im curious when you annex a country that still has some division or ships do they automatically become yours when you annex it?

I am not sure. Most of the territories I have under my control have governments that are in exile. So I have yet to annex any nations but Iraq and when I released them they suddenly had their own units. So I don't think you get the units of the annexed nation - I think they disappear. On the other hand, when Republican Spain surrendered I got their military units BUT that was a Civil War and could have been a special case.

So, in other words, I don't l know.

Well I'm back yet again, good to see this is going still :)

You only managed to sink that many convoys even with unrestricted? Ouch :\

To be honest I don't think my subs are in a target rich area. If I could push them closer to a coast of a Allies nation I bet I could do better - but that would put them within reach of the Allies' navies. :(

What I often find works against the Brits as Germany is to convoy raid a particular area for a week or two, and then move them somewhere else. The AI reacts to the sinkings I tend to find, and I usually get a lot of convoys sunk before the British manage to sink anything, and that's usually because I forget to move them. Maybe such a strategy could work?

I could try that - but I think my subs don't have the range to reach waters where the Allies are active. Ports, ports, ports. Ports seem to be the most important thing in Asia for me right now!

The Spanish Civil War AAR :The Soul of Spain.

Chapter One Hundred-Fifty : March 1946

kBTvojG.jpg

German soldier in India resting during a peaceful period

Franco reviewed his choices at the start of March. He was worried about Asia. He was also worried that the war between the Axis and the Allies was becoming a never ending conflict as neither side seemed to be gaining over the other. True, the UK and France were out of the picture. But the Americans plus the rest of the Allies more than made up for that loss.

DgMSKKp.jpg

Africa was bad. Many of the ports along the coast belonged to the Allies who were using them to house subs and destroyers. These units were causing the Spanish grief in attacking their conveys. It had been from such ports that his Battle Fleet had been attacked by American warships. Without taking those ports it was unlikely he could change the state of affairs in Africa.

LQn9rac.jpg

The South Pacific was a painful situation. On one hand, it was islands full of resources and ports that would allow for ease of transportation. On the other hand, it seemed that the Allies had total control of the waters and islands. The Japanese had totally failed to launch any offensives in the region and now the Axis was paying for it.

On the 5th of March the Chinese forces launched an all-out attack against the European Axis and started to PUSH them back into India. It seems the Chinese felt they had enough men, equipment, and supplies to finally push the Axis out of Asia.

Franco saw an advantage in this. If the Chinese lines moved west far enough then the Far East Command could land forces in Chittagong and hit the enemy from behind.

yEOb2K1.jpg

By the 8th all of the Far East Command was really to board the transports. The FE First Cavalry Division, a unit from Bulgaria, was left behind to guard the port and protect the submarines from land attack.

EqKY5wF.jpg

On the 11th the Spanish forces hit the few defenders of the port of Chittagong. It looked like an easy victory. But things had changed.

7fX3fAf.jpg

While the operation was being organized the Axis forces in India had counter attacked. While the Chinese forces had gained some land they were outnumbered and, to be honest, armed with primitive weapons when compared to the Europeans. They had pushed deep into enemy territory and were now surrounded. The Axis soon sliced into the Chinese lines, cutting off pieces of the Chinese lines, creating pockets. Those Chinese troops not trapped were forced to withdraw. Many of these troops were retreating back into Chittagong.

pacdatm.jpg

The longer the battle raged the stronger the defenders became. In fact by the 13th the Chinese defenders were getting organized under a proper commander and getting reinforced with more soldiers retreating from the Axis counter attack.

1bhAaf6.jpg

By the 23rd the Spanish commander on the scene reported that victory was, at this point, impossible.

And the Axis forces, after tossing back the Chinese attack, were doing nothing. This allowed the Chinese forces to stabilize their lines and send more reinforcements into Chittagong. Even the use of Spanish warships to rain death onto the defenders were doing little to help the Spanish mountain infantry and cavalry.

