is it just me, or do some of the countries have way to many regions? for example, france, the US and britain have lots of 3-province regions, which just makes the game unmanageable. For example, why split scotland into 2 regions? it's not like it's likely to be conquered or anything...

IMO, regions should be around 5-7 provinces to be manageable (except perhaps for some very small countries).

is this something that may be changed in a future patch, or should i just forget about playing the majors mentioned above?

sweden, by the way, is perfectly laid out. götaland, svealand and norrland are just about the right number of provinces.

I agree that it seems a little silly, but it balances the game - keeps the UK from conquering the entire world etc. for the USA it doesn't matter so much because they get so much immigration - When I play USA, those small 1-province states often have 5-10 or even more factories running at 100% !! ;)

i way talking more from a micromanagement perspective. it simply gets tedious when you try to balance production in a chain of goods (lumber->furniture->luxury furniture etc) when the factories are spread out over a million different regions...

i don't actually mind pop merging all that much. i guess i'm in the minority on that ;)

well, to us europeans, many of whose countries are divided in more or less arbitrary states in the game, it wouldn't matter to have the US divided a little ahistorically ;) But, IMHO, the gameplay doesn't suffer that much from too small states as USA. For Russia... now that's a different story.... Not so for the UK, even tho they have a ton of provinces, I often only play around with a few of them - the ones that can get industrialized. India - all I ever do with POPs there is convert a few to soldiers when there's a big war on. :)

There are huge regions and very small ones. It is very odd that to build a railway in Luxemburg cost as much as to build one in USA or Siberia. The same problem I have is that converting 300 POP cost as much as converting 100,000 POP.

$0.02 but who cares any way

when playing the netherlands yesterday i noticed that their colony Java, once i colonized some nearby islands, contained 42 provinces. and this in a single region. this may be a bit on the huge side, as far as regions go...

I sort of like the idea of the states and I like the idea of having the little provences of many areas. One is forgetting that in Asia, there were a lot of little tiny independent states with its own different culture. Look at India, land of 100,000 tongues or Indonesia, with the stifle between the islands. The very small provences are great because they are as close to real as we can get.
Just ask all those Germans who still have those noble tittles.

The problem with Java is that there are so many Aristocrat POPs in the State and each of them benefit every RGO in the State. It's really a huge tax revenue benefit for the owner.

yes, i found the netherlands to be a rather easy country to play. also, once i realized that when i converted a few of those millions of javanese and melanese to craftsmen, they immediately started flooding to dutch guyana (which i had granted statehood) it became even easier...

I thought Aristocrat POPs only benefitted RGOs in their province? Tho' admittedly, I'm not certain of this at all.

The biggest proble with Java is that its population is too large by a factor of 6!!!!!!!

and the rural french population probably too low, even if not in this ratio. ;)

I think it is a big problem that costs and productions are not proportionable : costs for raising the POPs social status, productions of 4 small POPs compared to one big POP or even the POP resulting of the merging etc.

anyways, I find french division historically & geographically coherent - as the US States. It's more management? Well, yes. But it is coherent. Having France divided in arbitrary regions would make me sick - as others wouldn't like an ungrouping of the US States.....
