Hi folks,

I´m the grazy one who wanted to post his 70000 characters long AAR in one shot. ;) As some of you asked for mercy :D i will send my AAR in parts. I´m now several days away from home... so you can expect the following parts on Monday. Ok here we go...

The Royal Flash of Habsburg

Preface

Some years ago I played a board game named “Empires in arms” very similar to EU2. Already at that time it was to be played my desire this play once on PC. 2 months ago I discovered by coincidence EU2. Although turned based strategy games like the entire tank general (allied general) series, where I participate also in Ladder games, are my favourite games, EU2 is however the best and most complex strategy game which I ever became acquainted with. It is like a drug once starting a game you cant stop anymore. Accordingly much I slept the past weeks.
After a short test play I started a large campaign. Although my native language is not English I would like to try a good AAR to write in order to share realizations and experiences with other fans. It will become surely no certain style direction. Rather a mixture of several variants. I will concentrate on events happening in Europe or concerning European nations at least. Also a small additional Story beside the main Story will be included. I choose Austria to play because on the one hand it’s my homeland and on the other hand in the heart of Europe lie must be played very diplomatically.
I did not play it by any means perfectly, since it was my first campaign and I still had to learn. Here also many thanks to this great Community, which is always fast with tips and assistance confessed to me to the side. With the pictures stored at care2 it’s a strange thing, as sometimes it doesn’t work showing only “oops” or just fractures. But I think it’s only a matter of connection. Normally it should work well. Ok so let’s start… as if to say let the game run and have fun….

Albert V (1st January 1419 - 1st January 1439) (Initiate of the Realm)

Personal Notes

In view of the fact that Austria was neither military nor economically strong enough alone to exist I was on the search for a reliable, strong alliance partner. This should rule also in range of my first strategic goals. (Venetia, Genoa) I selected Bavaria which agreed only after some gifts to an alliance. In the course of the play Bavaria proved as reliable alliance partner, sending frequently their armies to our support. A couple of wars sparked all over Europe and the remainder of the world. Many smaller countries disappeared from the scene. Some of them developed however at a later time again. During the first phase Poland, Brittany, Sweden, Burgundy, Hungary were particularly successful. France was surprisingly weak and even lost some provinces to Brittany.

After some smaller field battles in those hardly more than 15k were involved the cities of these provinces were besieged. In the crucial phase of the war with Bosnia a peace treaty was signed. Friedrich V (27th November 1457 - 21st August 1493): (The Strategist)

Personal Notes

Austria run into the first inadvertent war as Bavaria declared war on Hungary. At first in the defensive things turned after the decisive battle in Ostmark. Still to it further nations declared war on Hungary. Hungary lost the war and some provinces, which was relatively unnecessary as Austria inherited Hungary in 1526 anyway. In this period with strong trading nations, such as France and Portugal also with Spain and Holland, trade agreements were met.
A CB against Genoa was used to attack their ally Modena. In the same manner we declared war on Venice to take action against the actual goals Bosnia and the papal state. It was a hard combat, which was finally won only with the help of Bavaria. In the midst of the critical phase also Poland with its allied Bohemia and Hanover declared war on our alliance. To calm this alliance it required the excellent diplomatic abilities of Friedrich V.
Further advancing Poland, Brittany and above all Burgundy continued to increase.

Military facts

A 40k strong Hungarian army besieged Ostmarch. Austria had only a 10k army in Austria. Other armies were scattered in the whole country. I decided therefore to wait for and hoped that Ostmarch the Hungarian attacks withstands. 3 months later Austria had a powerful army. (25k Inf+15k Cav.) This attacked Hungary against their expectations not from Austria over the Danube, but after a forced march from Ansbach. (Because of the penalty attacking over a river) Totally surprised Hungarian forces withdrew and were completely reamed by persuiting cavalry.
In the war against Modena Austria got a lesson in modern warfare and lost 2 field battles against a technically superior opponent in Apulia. Reserve units from Tyrol however could turn the situation to our favour. In the 3 war of this period one decisive field battle could be won against the papal state in the Lombardi. (35 ag 28 k). Only military courage drop was that a siege army with 40 cannons was completely destroyed and Tyrol fell into Venice hands as I had mobilized all forces for the field battle in the Lombardi. With the help of Bavaria Tyrol could be released however soon again from their hands.