By the end of the month it was clear that the lines in Asia between the Europeans and the Guangxi Clique was pretty much stable again. They would NOT be coming to help Spain in the battle for Chittagong.

Franco was becoming more and more annoyed with his allies. “With friends like these!” he would grumble, crumbling up reports and tossing them across the room. Maybe he should had joined the Allies?

Worse, by the end of the month Spain had lost 4 transports and 2 escorts to only 1 transport lost by the Allies. It was salt in the wounds.

do you think you should have joined the allies but if so could you have holdout against the Germans?

To be honest I am not sure. I don't think the Allies would have invited me unless I had worked from the start to join them and, with the defeat of the Republic, I don't think that would have been easy for me. I think I would have ended up joining just in time for Germany to defeat France and steamroll me.

On the other hand, if I could have joined the Allies early enough, France could have focused totally on Germany while England, and later the USA, could have used Spain as a foothold in Europe. Right now they can't even touch Africa!

what would be the minimum number of divisions you would had needed to fight the axis if you have gone allied?

No idea. The border with France is small and has mountains - so maybe my current numbers would have worked. But Germany could likely bring more manpower and better equipment to the battlefield. In the end, once pushed into Spain, they could have flooded the nation with units. Slowly, due to the nature of the landscape, but I think Germany will likely always defeat Spain in a nation-vs-nation head-on conflict.

As it is the Axis will win unless there are major changes in the next few years. But for the readers of this thread it will likely be boring years. :)

Chapter One Hundred-Fifty-One : April 1946

EPsytua.jpg

Exhausted Chinese Troops

sHbwFrr.jpg
VMS0tQ2.jpg

The Chinese defenders were given a shock on the morning of the first of April when the drone of engines was heard overhead. The shock was soon followed by bombs. Sadly for the Spanish Air Force they were able to only launch two ground attacks before being grounded. The supplies reaching Asia were too little to support the Spanish SAC Group AND the millions of Axis soldiers in the region.

RP8mK6x.jpg

On top of that the Axis had, as the Americans would say, dropped the ball. The Chinese forces trapped in the pocket had ESCAPED and the Axis units had become disorganized and confused. Or maybe that was their normal state at this point?

29Ahm2Q.jpg

On the 16th a new Flotilla of new Destroyers launched from Valencia and headed to the Indian Ocean to join the 2 Battle Group in escorting the local waters.

ycjA9s2.jpg

On the 17th the Spanish ships ran into ships of the UK. They won, with no sides losing any ships, but it alarmed Franco and the Naval staff. Because the battle happened inside the Mediterranean! This took Franco’s mind off the Far East, for a few hours, as he and his staff tried to figure out how the British still had ships in the Italian Lake.

jlKmhDU.jpg

Two days later the report of the Spanish defeat was delivered to Franco by a sweating staff member who had to wake him up just after midnight. 4,862 Spanish troops had been lost while the Chinese had lost only 1,954 men. Franco spent much of the morning by himself, pondering the future of the Far East Command.

lBlXGjx.jpg

The Far East units were ordered to withdraw to Dumai to lick their wounds and rest in a safe port.

On the 20th it was announced that more coastal forts had been built in Laayoune but Franco was not in the mood to joke about it anymore.

NoByhxm.jpg

By the 22nd the Destroyers joined the 2 Battle Group at the Nicobar Islands and the Group returned to convey escorting.

E8urym3.jpg

On the 24th the SAC Group returned to the Italian controlled island of Trincomalee. There they could get fuel and ammunitions without fighting over every round with fellow allies.

Sadly, by the end of the month, the Allies had sunk 7 Spanish cargo ships, mostly by American and French raiders off the coast of Africa, while the Spanish subs had nothing to show for their work in Asian waters.

Franco was so tired he felt almost empty. He couldn’t even find the energy to get mad at his useless allies.

Chapter One Hundred-Fifty-Two : May 1946

"We are withdrawing from Asia," Franco announced one the First of May.

