I decided to start this based on EU2experience with Macassar, where I managed to grow this OPM into the ruler of all the Indonesian zone and had equal wars with Portugal for their centres of trade that appeared in SE Asia.

Now I want to reproduce it in EU3, but so far I've started and the task seems impossible. Or just unrealistic. The income is reeeeally low, meaning that with 10 gold per year we get 1 colonist in 5 years and 1 colony in 50 years... Need to conquer the neigbours, therefore. Bali was conquered rightaway, surely. Muslim countries haven't been touched yet. Also Ternate is the 1st colony of Macassar with 100 settlers ))

Also, I have to mention that I will have to use re-loading save games, but only in one situation - unsuccessful colonisation. I cannot allow my hard-earned money just to be wasted. This cheat may be removed as the country becomes richer, however.

Haven't made any screenshots yet, so just a small narrative - when the country is small, the historyruns faster.

It is now year 1508.

Makassar has struggled hard throughout the XV century to increase its influence in the region.

The first step to greatness was the conquer of Hindu infidels in Bali. The Makassari army made a few attempts to land that were pevented by the army of Bali but at last they succeeded and the Bali territories were annexed.

The Sultanate then started funding the exploration and thorough study of the surrounding islands and the island of Sulawesi itself, as although the seas were well-known to Makassar sailors and merchants, the inner territories of islands stayed unexplored.
Expeditions undertaken by one of the Sultan's servant whose name was later ungratefully forgotten explored the island of Sulawesi and the spice islands around. Then a decision was taken to found a colony on the island of Ternate whose natives were friendly and accepted happily the Makassari rule. The spread of Sultan's lands on sulawesi itself was by now unrealistic due to the hostility and numerosity of independent tribes that ihabited the jungles and mountains of the island.

The expansion of colonies and trade posts was an expensive project for the small sultanate like Makassar. Therefore new territories and money were needed to fund the exporation and colonisation. The sultan turned his attention to the infidels of the region. While the islands of Borneo and Sumatra were owned by our friends, there were buddhist and hindu kingdoms in the Indochina. The kingdom of Champa was chosen for conquest as the owner of rich provinces cultivating spices. After a successful war two of its provinces were added to the Makassari realms.

After that the sultans decided it unwise to continue territorial expansion in Indochina. Other provinces were either poor and useless or owned by another muslim country, Malacca, that was besides too strong for us to combat at that period. However, the fighting against the infidels continued. Instead of territorial expansion the crushed infidels were made to pay indemnities that were used to expand the Makassari colonisation. The 50 ducats received in a peace agreement equalled 5 yearly incomes first, although later the incomes increased, thus making the money received from such wars less (but still very) important.

Further progress was quite slow. Money was accumulated and sent for colonisation. Ternate was now in full ownership of Makassar, and the Sultanate decided it was time for conquering the lands of their native island Sulawesi at last. Over time the southeastern part of island was also slowly added to the Sultanate. The central and the most hostile part of island was made the next objective, and its development started in late XV and early XVI century.

During that period Malacca managed to conquer nearly all of southern Indochina, removing most infidels near our borders. That was good, but also removed one of our best sources of income.

Malacca even tried to conquer our country once, but our soldiers, although outnumbered, fought bravely and managed to get a white peace from Malaccans.
The minor island of Sulu has also accepted the vassalisation by the great Makassari Sultanate.

In early XVI century the yearly income of Makassar has reached 25 ducats, and that meant that the Sultanate was now able to send a colonial expansion expedition every two years even without any wars against infidels.

Probably not I am afraid, it's a risk of updating. Once in EU2 I kept 1.05 on my computer as I was doing an AAR on that version, whilst for fun playing 1.07.

The first war against the infidels ended, and the makassari Sultanate not only conquered the Bali kingdom, but also retook the isle of Makassari ex-allies Sulu from Champa, the allies of Bali. This way the first expansion o ccurred.

As the Sultanate grew stronger and stronger, the Sultan decided that they had enough power to conquer the hostile tribes of Sulawesi jungles and swamps, so colonists from the great city of Makassar started moving to these lands, first in coastal areas and gradually deeper into the land, while the Sultanate army controlled the native tribes and protected the settlers.

Having allied with most muslim countries around, the Sultanate turned its direction onto exanding in the Indian isles. A decent fleet was made, and an army was sent to conquer the Kingdom of Ceylon that consisted of the corresponding island and also the Maldives archipelago. After two successful wars the Kingdom was annexed, and thus the Sultanate converted into a real regional power with colonies and territories all ovel the Indian coast and Indonesian archipelago.

