So, I've been wanting to do this for a while. The idea of dismantling the Catholic Church has always appealed to me in CK2, though I didn't know how to do it prior to now. This AAR will be played with CK2+ mod enabled, as well as with a custom character replacing the Duke of Apulia. The custom character is here:
kdlqb.jpg
It will take a mainly gameplay AAR, with as much story as I can manage. Kudo's to you if you recognize the banner or the origin of this character.
The AAR will mainly be in 3 stages: Expansion, Fall of the Catholic Church, and "the Sicilian Riconquista".
First Update will be sometime tomorrow.

Expansion Part 1: The Early Years
How did it come to this, mused Rand. Once Emperor of the largest empire in the world, albeit a different one, and now Duke of a duchy in the middle of nowhere. Still, considering how he got here and into the position of Duke, it's surprising he hadn't been killed already. No matter though. There was work to be done. Heirs to be procured. And so he had sent an offer of marriage to Arsenda d'Empuries, the best eligible diplomat and administrator he could find in the Catholic world. He'd have a response in a few days.

BOue0.jpg

When she accepted, and she would accept, the throne would be almost secure. Now, his thoughts drifted to war. He was a very capable fighter and general, one of the best there was. And yet, as Duke of 2 minor duchies, he could not wield the manpower he was accustomed to. He would need to grow stronger. His vassals told him of the riches of the island of Sicily in the south. He already had a small foothold. Perhaps it was time to expand...

A few days later, a declaration of war to the Sheikhdom of Palermo had been issued. The Sheikh mustered an army of almost 1000 men, but that army was routed in two decisive victories, after which Palermo was besieged. In the interim, a young lady had caught his eye, but he wasn't lustful. He was not interested in bastards. And so he denied himself the pleasure.

PubwJ.jpg

A half year later, with three cities taken, the Sheikh surrendered all his titles to the Duke of Apulia. Riding into Palermo as the ruler for the first time, Rand decided that this county would be his capital.
However, he was met with a surprise. His wife, who he hadn't seen in a few months, had gone through childbirth and had produced him two children, a son to be heir (Tancred) and a daughter to assist (Alison). Overjoyed, Rand took a few weeks off to be with his wife (and to replenish piety reserves.) After that, he realized that as long as Muslims ruled on Sicily, his rule would never be stable. And so he crushed Girgenti, handing it off to one of his minor vassals. Once again, his wife went through the pangs of childbirth, producing another son. Once again, he took time off, before turning his eyes to Trapani. It suffered the same fate as the rest and was divided amongst his angry vassals. His relations with the church, after three unauthorized holy wars, was shaky, so he took a few years off (to replenish his piety.) In the meantime, in 1074, his wife got pregnant a fourth time, this time producing another daughter. Rand saw the beginnings of a dynasty spreading across Europe.

gQB0i.jpg
sgt9k.jpg

Shortly after the birth of Wilmot, he betrothed Tancred to Princess Neda of Croatia. Though a few years older, she already showed signs of being a capable diplomat and warrior, good qualities for the heir's wife to have. It also had the benefit of securing an alliance with Croatia. About 4 years after the consolidation of mainland Sicily, Rand turned his eye to Malta. This time he went to the church to receive authorization, but was denied.

3loDn.jpg

Shrugging, he declared war anyway and conquered Malta a few months later. The result was never in doubt, what with the Sheikh unable to raise any men. After that, Rand had no weak Muslims nearby, and his relations with the church were on quicksand, so there was peace for 5 years. Sometime in the intervening years, around 1081, his full title became Duke Rand "the Dragon" of Apulia.

ZWKn1.jpg

Spot the missing word in that title.

At the end of the 5 years, on the dawn of the year of our lord 1083, Duke Rand of Apulia officially became King Rand of Sicily. With his new found power and prestige, he secured the betrothals of his two daughters. The eldest, Alison, was betrothed matrilineally to a 15 year old master diplomat, while the younger, Wilmot, was betrothed to the heir of the HRE, creating an alliance the big guys next door.
He also managed to secure the fealty of the child-Duke of Capua, strengthening his claims on the Kingdom of Sicily. At the dawn of a new year, he finally turned his eyes to the Dukes and Counts who were previously untouchable. Part 1 End.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
So, this was pretty routine for me as I had already done a previous Sicily playthrough. However, the Holy Wars requiring piety definitely stopped me from expanding ridiculously. I'm going to need to ration them in the future...
There was 1 minor hiccup in the kingship process, in that it would take ridiculously long to become king (at least another decade, if not 2 because of income problems) I used the cash cheat and got myself a small bit of gold (130) to become king. It'll help the pace in future parts.
All in all it was pretty fun. The Dragon title was really hilarious, considering Rand's title in the book series.

