okay after playing some time now Stellaris and every 4x game you could imagine, since 1980 ! (My first Apple ][+)
I always asked me after some time, WHO CARES what is on the other side of the universe, as when you have conquered/explored around 20% of it, you have plenty of EVERYTHING what it could offer.

MAYBE THE ANSWER ? Need of different Approach to strategic resources and NEW LUXURY resources

1.MEANIGFUL HIDDEN Strategic resources,
so my first change in Stellaris would be, the resources on the map could only be seen, when the one who surveyed the system has researched that data ...
other Empires, who haven't researched that resource don't see them (as it is now)

CHANGE IN FINDING THEM, first you HAVE TO SURVEY THE SYSTEM YOURSELF, you will get a research possibility "UNKNOWN RESOURCE" ... after researching it, you know which one it is ...
AND AFTER that it is possible to get research fields, what to do with it !

HOW to know resources you aren't able to survey yourself, just trade them (but they are ?) from someone who already has researched it ... and as long as you have that trade agreement, you could research it.

NEW Diplomacy action, show positions of

STRATEGIC resources
and
LUXURY resources
__________________________________________________________
2. LUXURY RESOURCES, they are on the planet and you need a planet mine there, but they could be built also on uncoloniced planets with robots as workers ... build a Robot mining ship !

Damn more resources, are you nut, Stellaris is already somehow a micromanage Horror ...
BUT MEANINGFUL, you have not to do it, but you could ...

"LUXURY RESOURCES" are NEEDED !!! for planets and inhabitants ...
so how it is now it has to change ...

1.) Your EMPIRE has no LUXURY resources, so any planet you own, could only be FILLED WITH POPS up to 50%
any hex filled with a POP over that, will receive -10% per hex overpopulation up to -50%
you could reduce that with ANY LUXURY RESOURCE , you only have to assign it to that planet.
That could be changed anytime you want ...
so for one planet to populate it to 100% you need at least any combination of 5 DIFFERENT Luxuryresources ...
which one, only check it on and off for that planet you desire ...

SO NOW you have a reason, to trade, explore and go to the other side of the universe as your empire grows !
And Planets aren't FULL with POPs after 100 years ...of course that has to be finetuned, and how many LUXURY has to be placed on the map ...

_________________________________
!!! OVERPOPULATION PROBLEMATIC
(Our earth has around 65% water, so we are using only 35% (reduce that even more because of deserts, ice, mountains) AND AT MANY PLACES WE ALREADY have terrible problems with too many humans per area)

Ahh forgot ONLY over 15 hexes luxury resources are needed ...
not to render that small planets even more worthless.
___________________________________________________
OVERCROWDED HEXES (it depends how many Pops are on your planet already, so that malus isn't bound to a special hex)

POP
15-16 minus 10% habitabillity ONLY ON THAT HEXES
17-18 minus 20% habitabillity ONLY ON THAT HEXES
19-20 minus 30% habitabillity ONLY ON THAT HEXES
21-22 minus 40% habitabillity ONLY ON THAT HEXES
23-25 minus 50% habitabillity ONLY ON THAT HEXES

Any Luxury/special good improves that hex malus for +10% ...
so some races ignoring that overpopulation a bit more, others are more sensible to that

So you want to use that wonderful 25 Gaia planet to ist full potential, you have been lucky enough to find it, NOW WORK FOR IT :)
and be proud that you have managed it, that it is now full of life !

________________________________
SO WHAT DO YOU THINK GUYS ?
could this make fun, to grow your empire and you could that System even ignore, and just own a lot more planets, which are only filled, with 50% POPs, which even feels more immersive ..
but your/some special planets ARE FULL of live, but they Need that LUXURY resources !!!
That make them special ...
at the moment all planets are full in my game, so nothing feels special or meaningful and no reason to talk with any other empire or go to the other side of the universe ... for me that would improve the fun in the game, if it is good implemented !
Wish you all fun

After 100 hours playing the game AND NEVER FINISHED ONE,
because of boring to death and the question "WHAT to do and WHY" ...
(1x MP, 1x Irongame, 2x modded games)

Now playing a heavy modded MP game with my brother, which is atm fun !

I really have to say, what that modder want to achieve is how it should be
but they couldn't do everything and for sure

a major overhowl of that strategic resources is needed and the introduction of luxury goods and MORE !
(Victoria 2 was a good start !)

SO FIRST LARGE ADDON for Stellaris
should be an ECONOMY DLC

THANKS

I get it that you want luxury goods to be worth it but this is not the way to it... This way you make them ESSENTIAL and not LUXURY. The way I see it, the only thing you need to get a population growing is food and good medical conditions, so assigning pop growing to LUXURY goods is a bad idea.

Instead you could say that you need colonization resources for certain planets (but definatley not all of them!) to get pops growing on them.
Then you could have luxury resources that are extremly rare and boost happiness on planets if you assign said goods to them.

Firstly a luxury resource that is necessary to overcome a malice isn't a luxury. Resources in EUIV would be a better example of a luxury resource since there's no malice to not having them, but you do get a bonus from collecting them.

Secondly I think extragalactic travel may be pretty interesting further down the line, but universal travel introduces allot of elements that the game was never intended to simulate.

To be honest, there'll never be too many strategic resources that the devs can add. Best 4x "innovative" mechanic hands down. Yours is a good idea overall, if not necessarily the best integration.

How the game could handle it ...

______________

So now you have the task to keep that goods rolling ... and secure them.
Integrate them into your empire or keep good diplomatic relations with your neighbors, so that this goods could reach your special planets !

Support empires, with military to secure that tranport routes, or crush them, if they are pirates which are always stealing your goods ... and so on, many possibilities !
Pirates will form along that trade routes ... in your empiire, no problem , crush them and the next 100 or longer no one will dare to attack your goods ... but how to crush them far away from your border ?

At the Moment I even don't care if my next Battleship has that +20% hull (I have 200 or so) , and so on ... so that strategic resources are somehow worthless.

BUT IF YOUR POPs on your best planets start to form protests against your Leadership, that for sure would give you something to work on !

Aahh and Forget your STACK OF DOOM, you will need ships to protect that trade routes !