Personal Notes

Maximilian I. harvested the fruits of its predecessor. Bosnia and the papal state became our Vassals. He was also founder of the 1st Austrian monopoly. In further consequence I tried to keep as many monopolies as possible. A war against Wuerttemberg, plotted by Bavaria, was ended diplomatically. To be able to annex Modena we invited them to our alliance. Our first discoverer was the beginning of a nice Tale.

Nice start Dragonheart. I always admire people who have the nerve to tackle an AAR in English, especially when it's not their native tongue. While log style AARs are not very popular, your method of breaking it down into pertinent sections like 'Austria-referred facts' and 'Military Facts', interspaced with 'Personal Notes' works quite well, and makes for an interesting read. Sadly, the 'Oopsed' picture problem won't go away. Perhaps your ISP has free web-space available that you can use. Good luck. ;)

I missed this one earlier...

I must agree with LD, here. *gasp* While I'm not a big fan of log-style AARs, the extra information you've added does help to give me a better idea of what's going on and adds a little extra flavour to the AAR. Certainly the way you've broken it up into sections makes it much easier to get through.

I guess that's kind of redundant to what LD said, but I thought you should at least come back and have a couple responses considering the work you've put into getting it up and running. I'll be poking my nose in periodically to see how you're making out.

Unsurprisingly, I have to echo MrT and LD when it comes to log-style AARs. However, you flesh out the bare facts, and that's a good thing. :)

So, the Pope's your vassal? That should make those HRE elections a little easier... ;)

Hi,
I just used the logfile to have an idea what was going on and provide eventual readers with some key facts, dates, sieges and some additional information. I wrote my AAR in one shot at the end of my game. Now i send it in parts that my readers are not bothered with to much input :) Ok so lets come to my second part ...starting with a small story....beside the main one.

Tale of the "Lost People of Gambia"

The receipt of our first discoverer on 1. August 1503 was the beginning of a tragic however Story successful in the final result. After the agreement with Spain which grants us access to their county in order to secure our supply the expedition started under the guidance of Salzburg in the year 1504 from Istria.
After a short intermediate stop on the Canary Islands where the supplies were refurbished, our fleet sailed along the African coast. After some months on sea one discovered the Gambia. One celebrated this historical success extensively on board. Unfortunately a tragic misfortune happened. The expedition leader went drunk from board and drowned. It came however still more badly. With a heavy tempest the entire fleet was destroyed. Only few survivors could save themselves with some goodies ashore. There they were directly friendly received… The aggressive natives fell over the survivors hungrily. They seemed to be cannibals. Only 587 men survived the massacre.

Austria involved into some wars in that time had hardly funds for a rescue expedition available. So the survivors stood on itself. Finally 39 years later a further Expedition started and one regained the group forgotten in the meantime. After some failed colonizing attempts we succeeded finally to create 1542 a Trading post. Some years later one colonized Gambia and the colony grew up despite adverse conditions (-3 % growth despite +3 stability and mayor) to substantial size. It became starting point of one of the most daring Adventure outside of Europe.

After some time Austria set up diplomatic relations with the neighbouring country Songhai. It was a rich country. Ivory, gold and spices were extensively present. Austria squinted jealousy to the east and a diplomatic offence gave Austria finally a reason to attack Songhai. Despite military superiority the war cost 200.000 Austrians the life. Adverse climatic conditions, constant revolts and ambushes dezimated the armies which were dependent from constant supply from the homeland. Even in Europe provinces already revolted to show their unwillingness to this war. But finally after 9 years the last province could be conquered and we vasallised Songhai. A rich province was annexed and conversed immediately (originally revolution risk 15 %). The “forgotten settlers” got that province in acknowledgment of their services to Austria.