Expansion Part 2: Death
Rand sat, lounging on his throne, bored. He'd been listening to the Duke of Salermo pleading to not be crushed into dust and how he'd serve faithfully for the past two hours. It was really quite amusing. However, it grated on his nerves, and none of his arguments were able to dissuade Rand. Without any patience left, Rand shut the Duke up with a wave of his hand. "As far as I'm concerned, these last few hours have been wasted. My position is no different now than it was two hours ago. Leave my court now. This is no longer the time for words." Without even waiting for the Duke to withdraw, Rand turned to his Marshall and asked how long it would take to rally his levies. "2 weeks, milord." "Excellent. Have them muster here, in Palermo. We'll march against the Duke in due time." After about 4 months with no battles, Rand captured the only holdings of the Duke and forced his surrender.
AW9Ev.jpg

After his victory against the Duke, Rand received a message from the King of Croatia. A succession had occurred and now his son's marriage to Neda wasn't providing an alliance. No longer seeing the point, he broke off the betrothal and found another wife in Agalina di Occhiobello.
tkzO3.jpg

In addition, the vassals of the realm, cowed by the performance of the kings power, approved his change to raise crown authority and so Medium Crown Authority was established. However, there were 2 vassals that were not cool with the change. They were both dealt with in one action with a Prince Bishop being handed a dukedom and jurisdiction of the other angry vassal. Now, over the rest of the session, Alison's betrothal was broken a total of 4 times as the betrothed refused a matrilineal marriage. With the vassals fresh off a war, Rand decided to consolidate his power base on Sicily and take the remaining province not under his control, Napoli. A few months later, the count surrendered. He soon received a message from his wife back in Palermo. His second son, Walter, was coming of age soon and a wife needed to be found. Rand found one in Katalin Poth, a master of intrigue (I believe?). On the way back to Palermo from Napoli, while stopping in the court of the Duke of Calabria, he sighted a pretty little thing. He never found out her name except that she was a de Hauteville. After a night of drinking and celebrating, he found himself in bed with her.
N2nAQ.jpg

Leaving the next day, having impregnated Matilda de Hautville, he continued onto Palermo. Arriving home, he spent barely a week before attempting to get a sanction for holy war from the Pope. Once more, he was denied, but, as last time, it mattered not and so he declared holy war on the Emirate of Tunis.
iuoOg.jpg

A few weeks later, 2000 men boarded ships at Palermo and set sail for Tunis. The mustering Emir's army was crushed and his territory besieged. A few days later, Rand received a report of a small Muslim force moving towards his army. Specifically, an army 3 times smaller than his. Smelling an easy victory, he lead a charge the next morning. Unfortunately, during the charge, he ran into a small force of pikemen and both Rand and some of his honor guard were gutted on the pikes. The king was dead.
ZhZr7.jpg

____
King Tancred the First was crowned a few days after his death. Near the end of the ceremony, his spymaster walked up to him. "Lord, I bring dire news. There is an unruly count attempting to lower your authority in the Kingdom of Sicily. He has gathered a substantial following to him. What is your wish?" Damn, thought Tancred. Not even a week after his fathers death and vassals already attempting to weaken the realm. In the middle of holy war, no less. "Arrest him. And if you fail to, then tell me. I'll pull my men out of Tunis." The words left a sour taste in Tancred's mouth. That was the place were his father had died. And he might have to abandon it. He felt sick to his stomach.
The next day, he received word. The count had failed to be arrested, and raised his flag in rebellion. Damning the Count, he ordered his troops to pull out of Tunis and begin sieging the Count's territories. The war was close, and Tancred was forced to hire 500 mercenaries in order to turn the tide of war, but in the end he won. The civil war was ended and Tancred could turn his attention to Tunis once more.
1ywc8.jpg

