First step, create one parent "Robot" species. All Robots belong to this species. (Machine intelligences do not, nor to Synthetic-ascended organics; just built robots).
Second, give each empire a "{Empire Adjective} Robot" subspecies. Like "Terran Robot" for humans.
That would improve robot management significantly. We can keep robot subspecies around that are useful, or mod them to suit our needs. But we don't end up with a bajillion tiny identically named robot species with random AI-decided traits.