Karl V (14th January 1519 - 2nd October 1556): (The Heir)
Personal Notes

Just at the beginning I used a Causus Belli against Siena for a declaration of war. It seems for me that the other countries like France, Geneva, Spain, Helvetia, Burgundy, Scotland and Baden only waited for that as they all immediately declared the war on us. Despite difficult times Karl V was the first Austrian leader which granted loans to other countries. Granted especially to allies and Vassals this loans were a great thing because they used it for development of their infrastructure and Austria finally benefited from that when dipl-annexing their allies. Austria had to fight 2 further wars in this period.
One against France and Portugal and a further one against Burgundy and its allies. These wars taught let never sink me longer than 5 years into war because constant revolts cause chaos. With the inheritance of Hungary and Bohemia (Vassal) and the sucessful wars considerable area gains could be registered. Also the faithful allies Bavaria could be won as Vassals. Only military courage drop was the loss of Bohemia as Vassals as they converted to Protestant faith.

Military facts

Up to the inheritance of Hungary in the year 1526 we were defeated several times against a military supremacy. The additional Hungarian armies came straight to right time. Some wars could be settled on diplomatic way. In this way the first war (1525-1528) was won. Helvetia and Siena went at Austria.
On 12. June 1549 France and Portugal declared war on Austria. This time without allies a tactical master achievement was in demand. Portugal, which attacked over South Italy, was beaten in many smaller battles there. The Lombardi the gate to Italy stood fast against rolling attacks of the Frenchmen. After the French bled out in numerous battles in Lombardi we started a counter attack in spring 1551 and conquered Florenz, Provence and Languedoc from Portugal as well as Guyenne and Lyonnais of France. Lyonnais was particularly a disputed area and changed for 3 time the owner. With the following peace negotiations Austria ended with Florenz, Provence, the Azores, Guyenne, and Lyonnais (1554)

3 days after peace treaty the next hammer came for Austria as Burgundy, Savoy and Poland declared war on Austria. Although supported by its allies this time Austria had nevertheless very soon to realize that Burgundy and Poland were a number to large for Austria. I reached therefore deeply into the bag and could pull out with a considerable gratuity Poland from war.
Burgundy entangled us into a multiplicity of smaller single battles of which the majority were won. Bourgogne, Holland and Fr. Comte fell into my hands. Burgundy wanted to again turn the luck and sent its entire east army back into their homeland. These had to march however trough Tyrol and were intercepted there. Helplessly without its armies accepted Burgundy our peace offer and conveyed us before loud gratitude Holland and Fr. Comte. (1556) This war was the beginning of the their struggling as many of its provinces revolted and some late even declared their independence (Holland)

Ferdinand I (2nd October 1556 - 27th July 1564): (Iron fist of Holland)

Personal Notes

The only Ferdinand I. had to fight with were constant revolts in Holland caused by revolts in the adjacent provinces of Burgundy. The revolution risk amounted already 25 % and culminated in an attack of a 95k strong revolution army which could struck back from a courageous regiment of 25k. I counted whole 25 revolutions in Holland in the 8 years. One can imagine that the joy with this province was short lived.

Maximilian II (27th July 1564 - 14th October 1576): (Executor of Burgundy)

Personal Notes

From revolutions shaken and apparent of suicide intention floated Burgundy looked for its welfare in a declaration of war on Austria.
It was not the last error of Burgundy, however the most decisive one.

Austria-referred facts

February 1, 1566: Our army technology rose to Renaissance (13).
Decembers 21, 1567: Burgundy declared the war to us
Decembers 23, 1567: Bosnia declared on the side of Austria, Bavaria and Modena the war on Burgundy.
Septembers 1, 1568: Our naval technology rose to the late Middle Ages (7).
May 6, 1571: Holland independence happened to us. (I lost Holland)
March 1, 1572: Our naval technology rose to the late Middle Ages (8).
July 10, 1572: Burgundy accepted our peace offer (Flanders)
May 16, 1573: We increased our colony in The Azores.
Septembers 12, 1573: We increased our colony in The Azores.
May 1, 1574: Our naval technology rose to the late Middle Ages (9).