All the gains his father had made were undone. The only reason he wasn't losing the war was because his father had laid low the hosts of Tunis. Unfortunately, the Emir had called his fellow Muslims into the war and so Tancred could not order another offensive. Instead, he decided to build up his cash reserves in order to hire mercenaries and finally found a wife for his twin sister, Alison, after 4 broken betrothals. The husband was a son of the Kaiser, who agreed to a matrilineal marriage. After half a year of building up his cash reserves, he deemed himself ready to win in Tunis. Mustering 3000 men and 1500 mercenaries in reserve, he headed off to Tunis. 3 days after his arrival in Tunis, a large Muslim army of 4000 Muslims arrived to drive him from the shores of Tunis. Having his mercenaries wait and conduct a naval assault from behind broke the Muslims back. The Emir of Tunis surrendered the day after. And so, Tancred won his first offensive war and fulfilled his ambition to win a war (how winning a civil war doesn't count I don't know). And so, he prepared for peace. However, that was not to be. The pope had called a Crusade for Jerusalem and Tancred saw an opportunity to bind his realm together. Gathering an army of 1000 men, his dukes and powerful counts, and himself, he sailed to the holy land to get the Crusader perk. On arrival, he wondered at the lack of Caliphate forces. He had expected the Crusaders to be having a hard time, losing many men and not able to hold a foothold. Instead, he found Jerusalem already besieged and not a single Caliphate army in sight. For once thinking that the Crusade could actually be won, he went back to Sicily and mustered an additional 2000 men and sailed back to the Holy Land. Being careful to only besiege coastal cities and always have an escape route handy in case a doom stack came along, he slowly fought his way to top of the participation list. In the midst of it, he received a message from his spymaster that his brother's wife was plotting against him, planning to have him killed. Telling his spymaster to tell the woman that she will either have to give up her plot or be arrested was enough and the plot was ended.
WpUky.jpg

After capturing 3 cities, he rode in with his 2500 men to save a christian army that was being destroyed by a 5000 strong Caliphate army. 3 days of heavy fighting proceeded and at the end, the Caliphate army was scattered. The next day, Tancred received a royal envoy. It was from his wife, who said he now had a second son, a child named Gerard. Tancred was overjoyed, but could not come home.
GOCiC.jpg

2 months later, the Caliphate surrendered. Becoming lord of Jerusalem, he decided to keep the title of Kingdom of Jerusalem to himself to form at a time he wanted, but formed the Duchy of Ascalon and handed that to his brother. He then proceeded to split the rest of his new holdings among his existing vassals, stabilizing his reign. The first years of the new king had been turbulent, but the realm had come out larger and stronger at the end.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
This part was a bit annoying to play through, what with the annoying vassal trying to lower crown authority and the king dying midway through, not to mention the nasty surprise of 4000 Muslims waiting for me at Tunis. However, I'm in the position now that a few tax law changes will result in me raking in at least 10 gold per month and that's with bare-bones architecture.
I was also really surprised by the lack of Muslim doom stacks. The massive civil war a few years back must've been worse than it seemed.

Expansion Part 3: The Civil Wars
Tancred sat on his horse, staring across Jerusalem. His land. Never would he have believed the Holy Land would be reclaimed, much less rule it. Pity he couldn't stay here. He had an alliance to honor back in Sicily, with the Holy Roman Empire. Taking one last look at Jerusalem, he turned around and headed home. When he arrived, he was surprised that his wife, in his absence, had given birth to another son, who was named Tancred after his father. Tancred (the older) was overjoyed and took a few months off to let his troops rest.
YmbJ9.jpg

Two months later, at the head of a 3000 strong army, Tancred moved into Toscana. He expected light resistance as the bulk of their armies would be afar, besieging and fighting the Kaiser's forces. His guess was correct and over the entire duration of the sieges of Toscana no armies came to intercept him. In the end, after 8 months of siegework, he finally forced the Duchess of Toscana to surrender, which allowed the Kaiser to focus his armies and crush the other rebellions.
Coming come after a second successful campaign, Tancred raised feudal taxation to high, in order to receive for cash from his vassals. This pissed off one of his vassals, who Tancred encouraged to rebel by revoking his honorary title and granting him the title of Court Jester.
BKcax.jpg

About half a month after the announcement, his wife gave birth again to their 4th child and first daughter, Alisce.
LG36f.jpg

