A further report reached Ozawa on March 29th. An American Transport fleet had been spotted in the Yap Trench and was probably trying to invade Ngulu. Why the Americans considered this island important was something Ozawa could not work out but the invasion would be stopped by the Submarines. This would not prevent this Transport fleet returning several times to try again as the Submarines failed to sink it. One of the two divisions from Yap was ordered to move to Ngulu to defend the island just in case any more throrough invasion plans materialised from the Americans.

The Tactical bombers from Guadalcanal had spent the previous day bombing the garrison on Noumea to reduce its organisation prior to an amphibious assault. Yokoyama Isa led the two Japanese infantry divisions conducting this attack with support from BB Division 2. The battle was over quickly as the garrison surrendered. The bombers would return to the port of Noumea the next day to finish off the remainder of English's fleet while the troops waded ashore.

The Transport fleet that had dropped off the infantry division on New Ireland was not so fortunate as it tried to leave the port. BB Division 1 would find it during the night as visibility was good. IJN Yamashiro would sink the Mexican Transports.

The Light Carrier and Destroyer Division still in Noumea were sunk during the early hours of March 30th which would free the bombers up for other rolls.

Teiji Takagi had completed research into Improved Decryption Devices which would cancel the advantage the Allies had been having in this area.

Yamashita, who was already commanding an Infantry Corps and Interceptor wing, was tasked with improving Japanese hospital systems to prevent wounds turning into fatalities. Japan would need to conserve as much manpower as possible for years to come and this small measure would help to achieve that goal.

Ozawa was confident that the entire New Hebreides chain would shortly be under Japanese control for the first time. His attention turned further south. The forces that should have been moving into this area should have come from Australia, but the delay during that offensive had allowed troops from further north to become available first so Ozawa would use them.

mar30461400gr1.jpg

The two divisions that had captured the minor islands in the south of the New Hebreides were picked up again by their Transport ships and were ordered south towards Fiji. BB Division 2 would escort them again. Troops needed to invade New Zealand were on their way from Perth under the watchful eye of BB Division 3 but they were still a few days away. The airbase on Vanua Levu would be needed to support further attacks in this area as only the longest ranged Tactical bombers could reach this far south from Noumea once it was captured.

Mamoru was making sure that he had everything that he needed for the forthcoming meeting of the Cabinet with His Imperial Majesty Hirohito when his assistant knocked on the door.

"Make it quick I have a meeting to go to." Mamoru said.

"My apologies Minister Mamoru but the Soviet Ambassador wishes an audience immediately. He is being particularly stubborn about seeing you before your meeting with the Emperor."

"I guess there is always time to improve our trade agreements so long as he is quick about it." Mamoru replied as his assistant went back outside to show the Ambassador in.

"Please accept my apologies for being so forceful Minister Mamoru but my superiors were most insistant that you are made aware of certain details before your scheduled meeting." the Ambassador stated.

"I am sure you had good reason for such haste Ambassador. What is so urgent?" Mamoru asked.

The response would see the Japanese Foreign Minister late for another meeting as he searched for more information that he would need for his briefing. He hoped the Emperor was in a forgiving mood today, although not too forgiving.

I don't think it is war yet myself.

Anyways nice update, I had to laugh at Nimitz commanding a Submarine.

A pre-emptive surrender, surely? The Minister's new-found addiction to tea cannot survive the possibility of a shortage of this in an environment where there is war between the U.d.S.S.R. and the empire.

"The acqusition of tea is indeed the precondition of any modern empire, and through it, one may rule the world."
(Preamble to the classified documents concerning preparations for the invasion of India, Imperial War Ministry)

It is excellent to note the positive propaganda surrounding the (impossible) Russian capture of any lands belonging to the Emperor. It would seem that all the enemy would gain are further problems, and that it is (almost) a relief to loose such issues of partisans and supply, etc. They would *nearly* be doing the Empire a favour, it would seem.

I can send ya some cows, could you send me your current savegame? I want to see some of the smaller aspects of your game like i know one of your BB's has like 30+ ships sunk. I would love to see that. If possible send to gen_deutsch1@yahoo.com

Also, any chance of furthering your armoured corp? It's not as manpower intensive and could become useful coming up.

Armour for Remble is useless because of:

A) The type of terrain he will be fighting on

B) Requires more IC, which he can't spare.

C) As far as I know he is far behind on Armour techs, there fore his Tanks will only get pwned by the Russians.

energy crisis started again. you can think on an earlier doW on SU. Afghanistan and Persia may help you out your lack of energy a little bit...

if remble would attack persia and afghanistan, he would have a much bigger frontline tto defend and that wouldn´t be good. I don´t think he hasn´t got the required troops for such a campaign...

Ah, interesting to see Nimitz in command of a submarine. Given that he was one of the proponents of unrestricted submarine warfare against Japan, wasn't he?

