Well, the normal thing would be to script the AI to do the historical path. From democratic to the revolution of Negrín. At the end it was indisputably communist. More communist that the soviets, maybe. "Homenage to Catalonia" George Orwell is recommended to read, as he fought in the civil war and explains there what he saw. In hoi3 was easily done by events. Dunno how it will change in hoi4.

Was the aim not to be less predetermined?

The most likely reason for the label is that it affects what happens, and as Johan has said, gameplay is the most important thing.

If we have reasons to believe they were leaning towards Comintern, then calling them Communists in the game is ok, the game needs to be able to decide a major faction that these national parties with want to align themseves with. Don't worry OP, we all know they're freedom-loving "Democrats". They did willingly accept support from the USSR and communists were active withing their ranks. It doesn't necessarily imply that they were actual Communists, all of them, but for in-game simplicity, it makes sense to go with this choice.

PS/Later Edit: the reasons why some details are fusy and unclear is because it was a civil war and things go muddy in these periods, it's hard to draw a clear distinction. There's no reason why we should have to neat pick all that dirt and for a mere video game, this is why I think the actual details matter less than how they should be abstracted for a more realistic feel in the actual video game.

Well, i've to point out that not all Communist were anti-democratic people as they are painted at the time. During Spanish Civil War, the Comitern man on Republican side was Palmiro Togliatti, and he firmly believed that the Revolution would be achieved after the war with the support of the people making election and allied with socialists like he try to do inside Italy after the war. Many volunteers believed that they would be able to vote also during Communist Proletarian dictatorship because the definition of this one was hard to define so many fighters for the communist side were just trying to achieve a "communist democracy" or a more equal democracy.

Perhaps a compromise could be to have Spain become communist but retain elections? I don't know if this is still in the game, but if it still holds true than some fascist states will retain elections:

As a pure game matter, knowing that war with Germany is coming and giving aid to the Republicans makes sense for the UK and France because the Germans were supporting the Nationalists and the enemy of your future enemy can be your future friend.

In the '30s, though, many in Britain and France saw a strengthening anti-Soviet Germany as a bulwark for the west against the Soviets, while rivalry in the east also deterred German designs against France.

That war breeds revolutions was demonstrated by WW1, and evading both was a prudent goal for the British and French governments. The growing chaos in Spain only emphasized this. Preserving the delicate stability offered by the petrified political arrangements of the French republic left no taste for internal conflict over intervention abroad, even with the direct threat of the Rhineland being re-occupied.

Both sides in Spain were political poison and it is hard to imagine a government of either Britain or France finding itself motivated to pay the political price of overtly supporting either faction without a major shift in domestic politics first (such could be driven by the outbreak of WW2).

I don't belive the game has to follow the historical path once it has been started. it just has to be somewhat plausible. But it shouldn't change things based on what will happen like making spain proper more "communist" (stalinist) because it increasingly was later on. Either sowjet support raises the communist faction in spain or it doesn't but the fact is the spanish civil war won't be the only possible civil war in HoI 4. And if the sowjets only intervene if one side in the war is explicitly communist that wouldn't be an isolated problem. It would concern every other civil war as well. Scripting spain into an other civil war after between communists and democrats doesn't solve the general problem and neither does making spain communists from the start. The sowjet AI has to decide on it's own where it has a chance to get the communist faction into power and than throw resources at them. For all we know that could have been happening from day one during WWW (Japan 1).

I am 100% certain that there were no Nationalists fighting alongside the Republicans.
Catalonian and Basque nationalists were repressed by the military dictatorship that the republican movement had overthrown. So, yes, there were regional nationalists from but, obviously none from the Spanish Nationalist faction that Republican Spain was at war with.