Once again Tancred took a break, waiting two years amassing gold in the treasury before declaring himself Duke of Tunis and declaring war on the last Muslim county in Tunis, which was ruled by the Sultan of Africa. Sicily marched to war once more. Unfortunately, in the two year interlude, Tancred's second son, Gerard, had died of pneumonia. Tancred spent a week in prayer.
tAbEy.jpg

However, Tancred found solace in a courtiers embrace, and he spent one night with her and took her for his lover. Unfortunately, she gave birth to a son just prior to his campaign in Tunis. He denounced the child and sought reconciliation with his wife.
gykIm.jpg

Shortly after landing in Tunis, the Sultan was captured, Tancred's demands enforced, and his head cut off. Barely had the ink dried than Tancred had sent to the Pope, requesting for Holy Sanction. Impressed by Tancred's piety, the Pope accepted.
wuo3k.jpg

This time, Tancred mustered his forces against the Tripolitanians. Mustering his 3000 men once more, he crushed their armies and took their castles from them, stealing a small fortune and amassing a nice pile of piety. The Tripolitanians surrendered soon after.
Unfortunately, the realm fell into several periods of civil wars over the next few years, of which one was against a child count.
OmTHz.jpg

In the end, Tancred came out on top, subduing his rebellious vassals and coming out richer and more powerful. In order to fulfill his ambition of becoming a Paragon of Virtue, he crowned one of his bishops Duke of Apulia. That was enough and Tancred's full title became "King Tancred the Just and Holy"

World Update:
bdmVe.jpg

England is in a civil war, the Russians are being driven back by the Cuman khaganate, the Seljuk Turks have taken half of the Byzantine Empire and a Jihad for Thessalonica has succeeded. Before the century is over the Byzantine Empire is a shadow of its former might. I foresee a Muslim invasion of Europe in the works. In other news, the Shia Caliphate is in revolt. Again.
This part was the most frustrating to play so far because of the AI's insistence of killing off important characters at inopportune times and rebelling/plotting against me constantly. I only got a measly 4-5 counties throughout the entire part. As a result of barely any expansive action, this part was shorter than the others.
Also, is there a technical reason no-one is replying or just general lack of interest?

Personally, I'm just waiting for the heresy. That'll be the most interesting part to me. I do like it so far though; a fairly standard seeming Apulia-Sicily AAR with an interesting new character. I would just like to see the heresy pop up.

I could just skip ahead to the heresy part, making mini-updates on a per decade basis. I could use a reason to play more CK2. (Un)fortunately, my dynasty will stay true to Catholicism because while it would be so much more fun to stamp it out completely, I need a shining light at the end of the tunnel in order to kick all the heretic's ass. Oh, also, I forgot to add in the last update, somewhere in 1097 I changed the laws to Absolute Cognatic. CK2+ really helps with that.

Playing through the entirety of the Expansion part 20 years at a time arbitrarily isn't great fun, I'll speed update Expansion and move onto Heresy. Also, if I have about 30 years after the arbitrary end of the Riconquista, I'll do a mini-part where I make super vassals and piss them off. In short, super-mega civil war. Next update hopefully in a few hours.

Unfortunately it's really late and uploading pictures takes a long time so proper update will be tomorrow but short story is I expanded and took about 1/4 of Iberia, wiped out the Kabylians, had my prime heir die and used sneakiness to get rid of secondary heir so awesome daughter gets the throne, as well as barely surviving against the Shia Caliphate. They're really toned down in CK2+. They were only able to put a single 10k unit stack against me. After that, a few minor rebellions, more Iberian expansion, death of Tancred and succession as the daughter, and more Iberian expansion. As well as having a ridiculously long lasting debt, about 10 years because I kept spending. Oh, and the beginnings of heresy are appearing. Hopefully the one I haven't stamped out isn't so there's a starting point already when the Heresy phase begins. I'm real close, about 2 decades now. Just the rest of Muslim Iberia and whatever Christian Kingdoms I can claim and then I'll be ready.