The poor king Ang Em I of Khmer went insane after repeated wars and a lot of countries attacking him. What made the unlucky ruler lose his mind completely was the fact of having two wars with the same Sultanate of Makassar in two different alliances. After that the insane king ordered to sign a truce for one war and continue fighting Makassar in another war, you can see that at the left bottom of picture, although the text is quite small.
The Makassari rulers didn't get insane, however, and did not have any truce with Khmer among their diplomatic agreements. Later the kingdom of the insane was conquered, made to pay tribute of 50 ducats and vassalised.

The Makassari policy of colonisation required sufficient funding, and for that numerous expeditions against infidels in Indochina were made, forcing them to pay tribute and war indemnities and gradually making vassals nearly all the small countries there. The funds got from tribute made a great impact on successful colonising.

For a long time the territory of the Indonesian archipelago remained purely muslim, after the Sultanate of Makassar conquered the minor Bali state. Malacca and Atjeh were close friends and at some periods even allies of Makassar, while Brunei, even further, accepted the honour to be a vassal of the Sultanate, and more and more were the calls in Brunei to be integrated into the Makassari state completely.

Then, however, during one its wars against the infidels of India Atjeh suffered a severe defeat. The whole island of Sumatra was occupied by Rajputana, and these putanas annexed all but the very capital of Atjeh in the peace deal. This war, started by Atjeh without allying to its friends, turned out a catastrophe for the whole region, and the Sultan of Makassar called to a war to regain these provinces. A few months after the peace treaty was signed, the joint alliance of Makassar, Malacca and Brunei declared war on Rajputana and its Indian allies. Rajputana has been fighting in constant wars at that time, and the revolts were starting all over the coutry, or at least the Sultan expected them to. The territory unlawfully seized by the hindu infidels was soon taken by the Makassari forces without any resistance, but the Rajputana state turned out to be much stronger than originally expected, and expeditions to India became absolutely necessary.

The Makassari fleet fought incountable battles against the Indian fleets around the Sumatra and the Makassari possesions in Ceylon and Maldives. The army of Makassar also made some attempts to get to the Indian mainland and defeat the enemy armies, but although the Makassari soldiers fought bravely and won many victories, they were vastly outnumbered and in the end annihilated. New army was organized, and new victories were won, but they didn't have much impact on Rajputana that had vast possessions in India and strong armies, and did not agree to lose all of their territories in Sumatra. In the end, Makassar decided to sign a peace treaty, receiving two southern Sumatra provinces, the richest on the island. But the thoughts about regaining the remaining territories continued.

Also, after the end of this bloody war, the rulers of Brunei decided finally to incorporate into the Sultanate, and their decision was welcomed allover the muslim states of Southeastern Asia. So the Makassari Sultanate became much more powerful.

The map of all the Makassar possessions after the first war with Rajputana:

It was a few years after the first war with Rajputana, the truce with them has already ended, and the people of oter Sumatran provinces announced their willing to be with the Sultanate, not under the rule of the hindu opressors from India. Therefore, Makassar decided to start a new war against the infidels, continuing to liberate the malayan people from the rule of foreigners. While Rajputana still recovered from the exhaustive war, the Sultanate declared a new one, and it mainly followed the same scenario as the previous one. The Sumatran enemy terriotories were quickly occupied, and the expeditions were sent to India to defeat the armies of the rajas, occupy some of their lands and force them to make peace, meanwhile the Indians attacked Ceylon and suffered numerous defeats there. After hard battles and seiges the possessions of Rajputana in Bengal were occupied and secured, and the rajas, seeing thier country overstreched and defeated, at last succumbed to the demands of Makassar, releasing the eastern, most developed and rich of spices, coast of Sumatra.

That victory and also the weakening of Malacca due to defeats in its Indochina wars led to yet greater influence of Makassar among the islamic states of the region. After great rebellions in Malacca that spread all over the country, and some provinces defecting, including Johor that joined the Makassari Sultanate, Malacca, despite having vast territories, became weak politically and happily accepted the proposal of vassalisation by the Makassari Sultanate, offering its incomes from trade and taxes to Makassar, so that it could build troops and wage more successful wars against the infidels.

Below is the map of new possessions of the Sultanate after the 2nd war with Rajputana and the civil wars in Malacca.

Below is the overview of Makassari allies and vassals, Malacca not yet mentioned here as they accepted vassalisation a bit later. As seen in the alliances, Gujarat, the only muslim country left in India, allied with Makassar for mutual benefits, ensuring protection of Gujarat from Bihar and Rajputana as well as providing a convenient base in India for Makassar to launch attacks on the infidels.
