The Mamelukes dug a canal from the Nile to the Red Sea in 1311. Could this be effected in the game by making Egypt a port? Would ships be able to enter and leave either waterway?

All canals of that type (Necho's, Ptolemaian, etc.) were useless in the age of sail because there were no useful winds in the north of the red sea.
What about galleys? The Red Sea and Indian Ocean were well plied with galleys. 100,000 men were used to dig that canal, it had to have some effect.
yeah (as I just learned from you chegitz) the Mamelukes dug a canal connecting the Nile and Red Sea, this is what allowed them to (in part) control trade in the Indian Ocean
Its impossible within the EU system, because we cannot add or subtract sea zone connections.