Expansion Speed Update Part 1.
I'm going to head this off by displaying a religious map of Europe. The good news is that heresy already exists. The bad news is most heresy is right in my expansion path, so it'll have to be stomped out. That will make expanding heresy just a little bit harder.
M2nq5.jpg

The other thing is, as long as I'm Norman, I can't build culture specific buildings because of this:
B7gPi.jpg

So, I declare a double holy war on Valencia and Kabylia, and I take Kabylia rather easily as they are never able to muster an army.
aD1CG.jpg

Valencia has complications as midway through the war this happens:
1rQrl.jpg

Over the next 6 years I kite their doomstack until I get enough cash and piety in order to hire all the mercenaries/holy orders I need and destroy the Shia's army in a single battle. Their might is crushed and from that day for the next few years they are not able to muster any offensive. I win and end up with 1200 gold. Also, a few months after crushing their doomstack:
EiTPJ.jpg

Yep, sure you're winning.

Unfortunately, because of shitty loan take mechanics, I take a 600 gold loan and not a 200 gold loan, so I'm in debt for the rest of Tancred's life and the early stages of his daughter's life.
However, I win both the defensive war against the Shia and the offensive war on Valencia when I notice this little jem:
sd6bk.jpg

I declare holy war for Barcelona as well as attack the Grand City of Venezia, on which I had previously fabricated a claim.
pbdIt.jpg

I crush the barely existent Venezian army and then proceed to slaughter the Ar(a)gonians and take the bulk of their power base, Barcelona, for myself. After that I take more Muslim Iberian territory, along the way I kill my son-heir and make his two daughters bishops, Tancred dies, Aliscia succeeds:
WOWM3.jpg

Apparently she's named after her master diplomat aunt.
Right now, I'm about 25 years away from starting the Heresy part and am currently embroiled in a Holy war for a few Islands that I don't want to rouse the whole realm for but I may have to rouse the whole realm for.
Unfortunately, being Queen of Aragon doesn't amount to much when all your de jure territories are Muslim territories you have to holy war for and not de jure war for. I'm going to have to pop Kingdom of Jerusalem early.
I also believe that my husband at the moment has about 22 martial, so not bad. Tancred had 23 as a top at one point and could have had 25 if he hadn't been such a craven.

Expansion Speed Update Part 2:
No screens, sorry.
Basically what occurred was I took a lot of Mauretanian territory, they had a revolt that split their territory in half, my heir is betrothed to the Queen of Castille-Leon, I have a Navarrese king who adores me, an alliance with France, and a Crusade for Egypt that resulted in an independent Kingdom of Egypt next door as a result of the Caliph's capture.

Narrative Transition to Heresy part 1: The beginning
Aliscia sat in her study, the tri-crown of Jerusalem, Aragon, and Sicily resting near her. She was reading a book written by Rand al'Thor. A curiosity, that. He barely had any time in his busy life and yet he had written a book half as long as the Bible. Most of it was babble about the supposed lineage of the al'Thor line, about people she had never heard about and lands that probably never existed. The only interesting part in the whole book was the final part. Instead of rambling about his lineage, Rand al'Thor had laid out complex plans for catapulting their family to power in Europe over a period of generations. It was nonsense such as destroying and reforming the Catholic church. Aliscia wondered whether he was mad or not. He probably was, considering he thought he could accomplish this plan over his lifetime. The only thing that kept her reading was the detail with which the plans were laid. They painstakingly described the process and time of dismantling and "re-mantling" the Catholic Church to be seen as saviors. She was already 56 at the time, with little time left in her life. After a few moments of pondering, she decided. She would follow the instructions of her mad grandfather.
---
"My Queen, surely you must understand this is madness!"
"It would never work! The Pope would never approve!"
Aliscia listened to her council bicker among themselves. It was aggravating. "Enough!", she yelled. "We will institute Free Investiture and we will set up an Anti-Pope. I already have the man scoped and the Bishopric ready. As soon as the realm agrees to the law change, there will be an Anti-pope. We will fight against the Pope."
Grudgingly, her council ceded to her will, knowing full well what would happen if they continued to argue. In a matter of days, Free Investiture was passed and the Anti-Pope set up. The Time of Heresy had begun!
8TII5.jpg

About frickin time. I'm 4 years off schedule.
____________________

Heresy, unfortunately, is going to be a lot of waiting with little expansion as I'm afraid of Crusades. Any wars will be outlined in detail in order to make posts interesting and the inevitable Crusade(s) against me will each have their own mini series. It's also going to take much longer as raising an Anti-pope only does 5% moral erosion, not the 20% I had planned on. Having an alliance and soon-to-be-heir with the last major Christian player on Iberia as well as an alliance with France is really going to help me when the Crusade's roll around.

