The Shroud is totally going to be Stellaris version of W40K's "Warp". Which is great, as long as they compliment it with psy powers a la "the Force" and who knows? Perhaps one's galactic civilization can become better, kinder gods than the Unbidden...

...parallel universe...
This would be awesome! I wonder what Mirror Universe Shroud Blorg would be like?

And Shroud Commonwealth of Man?

But I'm really expecting something about psionics, as the next DD will be about The Shroud AND Psionic Ascension, whatever that might be. I'd say they're connected.

I like the idea of a barrier you break which shows then another "layer of reality" in which you can see other transcended species. And maybe even interact with the "mortal plane"?
This is exactly what it sounds like to me, and I would expect the Unbidden to be one of the more powerful of those new species, but I don't see why you need to "break the barrier" why not just pass through it? Breaking it implies releasing all that stuff into our Universe all at once, or at least allowing other Empires to enter in once you have opened up a portal, I want to see Spiritualist Empire transition peacefully into Ascension, it doesn't need to be filled with explosions to make it cool! I am sure the Shroud will be cool all by itself.

Oh they are definitely connected. I don't know if it would be so in-depth as to make copies of every possible Empire though.

Agreed that The Shroud could just be the way/name to achieve the Synthetic Victory from the Ascension perks. Wiz did state that these victories will be long term in achieving taking events and special projects to complete.

Hopefully the Shroud doesn't refer to the Jovian Pox. If it can wipe out the entire galaxy once, it can certainly do it again. I think it would be cool if one of the higher level society (genetics) research techs was flagged as 'dangerous'... and upon researching it, gave a chance to spawn the dreaded Jovian Pox... which would spread thru the galaxy with a (CK2: Reaper's Due) st yle of fervor.. and totally lay waste. galactic plagues are a thing of beauty. (if you're messed up like me) ;)

Ahh now that would be interesting. Having a real plague go across the galaxy and having to cure it, quarantine planets, or....even let it spread to thin the competition.

Planetary Defense System, The Shroud prevents ship borne sensors from immediately detecting the planet. Extended sensor sweeps will reveal it's location and thus it's only a stop gap measure providing space defenses greater response times.

No that's not true, but I like it.

Heh....suppose you could be onto something and we're all coming from the wrong angle. Shroud COULD refer to some sort of planetary/system sensor shroud. Fairly standard scifi trope, mysterious, elusive race whos home-world is hidden from the galaxy.

I'm still unconvinced that the Unbidden are related to the Psionics stuff.

Psionics has nothing to do with summoning them and, as far as I know, has no impact on any of their events- its Jump Drives that trigger their invasion.

My thoughts are that The Shroud refers to a new event chain(s) or end game crisis. Instead of a creature or entity spreading across the galaxy in spaceships, colonies and planets will just blink out of existence without explanation. Instead of fighting it with guns you have to scurry around with Science Ships or something to stop it, and follow a series of event chains before you're doomed.

Entire legions of Stellaris players will rage when the final system they need to survey ends up with their survey ship being eaten 2% from being finished with the chain, breaking it forever.

The Unbidden have a small chance to be triggered everytime a Jump Drive is used, and a medium chance of being triggered every time a Psi Jump Drive is used. The finale of the Psionics Tech Group, is the Psi Jump Drive, which besides being weighted towards summoning the Unbidden, is described as using "another Dimension" to transport ships long distances quickly. It is abundantly clear the Psi Jump Drives pass directly through the Unbidden's realm and are in fact the only technology to do so, the Unbidden are clearly intimately linked with the Spiritualist Ethos.

Where does it say 'another dimension'? Both jump drive descriptions mention messing with the fabric of reality. The Psi Jump Drive just does it in a different way. Also, there is an equal chance with either jump drive, according to wiki, but I'll look in the event file.

Code:
    mean_time_to_happen = {
        # 2k years
        months = 24000
        # 200 years if empire has jump drive
        modifier = {
            factor = 0.1
            is_country_type = default
            OR = {
                has_technology = "tech_jump_drive_1"
                has_technology = "tech_psi_jump_drive_1"
            }
        }
        # 20 years if empire has both jump drives
        modifier = {
            factor = 0.1
            is_country_type = default
            has_technology = "tech_jump_drive_1"
            has_technology = "tech_psi_jump_drive_1"
        }

It's the same for either jump drive type.

Not true,
Unbidden can trigger if any normal empire has researched level 3 FTL with MTTH of 2000 years.
if any normal empire has researched one of the jump drives techs then it is reduced to MTTH of 200 years,
if any normal empire has researched both jump drives then it is reduced to MTTH of 20 years.

Yeah, if you somehow have NO spiritual empires, the Unbidden can still spawn, so, there is no connection between the two.

There's also an event where you get a free science ship which looks like the Unbidden ships, which may or may not be from the same dimension as the Unbidden.

As shown above, not true. Psionics has no special effect on things- it is purely the use of the Jump Drive that attracts them.

I will point it out this way. Materialist Empires, because of their Behaviors, are statistically the most likely to start the AI Rebellion. Spiritualist Empires, because of Psionics, are statistically the most likely to summon the Unbidden. While the Prethoryn are not likely to be summoned by any particular Ethos statistically speaking.

Materialists have a special path of Ascension that has to do with their Ethos. Spiritualists have a special path of Ascension that has to do with their Ethos. The third ascension path is not tied directly to any Ethos.

Is there not a clear pattern here?
