(( Oh for the love of - we've been through this sort of thing. The player/character demographics at this time show that there should be a left wing party, a centrist party, and a conservative party; not a centrist party as the left, an all too specific right market liberal party modeled on the doctrines of Riccardo's character, and a conservative party.

The Democrats coalitioned to make the Harrison thing happen. They had a strong showing even without Federalist coalition support in the election not so long ago that got Joe Hayden elected. There are no grounds to disband the socialist Democratic Party upon.

The Federalists are perfect for what you are talking about King, and the ACP are perfect for Riccardo's characters too. We can't have parties designed around the specific permutations of single players; if parties had completely indivisible visions, there would be no need for primaries.

I was under the understanding that any change to do more to revive the three party system despite the low number of players would not be a modification of the Federalists or Democrats on such specific lines nor a resurrection of the Republican Party, but the creation of a liberal party to replace the Federalists: so the social democrats of the Democrats and the market liberals of the ACP can be in one party together and fight it out in the primaries. ))

Quite.

Really it's only a combination of amazing luck, charisma, lots of promises and being my character that have achieved Harrison a victory anywhere near this tripartisan. I'd be truly amazed if next election has any of the candidates pass the 10-vote mark.

PS. The update might get delayed until Wednesday, or even next weekend, as the majority of school assignments and testing have somehow converged on the week before test week.

(( Oh, so what you said about a Liberal Party before is off? I'm not necessarily upset, I just was going off of what you had last said on the subject. I can definitely see seeking a two party formula due to low voter turnout, but then - as per what King had said, that would probably be a socialist and a conservative party; the kind of center-left or centrist party he was speaking about earlier would not really fit in a two party system with the current body of player characters. ))

(and another place, and another thread ;-))

The presidency of Harrison will be a perfect example of how people of many political philosophies can get behind on person for the betterment of all the people. Likewise, the collapse of this coalition is not a bad thing, but a way to move forward after the... cleaning house... of Harrisons presidency.

Well, I think I last spoke of it just before Election 1889. Back then we weren't completely sure if the new system would pan out, and right now it's looking to have gone so horribly right that replacing the Federals no longer looks like a smart move thread stability-wise. Maybe if they crash and burn after next election.

PS. I'll be giving an inaugural and cabinet announcements once I find my notes.

(( That's a bit disingenuous don't you think? The Federalists went from on the track to extinction to seeming large in charge due to the coalition and the drop in players as they, I hope temporarily, faded off for a while during the Harrison interlude in the nation's history.

Everyone general seems to have felt, myself included, that you deserved your desired Harrison era; but using that as evidence for the idea of the Federalists being revived is highly inaccurate - unless you prevent any changes and thus people will be forced to make the Federalists a broad tent party again as any opposition to Socialism or Conservatism will find its way into the Federal tent; a self-fulfilling prophecy of their survivability by keeping them around. And from what you are saying, I fear you are under the thought that the Federalists should be replacing the Democrats; when the Democrats only dropped in support because few wanted to vote against you; most of the considerable number of Dems either voted for you or have not showed up on the thread for a while, like many players did once the interlude started, as they presumably decided to wait it out.

I know the Federalists are your baby, but considering how I didn't offer you a challenge when you wanted them to survive for the Harrison era; extending that indefinitely and positioning things so I'll be the jerk if I contest it at all is not a very cool move.

There has not been a lot of permanent defections to the Federalists or a ton of new Federalist players; there's just the fact that you asked the Democrats to stand aside for you and they did. Now acting like that is some divine mandate for the Federalists or that they truly are the largest party just because Harrison got the most turnout is simply not true. If you weren't one of the people standing for election, I would be surprised if the Federalists gained more votes than either the ACP or the Democrats. ))

I'm not proposing keeping the Federalists around any farther than 1913, and I sure as hell don't think they're replacing the Dems. If anything, they seem to be slowly drifting ACP-ward post-1897.

I was saying that, at least for 1905, it would seem odd for them to collapse after this kind of a victory. They're going to fall after Harrison leaves, but that fall won't happen in 4 years after riding on a victory like 1901. 1909, they might try to win one more time, but if they don't they'll be out before 1913.

Don't forget, they received 6 votes in their 1897 primary, between two candidates, and they hadn't really run a Federal candidate since Walker in 1893.

James Harrison's Second Inaugural Speech, January 20th 1901
Fellow Americans,

I thank you for electing me to serve you as President of this great republic for four more years. It has been an interesting few months this election, and I am confident that the unity of the American people at the polls will reflect upon this nation’s fortunes as a veritable golden age. My administration at least will strive to reflect it, by being the administration of not one party, or one group of Americans, but of all Americans.

I promised that this century would be an American Century, and the first step to that is to remind our South American neighbors of whose Manifest Destiny it is to bring democracy and liberty from sea to shining sea. The American Army, Navy and Air Force will ensure that the United States, with justice and liberty for all, will reign supreme from Canada in the North, to Patagonia in the South. Our ambassadors and delegates in the Commonwealth will ensure that the American voice will not be drowned out by warmongers in Europe, and will continue to act as a sentinel of Liberty and Peace.

Through continued application of anti-trust and State Volunteer Services, the American economy will grow as every man is given equal chance to succeed. An ancient Pharaoh of Egypt once said, “look on my works, ye mighty, and despair”. His empire fell, but the Empire of Liberty shall never fall as long as good men work to build it! The ancient regimes of Europe, the Emperor of China, and the kings of old up in the heavens shall look upon the works of the American people.

They shall see that the huddled masses, who so long have yearned to be free, will have built prosperity so great that all the wonders of the Ancient World cannot compare to it. And when they see it, they shall not despair, for it is not the American Dream to bring others down. They shall rejoice with us, that their descendants live in an age where a beacon of Liberty and Hope like ours not only exists, but is reachable by one and all!

Sam Hensdale? President Harrison, might I be inclined to inform you that Sam Hensdale, my father, passed away in 1892? I had assumed that it would be I, David Hensdale the Mayor of Richmond, Virginia - who would be given the Secretary of State Position, in order to assert the Might of the United States of America on the world stage.