And talk about workaholic and multitasking for Yamashita! :p

I wonder if this is the dreaded moment, or is it just another trade proposal? :)

*drum roll*

The flourish will follow in the next update. :)

A strategy I would use against the Soviets in China would be to strategically redeploy my troops (or at least a majority) away from the front line instead of making them walk all the way to the next province.

Thus your bombers could do their work while your redeployed troops might even start counterattacks against Soviet divisions who arrive ahead of the main force.

Ouch. that would mean a TC >1000 :D

But on the other hand, the risk to be overrun by enemy tanks is something that exists not only in plains but in forests and hills as well, so strat redeploy has something...
I am soooo interested how remble manages to avoid being overrun. I don't think the bombers will always hit the right/most important enemy stacks.

you`re right but it would be easier to reach Caucasus and Ukraine. Is there any peace event between SU and Japan? then, the things can be planned on this situation.

Maj. von Mauser - I am sure Nimitz has been around but I can't remember seeing him until now.

Ruodnane - The Japanese High Command and Emperor have vanquished the United States they have nothing to fear from anyone else :)

genbrad, Maj. von Mauser - Maj. von Mauser is correct, armour would not really help me at this point. The save will be on its way after the update. I could have sent it before the update but I did not want to risk you hitting the unpause button

alan_le_cowboy - Oh its worse for me because I have to try and resist giving hints :D

_heikkinen, Dr Tommy - Welcome to the boards and this AAR :) We shall see what the Soviet Ambassador wanted shortly.

robou - According to the map there are a lot of Russians heading my way.

harezmi - Energy is not urgent, Australia had a fair bit which will be covered in the monthly reports.

Inner Circle - I will almost certainly go through Persia at some point but not until the Red Army is in trouble.

safferli - Yamashita is a gifted Commander to be sure. Nimitz had a lot to do with the American Submarine policy yes.

Tomatoes - Sorry, but this was one of those opportunities for drama that I could not possible pass up :D

stnylan, OneArmed - The next update will clarify the proposal.

Sokraates - I will strat deploy if needed and I expect I will need to at some point as its quicker than marching.

Thurak - I tend to be the only one allowed to over run things in my AAR's, I am much better at it than the AI :)

I suppose you all want to know what the Soviet Ambassador wanted?

Ok I shall show you :)

Update (April 1st 1946)

0000 April 1st 1946.
Imperial Palace. Tokyo, Japan.

His Majesty Emperor Hirohito looked around the room as he entered for the monthly meeting. "Prime Minister Hideki, there is supposed to be a Cabinet meeting now is there not?" He asked Hideki who was one of only four Cabinet Ministers present.

"Yes your Majesty." came the reply.

"Would you care to enlighten me as to why five of my Ministers are late?"

"They are on their way your Majesty, something came up rather suddenly that required them to bring additional material and alter a few plans. They should be no more than a few minutes longer. Please accept my apologies."

"This had better be good Prime Minister Hideki." stated the Emperor in a somewhat threatening voice.

"From what I can gather it is anything but good your Majesty. Any more than that I cannot say as I only received a hurried request for a short delay to the meeting."

The minutes ticked slowly by but the remaining Cabinet Ministers were indeed only a few minutes late. They hurried to their seats offering various apologies for their tardiness.

"Ok Gentlemen which one of you wishes to try and talk your way out of finding new employment?" asked Hirohito.

"Um ... That would be me your Majesty." came the reply from Minister Mamoru.

"Why am I not surprised Foreign Minister Mamoru."

"My apologies your Majesty but I was given absolutely no notice of this and I had to give the Military Ministers time to prepare something as well."

"I am almost certain that you will get to the point sometime soon Minister Mamoru." Hirohoto stated pointedly. "Let me guess, the Soviets decided to cancel their trade agreements."

"In a manner of speaking your Majesty. They were a little more direct about it." replied Mamoru.

"Oh?" asked Hirohito.

apr1460000gr.jpg

"They declared War your Majesty." Mamoru finally managed to say.

"A simple 'We no longer wish to trade our energy to you' would have sufficed." was the Emperor's offhand remark. "Our Soviet friends, or rather enemies now, never were very tactful Diplomatically. Their deployments have completed then Minister Kuniaki?"

"Not quite your Majesty. I estimate there are still more than one hundred Soviet divisions redeploying." Kuniaki replied.

"I wonder why they are in a hurry all of a sudden." Hirohito asked no-one in particular.

"I might be able to shed some light on the matter your Majesty." Mamoru replied. "The Allies have been increasing their Diplomatic pressure on the Soviets as a result of their losses. My sources indicate that those pleas finally found a sympathetic ear in the Kremlin. It seems that one of the Allied diplomats reminded Comrade Stalin that he had allowed Hitler two years to build up his forces and conquer a large part of Europe before those troops were released onto the Russian Steppes. There were apparently some somewhat raised voices when that diplomat asked if Stalin wished to make the same mistake twice."