Military facts

The war against Burgundy was rather a fight against rebels than against a regular army. As Holland anyway was not to hold my army left for Flanders. Flanders was an easy play to conquer, as only rebels were my opponents. My main problem was however that the fights took place in the north and I had no additional troops and also no military access there. Thus with reaching of the minimum goal (Flanders) I offered peace to Burgundy. Burgundy lost Flanders; Holland declared its independence and Burgundy sank still more in the swamp in that it already was. Now Austria had its first COT.

July 25, 1571: Holland regiment reached Flanders.
July 25, 1571: We besieged Flanders.
March 25, 1572: We conquered Flanders from rebels.
May 7, 1572: We besieged Brabant.

Mathias (22nd January 1612 - 22nd March 1619) (The Sleeper)

Personal Notes

Either I overslept this time or passed it really nothing. An uneventful time. :D

Ferdinand II (22nd March 1619 - 15th February 1637): (The Holy one)

Personal Notes

August 10, 1643: Bohemia is now our Vassal.
Septembers 1, 1644: Our army technology rose to baroque (22).
June 13, 1645: Cleve is now our Vassal.

Military facts

In the first phase of the war Bohemia was almost run over by the well-prepared troops of Austria. Hessen was fast wiped out with the assistance of Cleves. Recovered from the first shock Bohemia collected a considerable army in the mountains of Erz, which represented a large danger for my siege army in Bohemia. A fast set up cavalry unit could intervene however still in time in the combat and could prevent a possible defeat. As Bohemians troops always retreated to Erz and massed their troops there I decided to end that and invaded Erz. The armies now arriving Erz were all destroyed. Now the way to west Bohemia was free.

Octobers 13, 1640: We besieged Bohemia.
Octobers 23, 1640: We won a field battle against Hessen in Cleves.
Octobers 26, 1640: We besieged Württemberg.

Good work Dragonheart. Even if the log style is a bit annoying, it still really is a pleasure reading your AAR. I really enjoyed the Tale of "The lost people of Gambia."

BTW, what the hell was

March 21, 1439: Helvetia annexed Norway.

That's the weirdest thing ever!!!!!!!!!!

Leopold I (1st July 1658 - 7th May 1705): (The diplomatic Warlord )

Personal Notes

I used Leopolds excellent diplomatic abilities to improve the relations with other countries. In that way we could also successfully exchange discoveries. At the end of its regency me nearly all areas on the map of the world were well known. Since in further consequence several wars were expected, I used every single possibility (also events) to trim the centralization down to reduce the risk of the war tiredness. Despite a long-term alliance Holland refused becoming Vassal. Even in further future I had no success to make Holland to our Vassals.
Beside Poland also Russia and Sweden became more and more active and stronger now. Also colonial powers like Spain, Brittany and Portugal expand now their colonies more aggressively. A funny detail beside is that the government of China 6 times within short time was fallen.

General facts

January 17, 1686: Russia annexed Ukraine.
Septembers 14, 1688: Brittany annexed Scotland.
Septembers 14, 1695: Burgundy became Vassal of Poland. January 6, 1703: Portugal became Vassal of Brittany. (Methuen contract).

April 1, 1703: Our army technology rose to baroque (30).

Military facts

In a short war against Venice we got Croatia (shield province). The next clash was more intensive. A war with Songhai lasts 9 Years. Details are already contained in the Story.
By claiming the Spanish throne (event 2 November 1700) Austria received a CB against Spain and France. As Austria however a very strong alliance (France, Spain, Portugal, Poland and Sardinia) was faced with also Sweden was invited into our alliance with Bavaria, Holland and Bohemia. I expected myself thereby something discharge at the east front as all strength in the west were needed.
If I thought the war with Songhai was crucial I had soon to realize that it could be worse. A lot of larger battles occurred. Highlight was however a battle in Guyenne where a 58 k army achieved a Pyrrhic Victory against a 75k strong French army. The losses were substantially more highly than those of the opponent and it remained only 18 k over. A further highlight was the battle of 98 k army under Villeroy against 106 k under Starenberg. Backed with a 75 k cavalry unit coming from Lyonnais Starenberg could win that crucial field battle. It was the most involving heavy losses battle, which I saw. Villeroy died one hero death and only 3000 Frenchmen left living the battleground. A strong Polish army (58k) was likewise completely wiped out.

