The Spanish seem quite keen on jailing populists with charisma > 3 - good idea?

Ok. so having nothing better to do I went to the EU:Rome in Spanish forum and, bearing in mind I don't speak Spanish, got the gist of a thread suggesting jailing (or executing) any populists with a charisma greater than 3.

Good advice?

BTW the forum seemed very civilised.

I like killing populists, but I don't think it's a good idea to murder ALL of them. Every point of tyranny will give you +0.1 global revolt risk. Sounds like great fun, though. Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition. ;)

I gess you are talking about my advices.
Well, I only kill populists if my chance is bigger than 80%. A "safer" way to kill them is to use them to declare a war (gauls are very usefull) ;)
I put them in jail just before the consular election, so tyranny drops instantly. Of course, I let every "goood for nothing" character (charisma=0 and low finnesse and militar stats) to became populist (don't give them what they want). That way, I have a populist faction of about 5 - 8 characters, not harmfull at all :D

And about our spanish forum being civilised, remember that we were romaniced very soon ;)

PD: sorry about my poor english.

I wouldn't kill all of them, too. You should just go for the ones you can easily beat. Making them declaring a war is also a good option but does not work in each case. I haven't done this very often but I will come back to it some day.

I have found that by ignoring them and focusing on say, the religious faction, the populists take care of themselves. I have a Senate made up of 69 Religious Senators. I have 1 Populist Senator but lots of populist characters.. BUT: I have found that every once and a while a Populist becomes the likely next consul. So THEN I take them out. I also give everyone who has the trait: WANTS A TITLE, a minor title that way populist power is lowered. I make sure that Populists never get ANY employment except for governor jobs so their faction will change..

Yeah its fun to wipe out the populists, however i have experience twice that if you go too hard to work (ie kill or imprison all male characters) a member of another fraction (both times it was a high ranking civic member) takes the role as leader of the populists, and then the game gets abit weird, because he still are marked as civic member AND at the same time populists leader, and both groups get benefits for his popularity.

Yes, I have experienced the same as Sneaking Viper. I always keep bad 0 or 1 charisma characters as populists (just not giving them what they want). In that way you have a nice, harmless, populist faction :D