Just finished playing the first heresy part, no heresy yet though. Upload will be sometime tomorrow. I also lied about little expansion. Lots of holy wars. In hindsight, not so great, but land expansion for the Crusades is crucial. France is one of the contenders for top 4 armies. I'm also in the top 4. Since I'm allied with France...

Heresy Part 2: Securing the Succession.
Aliscia sat with her Marshal in an antechamber of the Papal Quarters. They had been quickly converted to a style befitting an Anti-Pope. Royal fool, that one. He honestly believed that the Crown and God had chosen him to be the Pope. He could not see the machinations below the surface. But that was not what worried Aliscia. What worried Aliscia is the state of preparation of her realm. At present, they were able to raise a large army, but smaller than the nearby major powers. There was the problem of plans to be drawn up for the crusades and her heirs first children to be disposed of for Castille and Sicily to merge correctly.
vRZ1J.jpg

Army size prior to expansion
And so she let her thoughts drift, to the Muslim territories at the edge of her Iberian holdings. The Muslims would certainly have Mosques set up, Mosques which could be converted into Bishoprics, which could get rid of..."undesirable heirs." Aliscia smiled. These wars would be crucial to the realms survival.
_____
The first declaration of war was sent to the Sultan of Al-Garb. 6000 Sicilians boarded ship and headed off for the Iberian territories. There they met heavy initial Muslim resistance, but the Muslims armies were crushed in multiple consecutive battles.
j0VRP.jpg

Confident of her forces victory, Aliscia delegated the war to her marshals and Dukes and retired to her chambers when she was struck upon by a wild fancy. Specifically, her bastard son.

Really woman? Really?

That was an unfortunate diversion which, fortunately for Aliscia and her reputation, did not result in a child. That would've been very embarrassing. Deciding to get her mind off what she had done with her son she decided to check the income of the realm and almost choked when she saw the numbers. The treasury of the crown was filled to the brim every year.

Unfortunately, while she was busy at court, her vassals had botched the invasion plans (that's who I'm blaming at least...) and a large force of 5000 Muslims were bearing down on 2000 Christians. Furious, Aliscia commanded the levies be raised again and the holy orders and mercenaries hired. These alleviated the problems and ultimately resulted in her victory over a large army of Muslims.

After that battle, the Muslims were broken. The Sultan of Al-Garb surrendered the Duchy of Toledo, which was promptly formed and handed off to another al'Thor, but not before two bishoprics were split once more amongst her grand daughters, preventing a succession crisis a few generations down the line.
After their repeated victories against the Iberian Muslims, the realm had grown strong, and was now able to field 14000 men in the field, almost as many as the HRE.

This emboldened Aliscia and, determined to expand her realm again against weakened Muslims, declared another holy war, this time against the former Sultan of Mauretania, now Sultan of I-can't-give-a-d***.

It helped that they were embroiled in a civil war at the time which took up half their levies. The war ended quickly and another duchy was added to the growing Sicilian Kingdom.

Noting that the Cumans had been gaining a lot of strength, Alisica sent her spymaster to find out the situation of the East. It was not pretty.

WpVbO.jpg

Cumans held almost all of the East and were brushing up against Hungary. It would not be long before the Cumans troubled Catholic Europe.

Unfortunately, as a result of her daughter-in-law's stupidity and bullheadedness, she could not raise her grandson herself and instead set about killing all his teachers that she deemed unworthy until she came upon one that suited her. This was the man who ended up with the role.

Fz08z.jpg

A great marshal, excellent diplomat and steward, and passable man of intrigue. He was not a man of learning but Aliscia left such things to her landless daughters and men of the cloth anyway.

In due time, feeling powerful and mighty, Aliscia decided to try her luck against the weakened Shia Caliphate. Bargaining that their weak state and in-existent neighbors of the same faith that victory would be easy. How wrong she was. A few months into the war a mighty Shia host smashed the Sicilian forces, forcing them to fall back and retreat against an army that soon grew to a size of 12000, almost as much as Sicily had been able to raise prior to their crushing defeat.

Fortunately, around 10000 levies were raised again and this time the Holy Orders and Mercenaries were called, forming a total army of over 17000 men who came upon the horde of Muslims and slaughtered them in a great battle. It was the end of the Shia Caliphate's resistance.