Personal Notes

Under Joseph I. the wars under Leopold I. begun were ended. Poland became our Vassal, Spain lost Liguria and France had Limossin, Berri and Orleans to transfer. I like the interesting twist you've put on the 'log-style'
You've sure had some interesting results, Helvetia annexing Norway, Portugal bulding a Southern France, Northern Italy empire and Brittany becoming a colonial power
And good work diplo-annexing the Pope!

Maria Theresa (22nd October 1740 - 30th November 1780): (The Quiet one)

Joseph II (30th November 1780 - 20th February 1790): (The Precursor)

Personal Notes

In these 10 years Austria was prepared for the BB Wars. All men and women fit for military service (oops to early time for women… lol) were called up, cannons were built , fortresses close to the border were developed and still much more. The recovered BB-Value was used to annex Baden and Luxembourg.

August 1, 1785: Our army technology rose to revolutionary (54).
Septembers 1, 1786: Our naval technology rose to manoeuvre war (31).
May 1, 1788: Our army technology rose to revolutionary (55).
Decembers 16, 1788: The Holy Roman Empire selected Josef II from Austria to their emperor.
Decembers 2, 1789: Chimú is annexed by Spain.

Leopold II (20th February 1790 - 3rd March 1792) (The short-time worker)

February 20, 1790: The Holy Roman empire selected Leopold II from Austria to their emperor.
Septembers 11, 1791: Kazakh is annexed by Russia.

Franz II (3rd March 1792 onwards): (The bad Boy)

Personal Notes

As Austria only one more point from BB Wars a cry went throughout the world as Franz II annexed Poland and Bohemia diplomatically. Things followed now were stress purely. ...Those experienced in BB-Wars will know what I mean. My principal purpose in this BB Wars was to have at least every 5 years some days peace to avoid to high war tiredness. My problems with the different religions and cultures were already enough pain.
Unfortunately I could not make a large nation to my Vassal anymore as they were narrowly linked to each other. Portugal Vassal of Brittany, Spain Vassal of France, and France Vassal of Portugal. Only the Osman. Empire could be vassalized in the all-last battle. Also the area gains despite partial 99% victories held themselves within limits as the peace negotiations were very tough. I did not even get only 60 % of a 99% victory. But who does not do everything for few days a peace. The many Trading posts I got in the cause of peace negotiations were all burnt down by my enemies as I had no possibility to defend them. The error to have a fleet on sea during wartimes I made only once.
The whole bloodbath happened in 4 waves whereby I was near of bankruptcy during the 3 wave of BB-Wars although I started BB-Wars with about 17000 ducats and raised nearly all the time war taxes. When I started to diminish and strategically better use expensive artillery I could solve that problem and finally ended with around 11000 ducats.

General facts

The other countries had no more time for other things than declaring war on me.

Military facts

Here I did without cryptic stating of all sieges and conquests because there would approx. 350 entries and the AAR is anyway already very long. Shortly said …
I had to strike down 300 revolutions and conquered except for few exceptions always all provinces from my opponents. At least I occupied all reachable provinces to prevent army production. Against the Ottomans I stayed inactive until the 3 war-series. (only defending) Unfortunately I did not have all details concerning the peace negotiations but I think the final pictures will show my progress.
Some highlights would be…….

