always did, not questioning a single order. Without hesitation he led his men to stamp out the Irish rebels. In the year 1503 he decided to be more active on the political scene, still loyaly serving in the army.

After having appointed Alexander Morgan as Commander of the Forces, the newly crowned King received an application from one of the ERTC’s merchants for the position of Master of Coin. The applicant must have forgotten that Henry was the acting Master of Coin before he became King but as the patient and kind man he was, he ignored Mathia’s Northwell’s criticism and replied to the letter anyways.

((To Mathias Northwell, Royal Merchant))
Thank you for offering me your condolences. The death of the late Queen is a great tragedy. Maybe you know that I was acting Master of Coin during the last years of Queen Elizabeth’s rule and I hate to admit it but you are right: The economy is still in a desolate state. Alexander Chaffinch, my predecessor, has ruined the economy and with my limited time I was unable to fix it.
You have been appointed as a merchant only recently. I am willing to make you my Master of Coin but keep in mind that this position comes with a great responsibility because that would also make you Head of the English Royal Trading Company.

~ King Henry VII Lancaster

((@Janha @DUKE Dan ‘The Man’ please write new plans for the King in the next few days.
I need to know from Alexander Morgan what he wants to do with the army. The Master of Coin should make a plan which deals with our precarious financial situation, buildings, trade, etc. Should you have forgotten the exact responsibilities of your positions then you find those on the front page.))

((April 1500, Bordeaux))

Anna arrived in Bordeaux. It was a nice change from the cold Oslo. She were invited by Mathias and hoped that she could get his support in the potential trials, and perhaps gain some political influence. It was beautiful here, and after riding through countless vineyards she finally came to the little house Mathias had. It was not big or luxurious, but it was charming in it’s own way. Anna were received by Mathias outside his house, and she had to admit he were a good looking fellow.

Anna: “Hello Mathias I got your letter and invitation. Forgive me but I am tired from the long trip and recent events, could you show me my bedchamber?”

Mathias: “Of course my lady. This way.” They walked upstairs. “So, how did the trip go?”

Anna: “Oh you know, I was at the sea. It were little space on the ship and it made me sick and I had no access to.. decent food. It could have been better. How have things been in Bordeaux?”

Mathias: “Things are going well here. Weather has been very nice and trade has been going well. I really like this place, even though half of the population speaks French. Maybe I should learn it?”

Anna: “Bah! Why would you learn such a language? To mingle with the peasants? But again, you seem like a young and smart man, perhaps you can use it to your advantage”. Entering the room. “Oh so this is it.. Well very well. Now do you have any plans for the future?”

Mathias: “I think I’m going to continue with trading. But I want to get some more important work from the Crown eventually.”

Anna: “You seem to have a knack for more political and diplomatic works. The Queen recognized your proposals in the Assembly after all. My sources tell me the Queen need new judges for her courts, perhaps a career in the law could be something for you? Alas, I need to rest and unpack my things. Can I meet you in the living room later?”

Mathias: “Of course. I will make us something to eat.”

Anna: “Good then, I will meet you later”.

Later that day Anna had dressed herself in her finest dress and the necklace from Mathias to impress, and conceal, and were ready for more talk in the too small house.
“The meal look lovely Mathias, now have you thought more about my question?”

Mathias: “About that I could become judge? Actually yes. It could be interesting career, but is it for me?”

Anna: “Well, I can’t answer that. However you seem to have a sharp mind getting recognition from the Queen herself for your policies, improving the trade here in these lands. And you seem to be able to learn new languages. Perhaps becoming a Judge would give you political prestige you perhaps long after?”

Mathias: “Okey, I will ask Queen herself for Judge career. Maybe I will get some real power in the politics. But how the food tastes?”

Anna: “The chicken were lovely, thank you for the meal. It is good that you will consider that, perhaps you can go away from this inferior land and back to splendid London. Now let us finish the meal!”

After the dinner was eaten Mathias brought some wine.
“My lady want any?”

Anna: “Sure thank you very much, but only some. Mmm it taste good, much better than the last vintage! Now let me ask you Mathias, why did you invite me here? I think you know why I sent you the letter, now why did you want me here? Don’t misunderstand, I am glad for your invitation.”

Mathias: “Well, after seeing how you called me ‘friend’ and even asked for support I thought it would have bee good time to meet each other.”

Anna: “Hmm good point”. Anna looked in her wine. “Now, do you consider me a friend, and what do you think of what happened?”

Mathias: “Well, I do consider you as my friend.” Mathias smiled and continued “And about the assassination of Pope. He deserved to die. He was so corrupt! Maybe even bribed our Chancellor...”

Anna: “It is good that someone share my views, although the assassination were only committed by my husband. I hope I will have your support in case of any trials against my name?” Anna paused, and looked deep into Mathias. “It’s been hard to no longer have any by my side. Are you married?”

Mathias was shocked. Did she just ask was he married? “I’m not married… Why you ask?” Only now Mathias saw how attractive Anna was. They looked at each other. Very deep in each other's’ eyes…

Anna: “Oh, I was only interested in your life. Pardon me for being so forward. But I was just interested in hearing if you were married, or had someone on your mind. Now, why do you look so intently on me?”