This statement was met with silence by the staff.

"Africa has becoming a big problem. Our coveys are being hit again and again," continued Franco. "I want the Far East Command transferred to Africa to start taking the enemy ports. I want to stop those raiders. We will use their experience to hit those provinces from the sea."

"But Asia..." said one of the older staff members. "I mean, the Dutch or Americans will take back the ports. They will be able to send their ships into the Indian Ocean."

"They can do that now," pointed out Franco. "They can easily take those ports from us. And why didn't they use them before? I think the Americans have reached the end of their own supply leash. I also think they are also totally focused on the Japanese forces."

There was some mumbling but nobody was willing to disagree with the Spanish leader. His logic was sound.

"And on top of that," remarked Franco with a wave towards the map of the South Pacific, "we can't send ships in there. We know the Americans are there in force. In fact that's the only place they are in force. Our battleships have already been given a taste of the power of the American aircraft carriers. No, we will not be winning a naval war against the Allied forces."

All the Far East Divisions, plus ships and aircraft were ordered to Africa that very day.

The next day the staff found Franco sitting in the corner of the War Room, his head in his hands, making a noise that was either crying or laughing. A crumbled note lay at his feet. One of the senior staff members picked it up and showed it to his fellow officers. The Foreign Minister had reported that Nationalist China had surrendered to the Japanese.

The next few day the Spanish high Command spent its time redeploying the Far East Forces to the provinces in Africa or the Island of Sao Tome.

By the 4th all the Air Force units had assembled on the island’s airfields. That same day the 2 Battle Group and the two Sub Groups left from the islands of Nicobar.

A map of the Far East, created for Franco’s War Room, showed that Nationalist China was now firmly in the Axis camp.

The next day they formally declared war on the Allies. By doing so they would turn the once stable front lines of the Chinese forces, which had held off the Axis forces for years, into a something looking more like a broken jigsaw puzzle.

“Now as we wait for our men and equipment to arrive in Africa we can relax,” stated Franco. In fact he would spend the rest of the month relaxing, horse riding, and visiting friends.

On the 13th Norway signed a Non-Aggression Pact with Denmark. On the 19th Poland signed a Non-Aggression Pact with Norway. Franco had enough humor to joke about it in the press.

“It’s just the Allies trying to confuse us,” he remarked to the newspaper reports over a late dinner.

When it was announced on the 22nd that Spain had gained the territory of Myitkyina, a province in Burma, Franco really had no information to give the reporters. It took hours for him and his staff to figure out what was going on. It seemed German divisions, under the command of the Iraqi High Command, had taken the province and handed over control of it to Spain.

4 days later the same divisions took Tamanthi for the glory of Spain. The last of the Chinese soldiers of the Guangxi Clique fighting the Axis forces were trapped in pockets, surrounded by European and Asian enemy units. Many of the units holding the lines had been Nationalists who now fought for the other side.

Franco couldn’t be more pleased. “Now the Japanese will soon have secured all of the mainland of Asia, making it a naval war,” he remarked. “If the American want to win now they will have to launch a major invasion without local support.”

At the end of the month the Navy’s report of 2 Spanish supply ships sunk with a escort did nothing to damage Franco’s good humor. The Far East Command had arrived in Africa, and along side the Bata Command, was preparing for battle.

nicely done but now you have random parts of Asia under your control too bad the Japanese cant give you the Philippines back
Thanks, but I did nothing. I am even sure what happened - I kept searching for where the Chinese lost that VP to tilt them into defeat but by the time I decided to look for it the lines were changing too fast. With the surrendering of the Nationalists the lines have totally collapsed and the Japanese/Chinese/Iraqi/Axis forces are sliced through the enemy territories like a hot knife through butter.

I would trade Japan those pieces of Burma for the Philippines but the Japanese don't own them. They focused totally on the land war on the mainland and ignored the islands.