The conquest of North Umberland from Burgundy on the English island. From this basis I attacked then English provinces. The landing of my troops took place when I was at war only with Burgundy otherwise it would have been impossible.
I have amusing way lost more battles against Osman. Empire. than against other nations. It did not even happen to me only once when I removed the brick from the enter button (because of the many Pop Ups) my armies in Kosovo, Ragusa, Wallachia were vanished (not once with the Kebab stand) J Spain and Sweden were the two strongest opponents. In the largest battle of the play Duke Karl with its 75k strong army had to resist 130k of the Spain in Navarra (in the meantime in our possession)

Against Sweden it took place a competition in siege art. I besieged Kurland with 128k and Sweden besieged one of my provinces just beside Kurland with 98k. As Sweden noticed that they are slower they stormed my fortress with their 98k army. 27 men and 1 cannon were left before the assault was stopped! J As in the subsequent month Kurland fell, I moved my 128 army into the adjecent province and pulled the 98k Swedish army out of my province.
The sieges were at all a story for itself. Spain and Sweden had nearly all fortresses on maximum There already 300 cannons had to be involved to crack these bulwarks. With the other nations I had it more easily.

Some Statistics

I had changed the religious Slider Settings in 2 steps. At the beginning I set the Muslim Lever to 0, and after I received first Protestant provinces I set the orthodox Lever at 0 too, in favour of protestant and reformed religion. Toward end of the game where many orthodox provinces were conquered I had rather much annoyance with the new provinces. But after all as these provinces were origin of unrest anyway and I had to be militarily present was me that all the same.

Final Slider Settings

Aristocracy = 10
Centralization = 2
Narrow-minded = 0
Mercantilism = 3
Offensive = 10
Landforce = 10
Quality = 10
Serfdom = 7

Finally Austria lost 6.52 million inf. and 1.4 millions cav.

I ended gameplay with 10916 VP, second was Spain with 2469 and third Brittany with 2464

Epilogue

After heavy use of my dictionary I am finally done. Please excuse my partially grammatically horror and my typing errors. You will hardly believe that I shorted the AAR numerous times but it still became very long. I did it without Parser.
More or less I reached my play goals on the whole. Europe became a rather white mark, and additionally I own some more provinces distributed over the remainder of the world. Osman. Empire and Songhai left as my Vassals. The decision to risk BB-Wars as late as possible was in any case correctly. 26 years BB being is enough. The background of the small Tale was that I really forgot that province.
Anyhow this play was a great fun. If I made some strategically faults please let me know because in my next campaign everything has to run perfectly. I will play probably with Songhai. (With my lost settlers)
Meanwhile I also discovered that one does not need all opposing provinces around to make a defeated opponent Vassal. (Late however nevertheless)
Ok that’s it I hope you enjoyed this AAR anyway.

Very long? Oh my.:D I guess for this style AAR it's fairly long. But not really. Very good gameplay here, of course. Well done keeping your head during the BB Wars. And adding your notes makes this feel more personal than a long-style AAR usually does. As time goes on you'll get a better command of the English, and most of us are far more forgiving of those for whom it is a second language as well.

All in all, a worthy effort. Congratulations. :D

Good stuff! Must agree...for log style I guess it's longish, but the way you presented it worked very nicely. Congratulations. :)

Thanks for flowers :)
If there is a next time i will present another style as this one is taking a great pain. Maybe it´s better to write it directly in english but to translate in afterwards.
Additional i think that AAR´s of countries with a great challenge are more interesting for readers.
Maybe i will write "a short one" :D about my current game with Songhai, as there is no AAR so far.
But at the moment i´m to exhausted from that one

Cheers Dragonheart

Reading this AAR, I was under the impression of watching a movie pressing the "Fast-Forward" button on the videotape all the time :D

Well, I cannot say I am fan of log-style AAR, but at least I want you to know I read yours entirely. ;)

Good luck,

Cat

PS [edited]: And by the way, English being not my native language neither, I can tell you that neverthless, I write directly in English, because writing in French first and translating after is an horrible process.

Maybe it was not the best idea to write an AAR on my first campagne. It´s like driving a formula one car without licence fee. :D
Meanwhile i m switching to the multiplayer section so my english is improving too.:p
Thanks for positive comment.
