La Serenissima Repubblica di Venezia
A few in fear
Flying away from him, whose boast it was
That the grass grew not where his horse had trod,
Gave birth to Venice. Like the water-fowl,
They built their nests above the ocean waves;
And where the sands were shifting, as the wind
Blew from the north or south - where they that came
Had to make sure the ground they stood upon,
Rose, like an exhalation from the deep,
A vast metropolis, with glistening spires,
With theatres, basilicas adorned;
A scene of light and glory, a dominion,
That has endured longest among men.
Flying away from him, whose boast it was
That the grass grew not where his horse had trod,
Gave birth to Venice. Like the water-fowl,
They built their nests above the ocean waves;
And where the sands were shifting, as the wind
Blew from the north or south - where they that came
Had to make sure the ground they stood upon,
Rose, like an exhalation from the deep,
A vast metropolis, with glistening spires,
With theatres, basilicas adorned;
A scene of light and glory, a dominion,
That has endured longest among men.

Head of State - Doge Francesco Loredan
Patriarch of the noble and wealthy family of Loredan, which has long been listed amongst the greatest of Venice Francesco Loredan was a near unanimous decision to replace the late Cristoforo Moro. After the ignominious end of Francesco Foscari and the shame of his family the guilt of the people of Venice was great, and it was Francesco Loredan that first suggested returning the Foscari's to their former eminence and to their grand palazzi Ca' Foscari. It was a generous and unexpected move as the Loredan's and Foscari were long rivals. This act of reconciliation did much to elevate Loredan's reputation in the city and his accession to the Ducal throne was accompanied by grander than ever celebrations and processions, where his own wealth was shown as his family rained coins from the Doge's Palace unto the spectators in St. Mark's Square. The people now mostly recovered from the tragedies of Venice's rape by her enemies look forward once again and behind Doge Francesco Loredan see a bright future.