At the end, after another half a year of sieges, the Caliph finally surrendered Damascus to Aliscia, who promptly usurped the Ducal Title and granted it to her daughter who still lived at her court, matrilineally married to a skilled man.

At the end, 9 years later, the moral authority of the Church had only been eroded about 3%. The Holy wars had served to keep the religion afloat, but they were necessary to securing the succession and the realm for future generations.

Well, that's it. I wanted it to be longer but I had to make up for lost time in the Expansion part. Next update will be mainly a familial and realm update, as well as future expansion plans that hopefully will not turn into holy wars as I do not want to prolong heresy longer than a decade. I'm also tirelessly attempting to fabricate claims on Egypt. They can raise a lot of men and I want those for my realm.

So, familial update.
I have a screen of Aliscia from way back with few stat changes, so I won't bother updating her. I will be going over my son and heir, the stupidity of the AI's choices in my future heir and why he will need to be replaced, as well as my close land-holding family.
First off, my male heir at around 40 or so years of age:
2fnQz.jpg

An amazing diplomat and passing steward. Unfortunately everything else is lackluster but because he's a transition monarch it's fine. I'll have him die in some war quickly to move onto the next heir. He is on his third marriage I believe. I publicly murdered his first/second wife in order to secure the marriage with the queen of Castille.
Next up, his malformed son because the Queen of Castille is super dumb in selecting guardians:
5LnDO.jpg

As you can see, a trio of horrible choices. Shy is arguable, but sloth combined with greed and shy is just terrible. He will have to die in order to ensure a strong line continues. Unfortunately he has a male brother who also must die.
Here is my chosen heir if the AI can actually raise her properly and not do a half-assed job at it.
WiCvc.jpg

Much better stats and traits befitting a ruler. Unfortunate that I'll need to have 2 female rulers in a row unless the AI really makes the second son good or I die real soon so I can raise him myself. Unfortunately, if it comes to the male character, I may have to end up killing the daughter above in order to avoid a changed succession law penalty.
Now, my son and daughter who have ended up getting lands. First up, the son:
oS86R.jpg

Master warrior and passable diplomat, with OK stats for the rest. A very good military leader and generally loyal vassal.
The daughter, now:
os8zT.jpg

Excellent at learning and intrigue and passable at stewardship. Martial is a much less useful skill for females as they use it a lot less but the low diplomacy might be annoying. I'm also not certain about the benefits of high learning.
Moving on, there is my brother duke who is about 6-7 years my junior.
DYPmP.jpg

He's old, but he's a jack of all trades with shit learning.
Then, there's a grandson of Rand's second son and 4th Duke of the title:
PPRk8.jpg

Excellent martial and stewardship but bad learning and diplomacy and 0 intrigue. Ouch.
Well that wraps up the immediate family. I accidentally screwed up the line of Alison, who I was planning on turning into diplomats but the eugenics failed and I messed up with land grants so I have a 60 year old prince bishop as my most powerful vassal and his son as the friggin antipope. I'm still hitting myself over that. Only upside is I control who becomes most powerful vassal so...yay? There are currently 35 living members of the House of al'Thor. Next Heresy part will be up tomorrow with a bit of kin-slaying. Hopefully anonymous kin-slaying. I also really need to have my queen die, she's starting to drag on which is getting annoying. I'm certain that Bonaventura also agrees.

Sorry bout lack of updates. I've been rather bored with CK2, as well as learning what would happen in about 50 years. I was playing through another game where the Pope failed his crusade and Moral Authority dropped and heresy spread everywhere. I am very concerned about whether or not I could actually hold Sicily together against a swathe of heretic dukes/doges.

Heresy Part 3: The First Actual non-curbstomp War.
Aliscia died shortly after starting this session, however her last action was this, killing her retarded grandson. Unfortunately that didn't fix the problem, but here:
rYbKE.jpg

And then she died 2 months later.
N9tCk.jpg

Her son, Bonaventura (hate that name), succeeded her.
I was really expecting him to just kill his second son in order to get his heir in his court.
252Qt.jpg

As well as become a transitional ruler for the next person in order to succeed, so I wasn't expecting an exciting reign. I also wasn't expecting the Holy Roman Empire to have a claim on ALL MY TERRITORIES. You can see where this is going.
v1ovf.jpg

What resulted is an epic tale of frustration and betrayal that spanned about a decade. Which is going to be the focus of this part. Hopefully I don't botch this.

