That's not a bad spread for 8 empires in a galaxy that large. Sure, the right side of the galaxy is uninhabited, but the fun of playthroughs like that in my opinion is the focus on colonization after the early game instead of expansion by conquest.

So what do you want random placement to do here? Nicely and evenly place them at equal distances?

"Random" means they could end up any where, as opposed to "clustered" meaning there's a couple of groupings.

and think of the primitives out there.. there's probably at least 6-10 over there that will eventually become space fairing.. when they pop onto the scene they may establish massive empires

It doesn't look and isn't random is the problem, it is still clustered.
Are you sure about that? What does "looking random" mean?

I can roll 6 dice and get a sequence of 1,2,3,4,5,6. Does that mean my dice aren't random?

I can shuffle a deck of cards and cut 4 spades in a row... does that make the deck order non-random?

You don't seem to understand what "random" means. That is NOT what random means. What you want is either a uniform distribution if you want empires spread out evenly or alternatively, if you don't want that, I don't understand what the fuck your problem is because I fail to see how there would be any other meaningfull option than "clusters", "random" and "uniform" that in some way make sense as an empire distrubution. If you want uniform distribution you will need to search for a mod because the basegame does not supply that, but if you actually put in a sensible amount of empires "random" will be close enaugh to "random" anyways.

Edit: Oops, last "random" was meant to be "uniform"

Two of them are literally on opposite sides of the galaxy. Random does things like this that's why its random and computers have a hard time being truly random they tend to fall into patterns after a while. If you can show me a thousand different pictures of the random setting clustering empires together in a role then you would have better evidence of what you are trying to say.

what the op is showing is random, you could have all the empires right next to each other borders touching, you could have all the empires except for yours on one side of the galaxy while your empire is on the other side of the galaxy. Shoot you can have your empire spawn right inside of a fallen empire and let me tell you that has happened to me twice and makes for excellent protection well for awhile that is. Random is again all over the place and doesn't make sense, if the op wants uniform then should get the mod clustered starts

That's also not how pseudo random numbers work buddy. Paradox are not total noobs, they will have taken a proper pseudo random number generator and added a sensible distribution function. Random means random. Random does not mean "not ordered". You could randomly generate a perfectly ordered galaxy and it would stil be randomly generated. Random means just "what you get is entirely up to chance". Random could just as well mean "all empires are squeezed into the upper left corner and the rest is empty space". And with a proper distribution function this should be no problem, heck, the damn c++ standard library has some, it isn't hard to do.

You two both seem to not understand what random means and apply your half-knowledge about programming and pseudo randomness. The entire search space simply contains a metric fuck ton more potential results that kinda sorta look somewhere between uniform and batshit cracy. Random does not meant that it will be allways batshit cracy and if that isn't what you think I am all out of wit what the actual fuck you are actually on about and what you want from me.

You seem to have misunderstood what I was saying here. What I was trying to do was disprove what the op was saying, if the map was clustered like he was saying those two would have been much much close then shown in the picture. The second thing is true, computers no matter how they are program tend to fall into patterns after millions of Radom number generates, but is nothing about how the game it self is programed, I have no issue with the randomness in the game. The third is just about showing proper evidence to back up his claims, one picture is not a proper sample size to back up what he is trying to say and I don't think a thousand would either it might show some patterns about how it works but would not disprove randomness. I also do not see where you get "not ordered" from my post I only comment about one piece of the map the part that best show that the empires are not clustered.

A spread option would be very nice.
I guess the OP is the light brown or purple empire. If so i must admit i can feel with him. Even the random tends to have me boxed in between at least 2 empires even with only half of maximum number of starting AI empires. Only with a low number the game seems to give some breathing room.
Though my last game with a similar setting (1000 stars, 4 FE, very low number of AI empires) had them spread very nicely.
