the removal of trees in map editor

is this possible and if so how do you do it ... i have downloaded a map and i want to get rid of most of the trees as it slows the game down so much any ideas?

I also don't know how to do it and its very annoying, because it you create a river and there are trees in the way, the trees just sink below the river, and it looks weird.