Mathias: “Oh… I'm sorry!” Mathias was deep in his thoughts.

Anna: “No, don’t be sorry. Now young Mathias, do you think I am attractive? Of course you do. What would you say to marry into a noble house?”

Mathias: “Marry into noble house? You mean… we get married?” Mathias didn’t understand why Anna would want to marry poor courtier.

Anna: “Why not? It would been an honor for you, and you seem to be a rising star in England. Of course it need to be secret if you want to become a Judge. Especially if you will have me in your trial. Think of what we could achieve together, if you became a master of the coin or a high judge!”

Mathias: “We could achieve many things… I’m just confused why would noble like you marry poor courtier. I mean, even if I become judge, I’m would still be just normal commoner.”

Anna: “Well, I have already been married to a noble and still have connections to them through my two children. Now your family have some history revolving around your father. Being a prominent figure in the Canterburian confession and in Anglica. Also if you pursue your merchant and judge career, you will be more than worthy to marry me. And of course, we both know that you attracted to me. So what do you have to lose?”

Mathias blushed. Usually it was man who tried to charm woman. Not other way around.

Mathias: “I won’t lose anything… And don’t get me wrong! I would love to marry you.” Mathias cannot believe it. Did he just say that?

Anna: “Very well”. Anna leaned over and kissed Mathias. “It is settled, we will marry in secrecy, and you will apply for being a Judge, and perhaps even Master of the Coin in the future. When all of these accusations against me are over we can marry in public. Now I am tired, can you follow me.. to my room?”

Mathias nodded as he understood the hint. The two spend the next night in the bedroom. Just together… Anna stayed in Bordeaux for couple of days, before going back to Oslo.

English economy needs improvement right away! Mathias made a list for King of what to do.

Economy Plan of England 1503

Ultimate Goal: Get more money and pay the loan. English economy is not the best at the moment

  1. Henry Frederick Cumberland wants too much money from England compared to his importance as advisor. I would fire him as he is not very helpful at the moment of being.
  2. Once we have enough money, repay our loan
  3. Build market in Normandie
  4. When money allows it, build 5 barques for trading in English Channel
  5. Save. We need more money for future
side note: I can discuss with Commander of Forces about spending money on army.

The plan is open for changes from King or Commander of Forces.

((Edit: Made in rush. Fixed A LOT))

My king, condolences with the death of your grandmother. This is a loss for all of England. I would suggest you to make the day she died a national day, a day were we shall all mourn the great queen that was a saint, and the queen that eliminated corruption in the English church. The great queen that reinstalled our rule over France, and beat back a crusade by the corrupt pope. She expanded the English kingdom to great strengths. She shall be missed. I trust that your reign shall be as glorious, as great and maybe even greater than her reign. May God bless her soul, and may God bless your soul too.

- William-Alexander Walpole, count of Meath

My king, I request my retirement from my position of diplomat. I have recently hit the old age of 68, and if my request is granted, I recommend my grandson William-Alexander as my replacement. On some of my last missions I have taken him with me to see how I do my work, and I think he got quite the hang of the work.

William-Alexander Walpole's Expansion plan

1. Send mercenaries to Anglica to conquer Aztec and Maya lands.
2. We shall not expand inside Europe for now. We shall wait until the people on the mainland have calmed down.
3. Try to conquer the Inca lands which are rich with gold and silver, which may help our economy recover. I would place our focuses on the great mountain of silver called Mt. Potosi.
4. If our relations allow it, conquer the province of Dalaskogen from Sweden, which produces huge amounts of copper, which we could certainly use.

King Henry had not much time to study the new plan of Master of Coin Mathias Northwell because he was busy preparing the funeral of the late Queen but from what his advisors told him, the plan was solid. Hopefully, he made the right call in entrusting a commoner with such a prestigious office.
Then there was the matter of the Walpoles. Henry Walpole had served as a diplomat for decades and while he never reached the position of chancellor, mostly because of his family's reputation, Henry valued the advice from a such experienced man in the art of diplomacy.

((To Henry Walpole))
The news of your retirement saddens me but your reasoning is clearly understandable. You served the late Queen loyal and I hope that you can make it to her funeral despite your advanced age. I thank you for your service and will consider your suggestion of giving your grandson William-Alexander a spot in the Royal Diplomatic Corps. His proposed expansion plan shows that he understands the precarious situation the realm finds itself in on the European continent because of the unfavourable Treaty of Avignon.

~ Henry VII Lancaster, King of England, King of France, King of Scotland, King of Norway, Archduke of Austria, Duke of Aquitaine

((To William-Alexander Walpole))
It is most kind of you to take the moment to write me in this sad moment. Thank you for your condolences. Will you make it to Canterbury for the late Queen's funeral?

On a different note, as you probably already know, your grandfather Henry has retired as diplomat and he is suggesting that you enrol into the Royal Diplomatic Corps. Your proposed expansion plan is to my liking and I feel you could continue the long tradition of the Walpole dynasty of serving the realm as loyal diplomats. I hope you accept my offer.