Bonaventura (You know what? I hate that name. He'll just be called Bro now) was in a rage. Having just received this DOW from the HRE and a second message stating that the Kingdom of France will ride against, not for, the Kingdom of Sicily had driven him into that rage. One courtiers arm had already been broken and the area had been evacuated. Even worse news was that his wife was unlikely to join the war on his side. Finally calming down, a cold fury replaced his rage. "Muster the levies. We will teach this 'Kaiser' and this 'King' who is the true power in Europe."
A month later, levies raised and mercenaries bought, 16000 Sicilians, Muslims, Spaniards, and other foreigners mustered together and took the fight to the mega stack of the Kaiser and the King.
Vyp4D.jpg

The battle was won, narrowly. But it was only the first of many battles. The French king, like a coward, sent a few small probing attacks into Northern Spain in order to grab the Mountain Passes like a pansy. Instead of coming to face Bro's armies on the field, they ran and laid siege and lowered war score. It was annoying as hell and massively disproportionate responses resulted just to show the French how weak they actually were. Unfortunately, the war was not in the Sicilians favor. Fighting a two front war, the combined might of which exceeds that of Sicily by about 7000. It was very tough, and throughout the war dozens of noblemen were captured and subsequently ransomed in order to finance the hordes of mercenaries that were hired. At least 2 more doomstacks were made by the Coalition of Fools (epic name), and they were also crushed. Unfortunately, Sicily's army grew weaker and weaker, with a greater reliance on mercenaries. Fortunately, Sicily was the richest Kingdom in the world, able to finance tens of thousands of mercenaries at any one time. With the massive influx of cash from prisoners coming in, Sicily was never at a shortage for cash. The estimate of cash gained and spent during that time is probably around 1500 gold earned from ransoms alone and about 2000-2500 gold spent on mercenaries. It was ridiculous, but it never crippled Sicily or forced her into debt. The Coalition of Fools had a finite amount of cash and men, whereas Sicily could afford to hire and keep the mercenaries, as well as muster the 1st or 2nd largest army in the world. Unfortunately, idiots inside the realm decided that a war that threatened the existence of the realm was a GREAT time to plot. They were either bribed and convinced or outright imprisoned. They never developed to the point where they were an issue. The war dragged on for a ridiculous 11 years, because of the cowardice of the French to actually fight up front. As mentioned, their armies were always crushed with a ridiculous overreaction. I was hoping to provide you with a map of the world and battles, but imgur's being annoying and not allowing me. In the end, the final nail in the Coalition's coffin was a fresh wave of reinforcements from Sicilian territories which annihilated the remaining enemy forces and finally won the war for the Sicilians. I just imagine Bro yelling this off the top of his castle just from pure elation: " YOU SEE THAT SHITLORDS?! SICILY CAN BEAT ALL YOUR ASSES! NO HELP NEEDED DICKS! WOOH!"
aLtGS.jpg

Oh and yes, this does mean I am the richest motherf***er on the whole map.
ip84j.jpg

1200 gold, right there. And then I splurged it all on buildings and bribes. YAY!
Anyway, here concludes the Pointless War of Fail. This really emboldens me and makes me think that even if the Pope calls a crusade against us, we can beat his ass twice over (maybe not twice). The other thing of note is that because it requires 2000 prestige to raise an Antipope to the Papal Staff, so.... no replacements I guess? If you have a super easy solution to getting tons of prestige without creating titles, please tell me. It will REALLY speed up the process.
EDIT: I've also figured out how the HREmperor probably ended up with my titles. About 3 generations up his great-grandfather or someone like that was given Rand's second daughter in marriage to secure an alliance and it seems that he somehow ended up getting claims on the whole Kingdom as a result of that. That's the only reason I can think of at least. He also had 1500 gold prior to losing even though his base income was half mine and his war income was literally about +1-2 gold whereas mine was on average +8-10.

Next Update will be up soon. Lots more wars, again with few screens. I'm nearing the midpoint of The Heresy. Also, a side note: when I move into the Riconquista, I'll make a custom empire and make the newly raised antipope-turned-pope my vassal to represent religious domination.
