IC: Watkins ate his meal in silence, still slightly shaken by last day's events. He did not mind the dead bodies or the dying men, nor was he a stranger to his own mortality. What troubled him was the fact that the odds of him surviving this conflict were catastrophically low. In short, he had miscalculated. So he spent the night pondering whether to try his luck here or try his luck in deserting. He was a man of the world, well versed in the art of survival, but he was also an Englishman, someone who valued pride and honor. In the end, he decided to try his luck in the trenches...

Smith was in a serious condition when he reached the field hospital, which progressively became worse as time went by. Smith lied in bed and picked up the glass of water beside his bed. Then he had remembered a section of a poem written by Rudyard Kipling, one of his favorites:

"I sha'n't forgit the night
When I dropped be'ind the fight
With a bullet where my belt-plate should 'a' been.
I was chokin' mad with thirst,
An' the man that spied me first
