Return to South East Asia
On October 19th a massive assault is unleashed on the Cambodian province of Ubon Ratchthani, which results in victory after two previous failed attempts by the Japanese.
Meanwhile in South Vietnam, six IJA divisions are preparing for a new assault on the island of Borneo. On October 26th the divisions are stationed off the northern coast of Borneo and prepared to attack. Three provinces are targeted though the main goal is the port of Miri. IJN fire support helps the two divisions attacking Miri gain control of the important port, while the other two landing sites are taken unopposed. After the provinces are secured, two divisions are detached from their units and reboard the transports for a trip south.
The next Japanese goal on Borneo is the important military base of Banjermasin, containing both a large airfield and port. Japanese control of this province would help to limit the extent of Allied bombers and fleets in the area, helping to make the region relatively safe for Japanese fleets. On November 3rd the Japanese begin landing operations in the area to lackluster British resistance, and soon control both the airfield and port. With the capture of this important base IGHQ declares operations in Borneo over and successful, with all important military installations on the island in Japanese hands. Japanese military planners are now focused on another operation on a different East Indies island.
On November 8th the final Allied resistance in Indochina at Phnom Penh is crushed, ending military operations in the area and freeing up many divisions for other operations.
On November 14th four IJA divisions assault the southeast part of Sumatra and Bangka island, with the main goal being the important military base of Palembang. The landings are successful and met with no Allied opposition, however the division in Dumai is soon forced south after it encounters significant Allied assault. Military operations on Sumatra are declared sufficiently complete with the capture of Palembang.
On November 28th 12 IJA divisions assault the significant Allied pocket at Moulmein. The battle is long and difficult but eventually the British are forced out of the province and retreat into Siam. The military threat in Burma from Allied forces is now eliminated and the theater is declared secure, freeing up more divisions for other Japanese operations.
On December 19th, 9 Japanese divisions, many from the now quiet Burmese and Indochinese fronts, are prepared for a massive invasion of the important island of Java. Unlike the other islands recently attacked by Japan in the region, the entire island of Java is ordered taken, in order to secure its important airfields, ports, and industries. The first three provinces landed at are soon taken unopposed.
On December 22nd, three divisions attack the important but undefended province of Batavia, and it and its installations are soon in Japanese hands.
On Christmas Eve the rest of the island is advanced upon and by December 27th the island is firmly in Japanese control. The operation is a complete success, with no division sized resistance faced on the entire island.
At the start of 1947 the Japanese Empire looks the strongest its looked since 1944, but there is still much work to be done.