"So rather than showing the Diplomat the door he decided to kill six million troops by sending them into the jungles and mountains of China just to save face?" said Hirohito.

"I am sure Stalin does not see it that way your Majesty." replied Mamuro. "And he is committing a very large Army against us. At the last count I believe the Red Army was larger than the combined Armed forces of the rest of the World."

"Unfortunately for Stalin he is not fighting the rest of the World, he is fighting Japan. I trust you and your Ministers have come up with a few modified plans Minister Tanigawa?" Hirohito asked his Chief of Staff.

"Of course your Majesty. I would like to ask for a postponement of Operation Mystery though your Majesty." Tanigawa replied.

"No. It goes ahead as planned."

"As you wish your Majesty." replied Tanigawa. "We should still be able to accomplish it although it might take a little while longer than originally anticipated. Needless to say the Soviet aggression caught us slightly by surprise but the only assets we are really missing in Asia are from the Imperial Japanese Air Force. Minister Jun will explain the redeployments in this regard and then Minister Satoru will outline the current situation on all Fronts." Tanigawa concluded.

"Thank you Minister Tanigawa. Good morning your Majesty, Gentlemen. As you are no doubt aware we currently have two operations which are using air units. Operation Obsolete is still ongoing but is drawing to a close and will hopefully conclude this coming month. Operation Mystery has not quite begun and needs very limited air support.

I will be ordering two full Interceptor wings to Korea and one to China to provide air defence. The remaining interceptors will continue to provide naval patrols in the Pacific. Five Close Air Support squadrons will move to Urumqi in north western China to bring the total force up to eight squadrons. The remaing six squadrons of this type will remain in the Pacific to support current operations. They are slated to go to Manchuria but the Soviet forces are outside their range for the time being and they can be held back for a while.

Five long range Tactical bombers will also remain in the Pacific to assist with operations around New Zealand. The remaining eleven squadrons will move to Manchuria where they will be prioritised for upgrade during their re-organisation from their trip. These aircraft will not be available for at least a week as a consequence of the long flight from the Pacific. Nothing more so over to Minister Satoru." concluded Jun.

"Thank you Minister Jun. Your Majesty, Gentlemen." Satoru began. "The attack was not a complete surprise and we have had our ground forces in the area for a long time. The main strike path appears to be north western China which was a small surprise as we expected Manchuria to be the main target. The situation on the Chinese border has changed dramatically during March."

apr1460000chnw.jpg

"Two hundred to two hundred fifty Soviet divisions are estimated to be along this border facing twenty Japanese divisions. Some of these enemy divisions are already moving forwards and it looks like Gulja is about to be receiving a large number of them. We shall withdraw of course. The Dive bombers sent to this region will have some time to reduce the enemy forces although it will be like a drop in the ocean for a number of months. We plan to slowly allow the Soviets to advance in this region bombing them every step of the way. Field Marshal Higashikuni is going to be a very busy man for some time."

"I hope someone let the Field Marshal know he has visitors?" the Emperor asked.

"We did yes your majesty."

apr1460000chcen.jpg

"The Mongolian border has seen no Soviet reinforcements at all. Our own troops moved forwards during March and can attack immediately as the enemy line is so weak. Those attack orders have already been sent. We will attempt to capture the Mongol capital in Ulan Bator if we can."

apr1460000chne.jpg

"The situation around Manchukuo has not changed. No increase in Soviet troops in Vladivostok but there are more than enough there already to prevent us advancing. We have no idea how many troops are north of this area but it is likely to be a fairly large number. We will be holding our ground in this area for as long as we can to protect our puppets."

apr1460000tojo.jpg

"We will allow the Soviets to take Toyohara as they seem to be rather keen to do so. They have far too many troops on this island but we do have plans to retake it in the future. We will let the Red Army occupy it and then wait for them to withdraw most of their forces."

apr1460000ind.jpg

"India is stable. No immediate threat of an Allied attack towards Karachi but the chances are that an increasing number of enemy troops will arrive here now that the Soviets have joined the War."

apr1460000pac.jpg

"Moving on to the Pacific. Things have gone remarkably well so far. We have conquered Australia and have almost secured the New Hebreides and Bismarck Archipelago. Forces are already on their way towards Fiji and should shortly depart for New Zealand. Once these areas have been secured then Operation Obsolete would have been concluded successfully in all respects. We will be leaving nine divisions in Australia to suppress partisans. There is one area of concern."

apr1460000marsh.jpg

"The Allies are trying to strengthen their position in the Marshalls. Most of our fleet is tied up to the south and we have little to prevent a larger Allied force arriving here. We will send additional forces to assist once they become available. The situation should be stabalised by the end of the month. Over to Minister Osami for a Naval report." concluded Satoru.
