While the Swedish education system would have you believe that Gustav is the rule here he's rather a big exception. The same goes for Henry.
On the continent the reformation wasn't imposed from above in such a way at all. You only need to go to Denmark to find a quite different situation in regards to the reformation than that in Sweden.
Obviously you still had a choice as a ruler but there was in fact a quite real protestant movement, to many a catholic ruler's dismay.


As for the point about latin countries being more tied to the pope I think that's a good one :) The Catholic church modeled it's inner workings after that of the Roman Empire so there's a heritage there that doesn't exist in nations that where never roman.
