My condolences to the Jarvis family. Although we did not always see eye to eye in politics, it was a privilege to work with the distinguished man in California and national politics.

Erica Hayden was born on November 17, 1862 to Jose Ibarura (Joe Hayden) and his wife Elizabeth Wagenknecht in Boston. She grew up in a working-class family and witnessed her father organize his fellow workers and eventually come to prominence in politics, first as a Libertarian, then a Federalist, and finally a Democrat. As her fathers political fortunes rose, her life grew gradually more comfortable and she was able to receive an education at Vassar College. She eventually received a degree in law and became the first woman admitted to the New York State Bar in 1887 after passing the exam in 1885 and waging a two year legal battle against the New York State Bar for refusing her admission. Her success led to the amendment of the Civil Code so that no person could be refused admission based on race or gender. She practiced law from 1887 to 1894, mostly defending women and advocating for their rights. In 1886, she married Richard Vallejo after growing acquainted with him when her father served in the Bridgeworthy and Vallejo Administrations as Secretary of Industry. Erica campaigned heavily for her father in the North East every time he ran for President.
Erica ran for Congress in the midterms of 1894, winning election as the Representative of New York City as a Federalist. She is very close with her sister-in-law, Alicia Vallejo, and has followed her trend of supporting the Federals on the state-level and the Democrats at the national-level. During the Hayden Administration, she worked as a Special Prosecutor responsible for the anti-trust case brought against United Fruit. Eventually, the court would rule in her favor and she became a national figure associated with progressive policies and trust-busting. After Harrison's election, she was appointed Attorney-General in recognition of her legal skill. This appointment made Erica the second woman appointed to head a Federal Department after her cousin, Alicia Vallejo, who was appointed Secretary of Industry during the Hayden Administration. In the election of 1904, Erica ran for and won a seat in the Senate from New York. She campaigned heavily on anti-war policies and promising to be a "thorn in the side of that warmonger, Carr!"

I also will examine any anti-trust bills for constitutionality and willl urge my clients to press the courts for the striking down of the law if it is found to violate the Constitution of the United States.

My friends in the California justice system (my grandfather had many allies from decades in office) have also informed me that they will also challenge any anti-trust legislation from the United States. What you do in New York is your business, Governor Harrison, and the business of the businessmen! But neither you nor Washington, D.C. can dictate Californian policy. These United States are founded on federalism, with the states having sovereignty over anything not explicitly handed to the federal government.
